One thing I like about your channel, and KZread in general, is it’s a good way to learn things you didn’t know before. It’s quick and easy, digestible information that expands your knowledge and how you interact with the world around you. Before watching this video, I knew what bread was. Before watching this video, I knew what cake was. And at the start of the video, I was so excited to learn more about what makes bread bread and what makes cake cake. Yet here I sit, at the end of the video, now living in a world where the line between bread and cake has become so blurry that bread and cake have ceased to exist, and somehow exist simultaneously side by side. You have dropped me in the middle of Shcroedinger’s bakery, and I will never find my way out.

I think if you’ve tried bread made outside the us, you’ll realize that standard American bread is basically cake in every other country. It contains way too much sugar and butter.

As someone who works at a Subway, let me yell you, it could definitely be worse. Just get a six inch with a decent amount of meats, cheese and veggies, and you're good Some people want double meat and extra cheese on a foot long, with waaayyy too many onions and peppers, hardly any lettuce, and drown it in sauce

in my country, bread does not contain sugar, the one that contains small amounts of it is called "excellent bread" (toasts, croissants, hotdog buns), it's really hard to translate it right, and those that have even more sugar but are not cake are called "semi-confectionery" it is difficult to translate because we have a separate word for bread and all baked products (excluding cakes), when in English it is one and the same word

The US, after people were killed by adulterated foods (some of which included actual poisons) in the early 1900s, leading to the creation of the FDA. There are rules about practically every basic food, and how they are to be labeled, how, when and where ingredients must be listed, etc. I would suspect things like that were the case in pretty much every country.

@@marshmallowvampire8503 Mostly because subway advertises itself as healthy food, with "eat fresh" and other slogans. McDonalds knows its fast food, and doesn't try to hide it.

@@in4mal_baker270 FWIW, fresh and healthy are not the same thing. If I buy and cook 80/20 beef chuck from the butcher the same day he ground it, it's still not healthy even though it's fresh. Conversely, if I buy a bagged salad from the supermarket, it's not necessarily fresh but it is healthy. With that said, the freshness of Subway's ingredients is up for debate, as I've been to some locations where they try to load up the sandwiches with more ingredients at the end of the day so they don't go to waste, and I've been to other locations where they cling wrap the tubs of ingredients and refrigerate them for the next day. The funny thing is, the only thing that's made fresh everyday at all locations is, well, the bread.

That's what happens when you've got a room full of people making 6 figures to penny pinch. "Hey, do we need to have ALL the grain in "whole grain? Like, can we use saw dust or something? It'll save us millions!"

0:42 my university subway does NOT do that sadly…. The workers cut them randomly and people are out here getting 4 inch subs

MatPat of Food Theory, I agree, ‘bap’ is a funny sounding name for a bread.

As John Oliver said in his piece on Subway, if you have to do a debate about whether your bread is actually bread, you are already losing the battle.

For clarification: The United Kingdom is the Union of Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is Composed of England, Wales and Scotland excluding Northern Ireland.

More specifically, Great Britain is the big island, which happens to contain nations of England, Scotland and Wales, who are all in United Kingdom of Great Britain. Together with Ireland, Great Britain, Isle of Man and numerous smaller islands the make British Isles. And let us not discuss the monstrositythat is "Crown depencies", Territories or Commonwealth.

@@vinzcastro9304 Oh boy. Look up The Troubles, Irish War of Independence, and Irish Civil War on Wikipedia and you'll see why. It is really hard to explain and I'm too lazy to do it right now haha. Fascinating read though. Modern Irish history is prob one of the most interesting I've read.

@@vinzcastro9304 the Irish fought for full independence of the island of Ireland, but the Unionists in (what is now known as) Northern Ireland wanted to stay a part of the United Kingdom. As a compromise, we got full independence and 6 counties of Ireland went to the UK. I may be biased as an Irish lad myself, but it's a very twisting road and a great read if you're into history!!
