well you wouldnt 'just ask for a sandwich', you'd ask for a specific sandwich, like a ham sandwich, a pb&j, you get the deal. so that logic wouldnt make much sense either way

There is 3 categories which every food can go: -Sandwiches : A meal which you stack ingredients (you can have a sandwich of bread for example with 2 slices) -Soups : Mostly liquid foods (can have a bit of solid food in it) -Salads : One or a bunch of food you put together, in piece or not (a fruit is a salad of on ingredient) Technically a hotdog is a sandwich, you can try with other foods, each of them can be in those categories.

You talk to him and ask “How are you not cake?” He answers with “I drank something.” You ask if you can live in his house and he agrees to it. After going in his house you wake up. You think it was all a dream. But you find out it wasn’t a dream you fell asleep inside the man’s house. The man says to you “You’re finally awake.” He gives you a drink that looks like a mix of purple and yellow. You ask what drink it is and he tells you “it will make it so you can’t turn into cake.” But it did the exact opposite. He’s the one who turned everything into cake. NY also classifies sandwich because of food stamps, a food stamp user cannot buy prepared or hot case food. Oddly enough, stores in NY will put prepared fried and rotisserie chicken in the cooler case and then it's food stamp approved. Gotta love NY.

My take on this is that for it to be a sandwich it needs carb and then protein and then carb. An open faced sandwich is a "Sope"(spanish). This means that depending on if you cut all the way through the bun when putting the sausage inside, a hot dog *could* be called a sandwich.

I mean when the Earl of sandwich created it, it was basically to eat greasy foods without dirtying your fingers. So by that definition a hot dog qualifies but any sort of grilled sandwich does not, nor does open face sandwiches

a chicken wing is a sandwich because its chicken between two pieces of stuff that is made of bread (and other stuff, but you can also have bread with seeds and all that stuff so yeah)

That court case is outdated. Merriam webster now defines sandwich as " 1a: two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between b: one slice of bread covered with food." A hot dog bun is a split roll.

I did an entire essay back in highschool about a grilled cheese sandwich, spent days researching sandwichs, history and anatomy, technically a sandwich doesn't need two pieces of bread, it can be one, heck look at every subway sandwich, regardless, a hotdog is a sandwich, and by that means, most grains and dough also count, so also sandwiches are jelly donuts, taco, peta bread pockets, and yes, technically, an egg roll. Pop tarts, ravioli, which reminds me, Pop tarts are basically ravioli, ravioli is basically stuffed noodles, pop tarts are noodles. Fight me.

I believe a hot dog is not a sandwich for the following reasons: 1) a hot dog has only one slice of bread 2) one eats a hot dog with one hand. A sandwich is generally eaten with two 3) sandwiches are square shaped; meanwhile, hotdogs are far more cylindrical. We as a society must make sure to not confuse food types such as these.

Sandwich isnt a broad group really, it is an "overflow" grouping meant to catch things that other terms don't catch. Wraps, tacos, hotdogs, they have names that fit them better that won't confuse anyone when you ask for one. Terms only have meaning when they have utility and if someone who wants a quesadilla doesnt ask you to make them a sandwich, then calling one a sandwich has no utility. And "open face sandwich" isn't a thing.

As someone who had looked after and cared for dogs, I can safely say that they do not become sandwiches when hot

I like how he calls a Hotdog a Wiener.

To argue one of the points in deciding that a hotdog isn’t a sandwich. If your bad enough at opening up hot dog buns then your hot dog does in fact have 2 pieces of bread

Then by that judge's logic, subway doesn't sell sandwiches either. They sell hot dogs

Calling them hot dogs is a bit of a stretch. I'd call them baguettes. But hey they don't need to exclusively sell sandwiches. Just like how Burger King doesn't have to sell nothing but burgers.

@@v_ChimChim_x The issue, though, is that almost all, if not all, of Subway's products are open faced items folded over, which by the definition cited, makes them not sandwiches. Common sense dictates that they must be considered sandwiches from a legal standpoint in order for a Subway and Panera to be disallowed in the same shopping center, but the only way the ruling would say so _is_ by citing common sense, which is legally fluid, as the central definition would prevent a Subway product from sandwich classification.

They cut a baguette in two, butter it usually, and then put stuff in between, wadyu mean hot dog? With hot dogs the bun isn’t ever fully separated, if it was, then it would be a sandwich.

This is predicated on the idea that the bread is one piece as it's assembled, right? Well, but which of these things can you still comfortable eat if the bread halves come apart? The subway sandwich. In-hand handling has to be a factor as well. NO ONE likes a hotdog if the bread halves come apart.

When you realize that subway doesn’t serve sandwiches according to MatPat...

@@ReaperOKnowledge subs are sandwiches, they're bread rolls and count as sandwiches in the original British sense xx

Most of the reason for the confusion on definitions is because of restaurants and restrictions towards them. One restaurant could have a lease with the contract stating they can’t have any “sandwiches” so they designate tacos or hotdogs as sandwiches so they can have less competition in a area.

Dan Slater funny story. I was raised in northern Connecticut. Moved away after 6th grade and didn’t see Worcester’s name for a couple decades. When I was back there while working, I totally forgot how to pronounce it. When a local corrected me, I felt like an idiot having forgotten the pronunciation.. lol

I was the Quality Assurance Manager at a food plant that made both sandwiches and pizza. Per the USDA, their jurisdiction did NOT cover any of our products where the meat was covered by a bread product (sandwiches.) However, they were very interested in any of our products where the meat was readily visible, e.g. a pepperoni pizza (NOT a sandwich.) 😜

So going by that final definition, subway doesn't sell sandwiches either, they use a single long piece of bread that is never buttered

A pizza is actually toast.

When the definition says, "buttered" it could be defined as applying a spread (a verb), and any soft condiment, not necessarily the dairy product we refer to as butter. A peanut butter and jelly sandwich is a sandwich. A Pastrami on rye with mustard is, yes, a sandwich.

Just checked the Merriam-Webster dictionery and the defenition of a sandwitch is: a: two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between b: one slice of bread covered with food so I guess that a hotdog is a sandwich

1:58 actually, the buns are connected (or at least the buns I buy), so if the two sides are actually connected at the bottom than under those standards, no, a hotdog is not a sandwich by that definition.
