I can attest to the self propelled. I have mowed 3 times and not used self propelled once! I have a flat lawn and literally just lean into the mower and it goes on momentum. Easiest lightest mower I've ever used period. I take out the battery, put it in the trimmer and then in the blower and can get my whole lawn done with 2 bars left. Slick as hell!

One thing I read was, to get the self propelled even you don't use it because the self propelled models have a more powerful motor. Can't find motor specs on the push model.

Great, insightful commentary on this machine! I agree 100% with you on the benefits of a plastic deck. Steel decks inevitably rust, while today's polymers can last indefinitely.

Steel decks last 25 - 30 years in my experience. Other non-rusting materials have been tried and successfully resist rust but fail in other ways. For small, level applications such as in the video, a plastic deck may work well; time will tell.

I bought my Ego SP mower over 3 years ago and it performs like new. I have COPD and since it's so light I can push the mower about 50% of the time increasing battery life. I can cut my 1/4 lot on a full charge. My neighbor wants to buy mine so I worked a deal to sell it to him for $250. Gonna buy a new Ego mower with my 10% military discount. I also have the backpack blower and the Power Head edger/trimmer. Ego is the real deal. Oh and no nasty gas or fumes. My only maintenance in 3+ years is to sharpen the blade at the start of each season.

I just upgraded to this from also a husqvarna self propelled. I have not been able to use it yet but I absolutely hated how heavy the husqvarna was and the fact that it wouldn’t pull back due to the self propel feature. This being lighter and more able to be tossed around is going to make mowing my awful yard/hill so much better.

I also like that you can use the self-propulsion when the blades aren't turning, and you don't have to press both buttons to engage it. They do make a steel deck version, but I'd never want it myself. It would be great if you could keep the handle collapsed and start it and run it like that. It's fine for me, but for smaller people it would be nice. Charging the battery is pretty wicked fast for what it is.

Like you said wearing headphones it is very quiet. 2.5 ah batteries make it even lighter and last about 15 minutes. I love how it folds up so small and can stand on its side or bottom. No gas or oil, so nice. If anyone is in the market just be aware that ego batteries and chargers are really expensive if not purchased with a tool.

A word of warning when buying the EGO. I purchased mine in 2018 and am happy with the performance. Now for the issue, at the end of May 2020, the speed control malfunctioned. I had to bring it back to Home Depot to be sent off for repairs; this is the problem with buying from a big box store. Home Depot charged me a $20 fee up front, just in case the work to be done was not considered warranty work. The mower was dropped off at Home Depot on June 6, 2020 and it was not returned to me until August 4th. I was presented with a bill for $78. The repair to the speed control was under warranty, but without my approval, they decided to replace the blade and charged me $26 for the blade and $45 for the labor plus some miscellaneous charges. Also, at the local home depot, the diagnostic fee that was supposed to be returned to me was not and I was told that was the cost to ship the mower off. After much complaining, and refusing to pay for work that I did not authorize, Home Depot begrudgingly agreed to wave the $78 charge but would not refund my $20. Bottom line, I spent $20 for a blade I didn't need and I was without my mower for 2 months. I like the mower, but get ready to get screwed if anything breaks and needs to be repaired.

Ouch! to be honest I fell in love with EGO at first, but did some thinking and saw several negative reviews like yours. Thanks to Covid and Home Depot extending returns, I ended up returning the EGO shortly after this video and going back to gas before the return window closed. These electric Mowers can't be serviced by your average person and needs to serviced by a trained Tech or else you void your warranty. Where as gas, anyone with a wrench set can service it and not void warranty

Just bought one of these babies. Got tired of the gas not working.........and all the fiddling needed to get it going. I'm 6' 2"..... and this can be adjusted to my height easily. I was dying on the old Honda........it was not very adjustable. I was actually going to get a lawn service to cut my grass....I'm not getting any younger. These days, no one seems to call you back. So, I said screw it, and bought this for $599. It will pay for itself in 6 months! And, i'll get some exercise, too! My lot is 80' x 100'.........pool. shrubs, sidewalk and patio cut the size down by another 25%. Battery only used up 2 cells out of 5! I'll bet I get another cut out of the initial charge. Only complaint would be that the self propelled function takes getting used to. I almost slammed into my car as it took off - with me in tow........! When you are not cutting, you can still use the self propelled function, and the position of the switches are easily bumped. So, my fix is to just turn the speed dial all the way down to OFF. Then, when I need the power, I turn it back on.....and use it. I like that I can just push it on my own..........the self propel function does not have to be ON all the time. The mover is relatively light.....well balanced. I'm lovin' it for now.

I do not see an issue with using one of these units. I certainly would not use the excuse that now my wife would mow the grass, yea, right. I read many comments from people how their gas mower starts hard or doesn't pickup the grass very well and many other similar comments. Most of these individuals have no knowledge of what has happened to the 'residential' lawn mower over the years. The big issue....government regulations! First, forcing manufacturers to engineer 'low volume' engines to supposedly reduce emissions. The government has also regulated the blade speed of residential mowers as their attempt to reduce accidents with lawn mowers. You can clearly hear that the electric mower winds up the blade a shit load faster than the modern day residential mower. Just as with everything the government put their hands own, the fix does not 'fix' anything. Lower blade speeds is the absolute main reason the modern day 'gas' mower does not 'pickup' the clippings the way they use to. Why has this happened? Well, have you ever seen the morons out there giving rides on the riding mowers, or push/pulling a mower up and down the side of a ditch bank? All these irresponsible people do not except the fact that power equipment like lawn mowers, circular saws, chain saws are extremely dangerous and just like driving an automobile, requires your full attention and focus while operating it. So, my thanks goes out to all you morons out there that never seem to use any form of common sense when using one of these essential tools.

Wow, I agree with many of your points. I agree with you on the fact that the govt has ruined the newer gas engines. I still work on older lawnmowers and in my opinion the older 190CC briggs and stratton engines are the best and easiest to work on. I actually have A 20 YEAR OLD Craftsman mower that I brought back to life and adjusted the govenor to run at a slightly higher RPM so when fall comes, I have something to pick up and mulch leaves. This electric mower is great at mowing the grass, but I doubt it will pickup and mulch wet leaves like the old gas mowers could. These "newer" gas mowers are underpowered and built cheaply... I'm disappointed with that change.

Why does the government have to make regulations? that's a no brainer. because there is a minority in company's and individuals that think they know best and can do anything they want to the environment, which belongs to all of us. So if a company pollutes the air or water it affects me and my kids and their kids. Just like a minority think gas powered cars, mowers ect.. have no effect on global warming but there is plenty of scientific evidence to the contrary. Even with these regulations we've destroyed so much and another wildlife species goes extinct every few days so can you imagine if we had no regulations/rules? Gas cars, ect.. are going the way of the dinosaurs deal with it.

A couple of things. First, I get it. You are 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 digging this lawnmower, L0L. I like your "real" user review. Most of these "reviews" sound like a paid infomercial. I have an 𝗼𝗹𝗱 (20yrs? can't remember) craftsman SP gas that really should be replaced, the self propelled part gave up over 10 years ago so I removed all the propelling mechinisims but the rest of the mower still gets the job done. Now retired, I take extended motorcycle trips (two weeks to a month) and while I'm gone the wife doesn't cut the grass because she can't start the old gas lawn mower (for me this old beast still starts on the first pull but you have to know it's idiosyncrasies). I'm considering this model because..... most of these electric/battery mower motors aren't as powerful in anything but ideal conditions compared to gas. this model I think has a higher tourque motor than the lesser models if I understand it right plus the twin "select cut" blades are advertised to do a better job....not to mention HD has a sale right now + and additional 10% "veterans" discount. We have a small city lot so there's not a lot of grass to cut. (less than what you have). Thoughts?

This is a great low maintenance mower that will never give you problems starting, super easy to use, and so far has always gotten the job done. While you are gone, your wife would not have issues cutting the lawn... it is also super lightweight so its a breeze to push around. My main concern is how long these batteries will last. I've seen videos of people who have 5 year old EGO batteries that are are still going strong while others have negative experience. The other concern I have with this mower is mulching leaves, in the fall where I live it always rains and I like to mulch my leaves with my mower. I am not sure if this mower can mulch wet leaves as it requires high RPM's to suck up wet derbies and mulch it. My back-up plan... (If you noticed at the end of my video), I am working on a old Craftsman mower that I found cheaply . I'm fixing it up and plan on adjusting the governor to purposely run this gas mower at a higher RPM just for fall mulching if needed. If you choose to get the new EGO mower... my advice is to keep your old gas one, then clean and tune it up, then store it somewhere in case you need it.

I am not sure that this has more power than your average gas mower... but it does have a few tricks up it's sleeve. Because the power is continuous you don't have the times between the stroke cycle of a normal engine. This means that it is much harder to bog down in thick grass or tall weeds. Another trick is that EGO mowers monitor the blade speed (or at least this model, not sure about others), and if it finds the blade is slowing down, then it will give it more juice to compensate. Now, my understanding is that this is a temporary boost of power, but I have not found anything that says how long it can go. Not sure if it is based on time, or battery condition, or battery/motor temp... it's a mystery! But it does seem to help in 1 spot in my yard. That said, if you read some technical reviews you will find that the actual blade speed of electric mowers is frankly not as fast as a similarly priced gas mower. Mine seems to make a nice clean cut... but it is also only a few months old. I imagine the largest impact here is that you need to make a little extra effort to keep the blade sharp to keep the cut quality good... but it also comes with 2 blades, so that makes it easier. Anecdotally, my yard has it all; Several types of grass, some very thick spots, lots of spots overcrowded by weeds, and I refuse to cut more than 1 time a week so it often gets pretty tall and bushy, but nothing so far this year has made it bat an eye. Because I no longer have to slow down, it has cut my mowing time from 45-60 minutes down to 30-40 minutes. From just over 1 full tank of gas, to 1/3rd of a battery charge, so I no longer have to refuel part way through. I have bumps and roots, and the self-propel has little issue navigating this, and the plastic bed is more than ridged enough to keep the cuts even. If you are on a smaller lot, and are in good physical shape, then save yourself some money and get one that is not self-propelled. These are lighter than traditional mowers, so they aren't that hard to push around, and if the big battery that comes with this model can do my whole yard on 1/3rd of a charge, then the smaller normal battery will be more than adequate unless you have a really huge yard to work with. And even if you do have a yard larger than 1 of the smaller batteries can do... that is still going to be about 1 hour of run time on the small battery (~70-90 min on the big battery), so a 20 minute break to do something else, or get a drink is not a bad idea. And in 20 minutes the battery will be at an 80% charge and ready to go for the better part of another hour. Waiting for a full charge will take about 45 minutes from empty, but there is no need to wait that long until you are done for the day. But seriously though, this thing is overkill for my yard, and I have a good sized yard. It was a splurge purchase because it was on a great sale at the time and I had just gotten a work bonus. Had I known I was going to be in lockdown for 3 months after I bought it, I probably would have gotten one that is $200 cheaper lol. Anywho; hope that helps!

I also noticed how easy the front flips up, but I find that only happens when the bag gets full and is pulling it back. Takes about 3 bags to get through my yard, so I just use that as a gague as to when to empty the bag. Havent noticed it tipping back on an empty bag though. The speed gague does need a little more resistance to it though, I go under some short trees and the twigs on the branches are enough to slow it down. Also the headlights should be better. Still better than holding my cell phone's flashlight in front of me... but not much! After the warranty expires I may play with trying to 'upgrade' the light situation. Nothing a little wire and LEDs cant fix!

Especially in the spring, I may have to mow every four days taking 2 inches off the top in areas of what looks to be denser grass than I see here. Do you think this handle it? It can even bog down my gas mower. My yard is not flat. In the front it's sloped maybe 30 °. On the side I have a 5 foot tall hill that is sloped 40° or 50° that I have to mow up and down. The back yard was a jungle, very tall and wet grass. I initially mowed in on a 6 height setting, got clogged only about 4 times, but I was putting it through some insane grass. This would have clogged my gas power mower too many times to count. as the day progressed I recut the front yard on the 2 height setting, looks amazing. I have about a 45 degree 20x120 foot slope in my back yard, it crushed all the tall grass with ease. I used to cringe evertime I had to even think about mowing that part of my yard, this mower has made that task child's play. The self propelled and traction had zero issues and out performed any mower I have ever had. Simply put, this is the best mower I have ever purchased. I was so impressed with the mower I went out and purchased the new EGO string trimmer that has the powered restringing. Both of these purchases are worth it when I comes to time and ease of use, probably the best purchases I have made for my lawn-care. Hope this helps.

The supplied blade is the "high lift" one. It has higher air flow to help with the bagging. The mulching blade (slotted blades) is an extra to buy. It slices the grass into smaller pieces so as to speed up the decaying/mulching process. My ride on had jigh lift blades and bagged quite good but when I changed to the Gator blades (slotted blades) it did not bag as well. It would continuously choke in the shute.

Good video. I'm trying to decide if I want to buy an electric or gas mower. My gas mower(which is now broken) use to mulch my leaves so well. For example, if my yard was covered in leaves, I would take two passes over a section(in mulching mode without a catcher on the back), and after that I would not see any leaves at all in that area. I have been trying to find a video of an electric mower mulching a lot of leaves. I have not found one yet. Have you videoed your electric mower going over leaves and how did it do, in mulching mode?

This mower does NOT mulch leaves well. I ended up returning this mower and getting a gas mower specifically for this reason. This mower does cut grass well, but it's horrible at mulching leaves and yard debris. I would have thought EGO would have fixed that issue with this newer mower. When researching to buy this mower, I found several videos of people with the previous model EGO with that same issue. It's typically a loose "safety" switch that tells the mower that the handle bar is extended and not folded. If you bought it at Home Depot, you can return/exchange it and skip the hassle of contacting EGO to get it warrantied. Home Depot has extended their return policy during covid to 180 days.
