Is a battery lawn mower worth it? My channel is all about smart and sustainable technologies, but I never thought that I’d be wanting to talk about ... a lawn mower. But here we are. I’ve been using an electric Ego lawn mower for the past 5 years, but just upgraded to the newest (2020) Ego Power+ 21" self-propelled model. How is it? And why should you consider going electric over gas?

    @Andrej Spilevoj Yes, gasoline trimmers offer slightly more run time that electric ones, at this point, (tank of gas vs. 1x battery) but the electric benefits FAR outweigh gasoline as there's no need to prime, pull the stupid chord a hundred times to get it started, the noise, smell and maintenance of a gas trimmer, which I'll NEVER do again, it's insanity, in my opinion. I have 3x batteries for my trimmer as I've bought a battery with every other tool: drill, and saw, so I just swap one out in a few seconds, and keep them charged and just pull the trigger and it works, every time. And, you can charge/fuel them with your solar panel sys., saving money on gas. Either way, all power tools are going electric within the next ~10 years, or so.

    I think you’re right regarding trimmers if you use them that long. I use mine for 10-15 minutes each time, so it’s great for that. I think gas is far superior still for long runtimes or when you need that extra power. Gasoline is just so energy dense!

    I've had an self propelled Ego mower for 3 years (so you know the generational age). It is nice for all the reasons Matt said as long as your weather, work and life schedule allow you maintain your lawn as a regular set priority. During mid season if the grass is not cut "on time" I'll need to take partial cuts, about 7 to 10 inches, or the grass just lays over and clogs the mower. To be fair cheaper, under powered gas mowers will do the same. I'm in the Chicago area where weather, especially during spring and fall cleanup, is never a scheduled event and grass can get extremely long and is worse when wet leaves are present. The Ego is slightly under powered for this and at least twice a year I have to bring out my gas mower to address the heavy load. To summarize I really enjoy the quieter, easier mowing with an Ego for ninety five percent of the year but, I do not see a time when I could ever toss my gas mower while still in this home. As I get older, maybe I'll hire a service to do the heavy work. Thanks for the good review

    If you refill a gas mower when finished, you have a full tank when you next go to use it. Popping a battery on a charger and refilling a gas tank are both extremely simple and easy. Electric tools have some great advantages. However, with you saying pointless things like this, it muddies the intellectual waters. How are all the lithium, nickle and cobalt mines treating the environment? Hopefully most electricity in your area is renewable. If you are burning fossil fuels for electricity, then your cool lawn toy just pollutes form a different place. People are so excited to get the new thing that fits the current social norms without thinking long term and big picture.

    @@ToxicityAssured Pouring gasoline into a mower is non trivial as it is estimated by the EPA that 17 million gallons are spilled every year (300 million burned). And mowers spew since they have no pollution controls. With batteries you never need to go the a gas station to share toxic chemicals and diseases. Unlike petrol all lithium, nickel and cobalt are re-cyclable. Burning gas is much less efficient than electrically powered EVs or mowers. Please do more research.

  • @ToxicityAssured

    @ToxicityAssured

    @@johndonovan7897 Your comment was about starting off with a full "tank". I was unaware that research needed to be conducted on gasoline spillage. I rarely spill a drop, but I guess some people have more of an issue pouring liquids. How much of that spillage was filling up cars vs mowers? Mowers pollute much more per gallon of gas burned, but burn so much less than say a truck or SUV in a given week. Wow, you have no need to go get some diseases at the gas station... this corona thing has really gotten to you. What kind of gas stations do you have with sick people just leaning on the pumps coughing? Lots of things are recyclable, people still don't do it. Let me point the finger of ignorance back at ya, do some research on ewaste. Ewaste is a huge problem and all the Ego mowers will be ewaste soon, recycle that buddy. If you've read this far, I offer some respect. You say gasoline isn't recyclable, ever hear of photosynthesis. Plants, if we don't mow them down, take the CO2 and convert it into biomass. The biomass over centuries can accumulate forming... oil and gas. Long time coming, but gasoline is recyclable in a 100% natural way.

    I've had my ego mower for about 6 years now and I love it. I happen to love mowing and trimming the lawn, and do so regularly. I think the only time I have a slight problem with my mower is when the grass is too tall. Which rarely happens unless we're away on vacation. But even then, it still works, I just may have to raise the blades and go over it twice so it doesn't stop the battery from shutting down. Mine came with two batteries but I only need one per mowing and I still have power left over to trim (we live on about a 1/3 acre). It'll take more battery power if the grass is wet or tall. But it only takes about 15 minutes to recharge a battery, so it's not the worst case if you need to charge in the middle of cutting. It's super quiet and easy to push. It folds so compact, it takes up little space in my garage. I'm disabled and I could lift it if necessary, but it is heavy. Now I want the snowblower. My hubby doesn't want to spend the money but he's not the one shoveling, so it's gonna show up at our house sooner or later...

    @@ArtOfHealth while I appreciate the support, it IS 2020 and women can do the yard work and snow shoveling. My dad passed when I was 7 so my mom and I had to do everything around the house by ourselves. I learned how to do plumbing because we couldn't afford a real plumber. My husband loves that I can fix things myself because he honestly doesn't have the time. He works really long days, 7 days a week. He's the reason I get to be a stay-at-home mom and ever since my disability took over my life and made it hard for me to go to work so he works extra hard to pay all the bills. All that being said, when I have days where I CAN'T do stuff, he does it in the middle of the night when he's home. And I love mowing and trimming the lawn. I even do it for my neighbours when they're busy. It's exercise that I enjoy. Snow shoveling wasn't in the cards this past winter as I got worse so that's why we're saving up for the snow blower. I bought an Ego mower on Amazon and the manufacturer refused to warranty it because it was a third party sale. No argument about whether it was new or not, just a flat refusal to fix it. It failed after one year. I pestered them until they sent me the repair manual. The problem was poor quality control in the assembly. A wire was routed poorly and cold soldered. The interior wiring was embarrassingly bad. Once I fixed the errors it was fine. The design is ok, it's just the workmanship. I hope they have solved that problem. Just be careful about their warranty. Check to see if they authorize the sale. I tried to review the mower online, but they had suspended reviews. I have never run the battery all the way down. I run down before the battery does... I use it for weeds and grass, and I like the way it revs up when the weeds are thick instead of slowing down. Definitely a big improvement over gas mowers... Good luck,

    After a year of owning the self propelled model, my assessment is also favourable. HOWEVER, your review does sound a bit like an ad, because it omits all of the negative points that have become clear to me. To wit: - the cost is about double that of an equivalent gas mower - replacement blades are about twice as expensive - blades are thinner than normal, and more fragile - in thick grass, the mower will easily overload, stop, and flash yellow - the power is about equivalent to the weakest gas mower. So you are ok if your lawn is small and often mowed. - the mulching insert is a separate doodad to store and lose, same for the side discharge I assume, though that is an extra charge accessory that I don't have - and finally, the drive shaft for the self propel is a crude iron rod that began to rust immediately BUT, you did also miss one big plus - the plastic deck is strong and will never rust. Rusted deck is what ultimately killed most of my previous mowers.

  • @specialopsdave

    @specialopsdave

    2 жыл бұрын

    -You can (and should, IMO) get aftermarket blades, for all mowers, since all stock blades kind of suck -Overload to flashing yellow is much more pleasant to restart than a stalled gas mower -Definitely stronger than the weakest gas mower, I don't know where you got that from. Maybe weaker than Honda's weakest, but not weaker than an off-brand gas mower, not even close. -Gas mowers also require an accesory to hold open the side discharge door, as the chute itself is typically a separate attatchment. And yeah, I agree the cost is high and iron driveshaft is stupid. Hope they fix it in the next generation!

    My biggest issues are the rear wheel drive that locks up all the time. In addition it's much more difficult to start and stop. My old gas mower was front wheel drive and you simply lift the front wheels a little by pushing down the handle a little and turning. I know this doesn't have as much grip but it makes it way easier than the rear wheel drive that locks up and that you must stop whenever you need to turn around a tree or simply make a 180° turn. This dual blade may be better but the one I have now just will not pick up leaves and other stuff on the lawn like a gas more. This means a lot more raking or leaf blowing. Another pet peeve with all the ego tools is the delayed start. With the hedge trimmers and the lawn mower and everything it's frustrating when you are starting and stopping a lot to have to wait that seemingly short half second or two but it drives me nuts.

I did switch to the Tri blade and still did not have enough vacuum as the gas honda. Advantages are it's about $100 less than comparable EGo & the motor senses when it's in deep grass & rather than slowing or clogging like my old gas mower, it speeds up to handle the extra load! I also bought a spare battery (after a previous lead-acid powered mower which lasted only 1 season then would not charge & I could not find a replacement anywhere on earth - the company had folded). Once you figure out a mow pattern so you don't run over the cord (just zig zag away from the power source), it was well worth it. I went on to the Ego company community to investigate, and found that I was not the only one to have that problem. It seems that collapsing the handle, which is a handy space-saving feature, causes a short in the wiring. Besides that, people were complaining that it takes forever to have the issue repaired, and parts are sometimes difficult to procure. Disappointed, I had to return the mower to Home Depot. Doesn't seem that Ego has worked the bugs out of this model, even though a good many have complained about it. The concept is great, but the mower is too expensive to have to put up with such inconveniences. Now I have come to appreciate my more primitive, but more dependable, gas-run mower.

Our yard was the perfect obstacle course for testing the worth of a lawn mower. The GreenWorks 40 volt battery electric mower was fantastic. It weighed about half what the gas powered weighed. It was so quiet you could talk on the phone while mowing. It was powerful enough to take on anything the old mower could do. We never worry about getting gas, is last years gas too old? will it start? hurting my arm on the pull cord. Spilling gas or oil on the grass when refilling. We practically fight over who gets to mow the lawn. The old mower was this hot fumey, noisy, heavy, rattling monster. The new one is quiet, light, smooth, powerful and worry free. it's not going to mulch, but I've never had the bag on it. I don't notice clippings at all when I'm cutting the grass. i get an even lawn, and it cuts through the damn dandelions that have crept in lately. the battery will slow down or shut off if the grass is too wet or too tall, but that's an easy fix; I just raise it and go over it twice, if that's even necessary, which is rarely is. For the ease of use, quietness, compactness (it folds up, stands on its end, and takes so little space in my garage), and with the long lasting/quick charging battery, you can't beat it. I live on 1/3 acre now, but used it happily on one acre. I've owned mine for over 6 years and it's been great! I'm just getting around to sharpening the blades now. The biggest problem I see with battery electric mowers and other tools is the batteries. They die in the off season and after just a few years the companies change the design and stop supporting them. Maybe if they stop obsoleting everything they make every 2 years, it would be a better option, but then how do they keep ripping off consumers? I had the same gas mower from 1985 to 2013. It still ran then when I gave it to the guy that bought the house. Its hard to compete with that. It may even be environmentaly better to burn some gas than to manufacture 3 mowers and 6 new batteies to do the same work over the same period. I would prefer an electric mower for all the reasons cited, but big steps towards standardization and interchangeability need to occur.

    I bought the Greenworks 60 volt mower 2 years ago. It's self propelled which is required on our hilly yard. The main benefits for me is of course low maintenance, no vibration to numb your hands, no smells while mowing, a quiet mowing experience.

    I bought an electric mower 5 yrs ago. Mine is a Kobalt. It is so much quieter and lighter than the gas Honda that it replaced. Mowing my lawn with that Honda always kicked my butt, especially in the heat of summer. My wife would never mow the lawn. But she likes this electric mower so much that I haven't even been able to mow my yard in several years now. She loves to use it. We have two batteries and between them we never have a range issue.

    First time home owner, from Condo, my new house huge from yard, back yard is almost 6k SQFT, brand new house, brand new house and no clue what it takes to grow SOD and how to cut and all , bought EGO select Cut and power load trimmer and blower, boy I become pro in just few cuts, coming down to select cut, it's premium triple cut blade is super awesome as it really fines the cut blade so little you nearly have to see in grass, I have cut the grass in dark with LED light, I have cut the grass by holding beer in my hand with self propel, battery is just Monster, it cuts most of my lawn with one charge, sometime I have to borrow battery from my blower, and the best thing is the rapid charger, by the time I finish my grass my big battery for my select cut lawnmower is fully charged , wow that is super fast recharging. I can not be happier more. well worth the money.

    Just bought the latest EGO mower a few weeks ago and couldn’t be happier. We have just about half an acre and the mower does a super job with one charge of the battery - about 50 minutes of mowing. The thing I like the best about it is how quiet it runs. It’s every bit as powerful as our old Toro gas mower, but much easier to handle and leaves the yard looking better than the Toro did as well.

    Thanks for being an objective reviewer. I just purchased my first EGO Select Cut last week and mowed one time a couple days ago. Even though it was a hot day, and I was sweating at the end, it didn't really feel like a workout like my gas powered mower usually does. I bought it for the lack of maintenance, No Fumes, & Low noise. I no longer had to wear ear protection when mowing. I decided to wax the underdeck before mowing to ensure the grass didn't stick. That seemed to work great. You mentioned it came with a third blade in the box for switching out? I didn't see a thrid blade in my box.

Then I got the EGO snowplower this past winter and it was great. I was doing our neighbour's driveway as well because it is so easy to use. I also use the EGO leafblower to blow snow off the walkway and to do a final blow of the snow on the driveway. Love the power!

    I've had an EGo string trimmer and chainsaw for years now... and I love them! By the time the battery runs down on the string trimmer I am usually ready for a break anyway... I use the chainsaw a lot. As long as I keep the chain sharpened I can do a lot of sawing between charges. Typically I use the EGo chainsaw to trim the smaller branches on a downed tree. It is dependent on the size of the tree, but I use the EGo for about 60% of the sawing needed. Much more pleasant than the sound of my gas saw.

    Thanks for this clear review of the key aspects of the EGo mower. I've used a Works lithium battery mower for three years on a similar sized lawn to yours. It's not self-propelled, but as my lawn is level, this isn't an issue. The battery charges from zero in an hour and gives 30 minutes work. This is a cheap mower (150 GBP) when compared with other battery models. It collects efficiently but doesn't mulch. It reminds me of hoovering rather than mowing owing to the low noise and light weight. The only issue is the first cut of the season. I hesitate to use the Works for this as it could result in burnout, so I use my old hover plug- in cable mower, which has more power but not a lot of hover. This makes me appreciate the Works on the second cut.

    I easily get an hour out of mine, but I only have one blade... I heard on reviewer complain about the plastic construction but I have had no issue with the plastic after one year of use. Plastic won't rust. In all I agree - I really like my EGO mower and I have a model in between your two models. Also self propelled. And my wife likes it too... Just one thing to add - I remember hearing a statistic years ago that stated that gas lawn mowers are more polluting than gas cars for the amount of work done. Not sure if that is quite it, but it's a far more accessible way to cut your pollution than buying an electric car. But that great too if you can swing it!

    I bought the Greenworks 21" mower and I'm pretty happy with it. I have problems with my back and knees, so bending over to fiddle with this or that was getting pretty frustrating. And pull starting was getting painful. So, I said good bye to our 1997 Silver series Lawn Boy and got the Greenworks. I also got the 16" weed whacker and the blower. Now I have a nice collection of batteries and two chargers. I'm glad I went electric. The mower was $420.00 with Amazon Prime and came with a 4 Ah and 2 Ah battery, plus a charger. The weed whacker was $200 and came with a 4Ah battery and charger. The blower I bought a plain tool with no batteries for $80. No cords, no gas, oil, or maintenance. I've got my eye on the shop vac to add to the collection. I bought these based on the battery system, because when you start buying things that run on batteries, your buying into a battery system. I also bought some power tools from Power Smart with the battery system and price in mind. I could of went with Milwaukee, but I'm not a contractor and I don't use them everyday. Milwaukee was a bit pricey for me, but if I used them to make my living I wouldn't complain about the price. I think I'll stick with my Toro 5HP snow blower with electric start though. I don't think the battery powered snowblowers are quite up to the job yet. I have too much driveway for those. But, at some point I can see myself going with a battery powered one some day when the tech gets to the power our driveway requires with 6" of wet heavy snow. Still, I love the new battery technologies. I enjoyed this video.

    Good review. I bought the new version self-propelled model. I am a senior with leg/back issues and this mower has made all the difference in getting the lawn cut quickly and with little effort. The mower is so light that I have to remember to use the self propelled feature which does seem to take whatever effort there is away. I bought the tool only version because I have the EGO Snowblower (which is amazing) and it came with two 5 amp batteries that I use with the lawnmower too. I'm a big fan.

    I don't have an Ego mower but instead a 21" Ryobi 40v. Opted for the version without self propulsion since my yard is flat. It came with a 6ah battery that's enough to mow my whole yard, 60' x 130'. Only 4 cents of electricity to mow my whole lawn lol. Loving the family of tools that use the same battery.

    Where do you store the battery? Also be careful charging right after use when the battery is still warm. I have the 7.5 battery for two years without any problems. The only other thing I can think of is try not to run it down into the red zone, they say lithium batteries last longer if you keep them between thirty and eighty%.

    I've been using the Ego 21 inch self propelled mower, where and leaf blower for about 6 months and I love the products. There mower came with as her battery and I can mow my entire yard in one charge. It even has headlights in case you're mowing later than you expected. It's super quiet--to there point I had to remove my headphones while listening to music to make sure it was still running. When you're done you can fold it up to store it in the garage. The edger has a smaller battery, but again I can edge the whole yard and then use the same battery with the leaf blower. I'll never go back to a corded edger or gas mower. Great review and I completely agree!

    Had my Ego lawnmower for 2 years now and love it. It does tend to leave a slight trail behind no matter how much I overcut. My Honda handled this much better. But other than that, the mower is great. I have many of their other tools (edger, hedge trimmer, string trimmer). I like them although maybe the hedge trimmer is not as good as my Stihl gasser was. My problem with Ego is customer support. last year I bought one of their power station inverter generators. It'll run my fridge all day with 4 - 7.5 AH batteries during a power outage. Its a nice alternative (albeit a bit pricy) to a generator. Back in April, I had a problem and one of the battery stations failed to work. After going back and forth proving when I bought it (I'd lost the Home Depot receipt) they finally authorized me to return it. Then the problems really began. They would send ambiguous shipping information to me, and when I asked for clarification the email would go unanswered for weeks. Finally, complete radio silence (its now July). Like most people, the last few months have presented challenges more important than getting this thing replaced. But now I need to start bugging them by phone. I've heard other people complain about customer support issues (check Home Depot's reviews on Ego products). Its disappointing because I really like their stuff and have a lot invested in the battery ecosystem.

I have a few minor complaints that I think people may not think of, I didn't, that might be helpful when trying to decide if you want to buy. #1 you will not want to mow wet grass AT ALL. It may work but it's just not designed for it. #2 You will not be mowing in any kind of rain, see #1. #3 You can not clean this mower with a hose.

    I just bought one of the newer ones (2023 models) and forgot you did a vid on these guys. I gotta say, with how good battery electric tools have gotten, gas powered yard tools are just a non-starter now, even if you do a lot of yard work. Almost no maintenance or mess, and never once need to go out to refill a gas can to bring back, or have to mix some ratio of oil into in order to properly lube the machine and not forget which is which, when I can just take a battery off a charger, plop the depleted one on, and get right back to it, and by the time the one I’m using is out the other is recharged. And I think the thing that really clinched it for me was one of my buddies runs a landscaping business and he’s in the process of converting the business to battery electric too just because the ROI on each machine is laughably quick, just a little bit of cleaning them each day is enough instead of having to do a full workup on each machine practically every other week, and using dozens of gallons of gas each week to boot.

    I purchased the EGO mower last summer and it is the best. The only downside is that it doesn't bag really wet grass like my old 5HP gas mower. But I will never go back to gas, it's quiet, no maintenance except for charging the battery and cleaning. I loved it so much that I also purchased their snowblower, now I never need to worry if it's going to start after a snow storm.

    I’ve had a self propelled ego mower since 2016. Thought it was great at first, then the variable speed broke. Had to wait to winter to send it in for repair. Local lawn mower places won’t work on them. When I got it back I was ready for spring. Put the battery in & no power to the blade. Sucks when it’s your only lawn mower and you have to send it in for 4 to 6 weeks to get repaired in spring. Paid for my lawn being cut while it was in the shop. Got it back and now battery is going out. Battery at first lasted for most of the yard (1/3 acre). Now it lasts for a quarter to half the yard. Finally my variable speed has broken again. Stuck on fast, again. I had dreams of this being a great mower. Maybe I got a lemon? Now I’m looking for a mower.

    When I bought my first home about 15 years ago I made a decision to not buy any gas-powered yard tools. I use a mix of plug-in, battery powered, and hand powered tools. Since then I've spent basically 0 time maintaining my yard tools. I'm still on the same mower (a plug in model). I don't have to keep cans of gas or oil in my garage, and I can leave my tools sit for a year or more between uses and not have to worry about whether they will fire up or not. Unless you have a huge yard or have to take care of several yards, it's totally worth it to go electric.
