Focusrite Control Loopback - Step-by-Step Setup Guide

Control all your Application Audio, Microphones, Instruments and more Individually for recording, streaming, and even video calls using Loopback on your Scarlett 3rd gen audio interface.
This is the third video in my Focusrite Control series.
Create custom mixes for you audience whether you are a game streamer, performing music live, or doing an audition or presentation on a video conferencing platform.
Loopback will take your computer audio to the next level.
*** Note that the integrated loopback functions in Focusrite Control are only available on Scarlett 4i4, 8i6, 18i8, and 18i20 3rd gen as well as Clarett Thunderbolt interfaces only. (Clarett USB and Clarett Plus series do no have integrated loopback through Focusrite Control). The Scarlett 8i6 1st gen also supports loopback, however it is configured using Scarlett Mix Control instead of Focusrite Control.
** I will have another video coming soon that explains how to create loopback on interfaces not supporting loopback directly within Focusrite Control.

    This is the 3rd video in my Focusrite Control series. Loopback is the audio mixer that allows you to create custom mixes for apps that only work with one input (think StreamYard or video conferencing) + it gives you an additional mix for apps that do (think OBS). Built-in lookback in FC works with Scarlett 4i4, 8i6, 18i8, and 18i20 3rd gen and the original Clarett Thunderbolt interfaces. If you have another interface (Focusrite and others), I will have another tutorial coming soon to show you how to get loopback when it isn't built-in. Thanks for checking out loopback vid and let me know in the comments if there is another tutorial you'd like to see! Cheers!

    Good question, having loopback built-in is very convenient. The workaround most use it to connect the SPDIF in and out together on the 4 and 8 pre (not available on the 2 pre) and to use that as a loopback which is fine as long as you don't need SPDIF for other gear...

    I need some more info about your interface and what you have connected. Losing sound could be due to clocking. The reason I ask is that I also saw your question about not getting sound over SPDIF from your HDMI extractor. Most extractors will output at 48kHz, but if your interface clock is set to internal you may not get audio from a SPDIF input that cannot be clocked to your interface (most extractors do not have a SPDIF input for clock). You could try setting the clock source on your interface to SPDIF with a sample rate of 48kHz to see if you get audio.

    First of all, great video! I am using a Focusrite 18i8 interface and have a question about recording two separate telephone lines (MicroSIP soft phone) into a DAW, and routing those lines so they can communicate with microphones plugged into Analog Inputs 1 & 2 (those mics are routed via outputs 3 & 4 to outboard compressors coming in as hardware inserts on Line Inputs 5 & 6). Analog 3 is my talkback mic input for communicating with people on Mics 1 & 2, but not the phone lines. Analog 4 input on the front panel is empty. The problem is I can hook one tel line, but since everything comes via Loopback 1 & 2, when I press record in a DAW, my microphones get recorded into tel line DAW channel. I'd like to have two mono phone line signals recorded into their own DAW channels (Tel 01 & Tel 02), as well as two microphones recorded into their own DAW channels (Mic 01 & Mic 02). I'd like each of the phones to hear both Mics 01 & 02 and also to be able to hear the other telephone speaker (Tel 01 hears Tel 02 + both Mic 01 & Mic 02 and Tel 02 hears Tel 01 + both Mic 01 & 02). Can I at least set up one phone line? Is it possible to set up two Mono Loopback channels and somehow loop each phone software into it's own channel and record it into DAW without getting the Mics from live room? Is this even possible with 18i8? This is the current I/O situation on my 18i8: Analog 01 - Mic 01 (Live Room) Analog 02 - Mic 02 (Live Room) Analog 03 - Talkback Mic (Control Room) Analog 04 - Empty Line Outputs 01-02 - Speakers Line Output 03 - Analog 01 going into outboard compressor and coming back via Line Input 05 Line Output 04 - Analog 02 going into outboard compressor and coming back via Line Input 06 Line Outputs 05-06 - headphone distribution from Live Room (headphones for people on Mic 01 & Mic 02) Line Outputs 07-08 - Empty The more I'm into this problem, the more confused I get, so any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I don`t want to be scrambling around the back of my rack swapping cables when I wanted a CD player permanently attached. Do I send it back and get the cheaper one? I`ve just realised, I checked out a manual on the web for the 8 Pre which did have loopback, so with the 8+, Focusrite decided to go backwards. Brilliant.

    I use virtual cable for a couple of specific use-cases. When I’m recording these videos, I use it to send the monitor output from OBS studio where I don’t want to monitor audio through the desktop or I don’t want to cause a potential ASIO conflict with other applications. The other application is when I need to use OBS as a source for Zoom calls. I could also do this with NDI, but I have found the virtual cable gets the job done and has been reliable in my applications. Great question, thanks for asking!

    No, getting an interface with loopback was a good decision. To record your DAW into OBS, loopback is the ideal option in my experience as it will not cause any issues with ASIO in your DAW and is widely compatible with many other applications in case you want to use something other than OBS. I recommend a virtual cable or NDI for output from OBS into other applications, for your use case (bringing audio into OBS from an ASIO based application), loopback is the best option.

  • @askdrtk

    Zoom participant's audio will loop back into the call if you have the audio input on Zoom set to loopback. That said, you can create a custom mix in FC for the Loopback and assign audio output from Zoom to an output other than your main output 1-2. This could be done with virtual IO or on an interface such as an 18i20 where headphone output can be sent from outputs (7-8 or 9-10) rather than mirroring 1-2.

  • @askdrtk

    @askdrtk

    Жыл бұрын

    Glad to help out! If you are not planning to record, you can create the same mix in Focusrite Control for the output going to your headphones (which output depends on which interface you have). If you are not worried about using plugins with your bass, this is all you need to do. To use plugins for your bass, you would add the input from your bass to a track in your DAW, add the plugins to that tract, and then select an output for the DAW track to add to the mix you have created in Focusrite Control. The issue with using plugins in you DAW is latency. There will be a delay in hearing your bass when monitoring through the DAW. To minimize this, you would set the buffer size lower (and possibly the sample size higher) on your interface, but not so low as to cause a crackling sound. How low the buffer can go will depend on your computer's ability to handle the processing. You generally need to experiment a bit to find out how low you can set the buffer and determine if latency is low enough for you to use it for playing live. Hope this helps out!

    Glad to help out! Generally yes, by default DAW playback 1-2 will be combined with Windows audio. It doesn't have to be that way. If you want to separate Windows audio you can use the Expose / Hide Windows Channels option from the Focusrite icon, select other output channels (3-4, 5-6, etc), and then set those channels for playback in Windows. That way you can choose whether to loopback DAW playback or Windows Audio. To hear Windows audio through your monitors or headphones you will need to include the new "DAW Playback" channels in the outputs on Focusrite Control.

  • @askdrtk

    @askdrtk

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks, I'm glad to help out! The Clarett+ 4Pre does not have a built-in loopback feature, however this is mainly used to send computer audio back into the computer. To send computer audio back to your mixer without the original audio being sent from the mixer, you will need to create a separate monitor output from the computer that does not include the original mixer input source and then send it over separate outputs on the Clarett (line 3-4) to go back into the mixer (how this is done depends on which application you are using on the streaming computer). Then on the mixer, ensure the separate audio from the Clarett lines 3-4 is not mixed back into the mix being sent to the computer (setup varies depending on the mixer, but the mixer needs to support at least 2 channels of separate monitor mix for you to play in the sanctuary). This will eliminate the feedback loop and allow you to mix audio on the computer and play computer added audio with original audio from the mixer in the sanctuary.

    No particular reason, but for me the gear I have connected through SPDIF is not something I include in loopback for my purposes (and I can't show every combination or the video would go on too long...) You certainly can add SPDIF to the loopback output and in the end, the custom mix setup comes down to the gear you have connected and what combination of hardware and computer output channels you want to include in the loopback output.

    Yes, you would create the mix of sources (DAW, Microphone, and any virtual sources you may have setup for other apps) in Focusrite Control and then set the input (microphone) source for Discord to the Loopback "input."

    Clarett and Clarett+ (I really like my +8pre - great preamps/converters) do not have built in loopback, but you can setup your +8pre to perform loopback by connecting a cable from its SPDIF output to its SPDIF input. You then assign your application(s) to SPDIF output and record back into your computer from the SPDIF input. This will perform the same function as the integrated loopback on the Scarletts with no loss in quality as nothing is going through conversion. Only downside of course is that your SPDIF IO is now tied up. I will have a video on this up soon, but hopefully this will help you get going.

    Yes. Open Focusrite Control and select the output that you are using for your headphones (direct monitoring). Then select Custom Mix and add the inputs you are using for your microphone and music player (you can adjust the levels using the faders on screen to balance the mic and music). In Discord, select the input you are using for your microphone by going into Settings > App Settings > Voice & Video.. And I have my mic and music turned up to normal volumes on line outputs 3-4 which include my headphones (direct monitoring). However on monitor outputs 1-2 (which I assume is what discord and other apps are looking for as far as microphone) even though I have channel 2 turned all the way down here, I still hear my music when I test a recording. The output settings for line/monitor outputs in Focusrite Control do not change the inputs on your Computer, they are only for headphones/monitors. The issue you are likely having the with Discord using inputs 1 and 2 as a stereo audio input. To work around this, open Focusrite Control and select the Loopback Output. Select Custom Mix, set the output to Mono, and then add Input 1 for your microphone. Then either remove DAW Playback 1-2 of turn down its fader. Close Focusrite Control and open Discord. In Discord go into Settings>App Settings>Voice & Video. Choose Loopback... as the Input Device. You should now hear only your microphone in Discord.

    @@askdrtk I appreciate the detailed work around, however, the focusrite control software seems to malfunction and does not communicate properly with Discord. Closing the app and re-opening it seems to correct the issue, but I don’t want to have to rely on software working correctly to route my audio the way that I want to. For anyone else that might see this and want to know what I ended up doing, I bought a second 2i2 and connected both of them to the Mac. Then I connected my xlr to both with a splitter and then the music source to only the 2nd 2i2. Then within the audio settings selected the first 2i2 as the input and selected the second 2i2 as the output. The best solution would be to have a physical mixer/audio interface with multiple output options. Essentially two separate interfaces built into one but without the need for software rerouting like focusrite control or loop back. Thank you again for your help!

    how do i loopback my daw audio only?

  • @askdrtk

    @askdrtk

    Жыл бұрын

    It depends a bit on which DAW, but generally you would setup the output channels on your master bus to be different from the channels other applications on your computer are using (usually anything except 1/2) and then setup the mixer in Focusrite Control to have whichever output channels you setup in your DAW to be the only ones output to the loopback. To be able to monitor your DAW audio, you will also need to route the new DAW output channels to your monitors/headphones in the Focusrite Control mixer.

  • @askdrtk

    Mac works differently in that it assumes you only want inputs 1/2 on apps like Zoom regardless of the number of inputs available from your interface. Loopback inputs (9/10) will be available in your DAW only. There are a few workarounds. You can create a new aggregate device to include the 18i20's loopback inputs. The new aggregate device will be visible to apps such as Zoom. You can also use software such as Loopback which provides additional routing flexibility. Hope this helps out.

    Mac OS treats OBS like a regular music / video app and only allows two channels for input. OBS doesn't see the extra options that are available in a DAW. OBS could be written in the same way as a DAW but so far it hasn't happened on Mac. For stream audio with multiple channels on OBS Mac you need to use another app to manage the audio. Two of the most popular are Loopback by Rogue Amoeba rogueamoeba.com/loopback/ and GroundControl Caster by GInger Audio gingeraudio.com/groundcontrol-caster/ - unfortunately both are paid applications but they work very well in my experience. A free option (they accept donations) to capture desktop audio only is BlackHole by Existential Audio existential.audio/blackhole/ which also works well if you don't need to separate audio by individual app (capture all desktop audio). I hope this helps out.

    Both loopback through the Scarletts and virtual cable software keep everything in the digital domain (the Scarlett loops the audio back as an input without passing it through its converters), so latency tends to be more of a function of your computer’s processor, pci bus, and USB controller efficiency. On my system, 5900X on a Gigabyte Vision D motherboard, I have measured both and found I do not have to add compensation between the two.

    Loopback makes things alot easier. You can setup Steelseries Sonar (free) to create a loopback, but the Scarlett's hold their value pretty well so you may want to think about selling it on Reverb, etc and then upgrade to an interface with more IO and loopback when the time is right.

  • @askdrtk

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes. Setup Reaper to use outputs 3-4 to monitor the track (mono) with your guitar input and effects. Then configure loopback in Focusrite Control to use Software Playback 3-4. You could also use a mono track with only one output (3 or 4) and configure loopback to play only Playback 3 or 4 but in mono, but the only advantage here would be if you wanted to connect a second guitar using a DI to one of the out inputs on your 4i4. You would do the same thing on another track for your microphone, using outputs 3-4 to monitor. The loopback audio will appear as channels 5-6 on you computer. If you don't see them and you are using a Windows PC, you will need to go into the "Expose/Hide Windows Channels" menu by right clicking on the Focusrite icon where you access Focusrite Control. Now you will have a separate microphone / guitar mix for streamyard on channels 5-6. Setup streamyard to use input from channels 5-6 and you are good to go. I hope this helps out!

That's it, no need to worry about loopback or changing output settings within Reaper. Here is a link for Audio Hijack: rogueamoeba.com/audiohijack/
