Focusrite Control - Track with Real-time Effects with Your Scarlett or Clarett Interface

Setup your compressor as an insert using Focusrite Control for recording or streaming with your Scarlett or Clarett audio interface.
Inserts setup in Focusrite Control work with any DAW, OBS Studio, and other recording / streaming applications. You can have the best of both worlds, stream or perform live with effects such as compression and record unprocessed, compressed, or both for editing and mixing later on...
You will need a Scarlett, Clarett, or Clarett Plus interface compatible with Focusrite Control and at lease one available input and output (two of each for stereo sources).

    I made this video as a step-by-step guide to one of the most asked questions I get. Setting up an insert (effect loop) in Focusrite Control not only allows for zero latency monitoring, but it can help your recordings sound more "ready for mixing" and level up your live performances and livestreams. Plus, once you have this setup, you can use your compressor like a plugin in most major DAWs!

    Very nice video! You completely clarified my confusion about Focusrite Control after years! How do I add a Preamp 73 EQ in this signal chain?

  • @askdrtk

    @askdrtk

    Thanks, glad to help out! You could connect the 73EQ preamp output to the compressor input and then the compressor output to a line input on the interface (no effect loop required), but there is an advantage to using the compressor in a loop...you can use it with any input or even as an insert in a DAW. For that reason, I would connect the line output from your 73EQ preamp to a line input on the interface and then use the compressor in the effect loop as in the video. Works both ways, but more flexibility using a loop. Hope this helps out!

    Clear as Mud. A full demonstration using inputs and outputs on the 18i20 would eliminate the output selection confusion for those of us who are trying to learn. Still your video is much better than the rest. Thank You.

    Thank you for this video first of all (I am now a subscriber), this is the closest I have gotten to solving my problem, however I'm still a little confused on my Focusrite controls. I connected a MixDream XP Mk2 to my 18i20 via line outputs 1-8 into the mix dream via a db25. Then ran from the main outputs (XLR) of my mix dream back into my lines 3-4 on my Scarlett. But my Focusrite controls don't look like yours the line outputs are in stereo (for instance it says "Line Outputs 3-4" right under my Monitor Ourputs 1-2. I've got my hardware inputs set to Analogue 3-4, but the only way I get any sound is if I add the software (daw) playback 1-2. I know this can't be right, and I'm also confused as to why I don't see line outputs 1-2? It just says 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, and 9-10. I guess my monitor is coming out 1-2?? When I hooked up my mix dream I had to set the monitor controls to 1-4 instead of 1-2 to be able to control the sound with my volume knob. I totally confused and tempted to send my mix dream back before my 30 days is up. Can you help please?

    If you have 2 pieces of gear hooked up as inserts, say an EQ going out output 5, and coming in on input 5, and then a compressor going out 6 and coming in 6, can you insert them serially, so you could have a mic going into EQ and then into compressor and then to DAW? Thanks very much.

    Hey @askdrtk, firstly you make great videos and you are truly appreciated. I have an issue with my Scarlett 18i20 and Pro Tools. I’ve followed the steps of the routing in Focusrite Control but no luck. My signal flow is: Mic - Input 3 - Output 5 - 1176 comp - LA2A - Input 5. My audio isn’t passing into nor through the compressors and I don’t have signal on Input 5 beside floor noise; but I do have signal on Input 3 where the mic is plugged into. I know it’s hard to tell over text but maybe you could help? Thank you!

    Glad you are enjoying my videos and I am glad to help out. You will need to go into Focusrite Control and click on Output 5. Then, set the source to Hardware Input 3 and that should do it. Mic on input 3 sent to output 5, passed through the 1176 and LA2A, and then back into input 5 which will be available in your DAW. (As in the demo, you will be able to simultaneously record wet and dry from inputs 5 and 3 if you need to). Hope this helps out!

    Is it possible to put a compressor or reverbo inside the Focusrite control software to effect all the audio interface output?

  • @askdrtk

    @askdrtk

    6 ай бұрын

    Not as a plugin, but if you have enough IO you can use an outboard compressor / eq / reverb / delay as an insert for recording and mixing. A popular setup would be to configure Focusrite Conrol so that you can monitor and/or record both wet and dry signals to individual tracks in your DAW and to headphones or studio monitors.

    Does this only work with a real compressor, or can you record using plugins with real time processing?

  • @askdrtk

    @askdrtk

    Жыл бұрын

    Loopback is for hardware. It is possible to record using plugins in your DAW as well as in streaming / recording apps that support plugins such as OBS Studio. To be able to monitor with plugins and low latency (near real time) you need to choose a low buffer size such as 64 or even 32 if you computer can keep up without crackles and pops happening. If you are now worried about monitoring with plugins you can use direct monitoring through your interface and leave the buffer size higher (around 256) to ensure you do not have issues with drop outs, crackling, etc. I hope this helps out!

    Can these routings be saved on the interface itself? I' d like to use my Clarette+ 8Pre as a an USB Interface for my MPC One in standalone mode. I' d like to connect an Elektron Analog Heat to the Clarett so I can send my MPCs signals through the Heat and resample the processed audio back into the MPC. THX!

I also have a avalon 747 that failed to hook up . I put that back in my other studio since it was working fine there . I kniw it has to be something small im missing

    On my Clarett 2pre the 4 trs holes on the back are numbered 1-4 but underneath it only says output holes no input. Does that mean i cant connect an external compressor? Here is a picture

  • @askdrtk

    Great question. Yes, you can connect an external compressor on the 2pre. Connect your microphone to input 1, connect output 3 to your compressor input, and then connect your compressor output to your Clarett’s input 2. In Focusrite Control, setup input 1 to be output on output 3. In your DAW input 1 will be dry (uncompressed audio) and input 2 will be the compressed signal. Hope this helps out.

    Glad to help out! The RNC works with TS (unbalanced) cables for its inputs/outputs. The Clarett 2Pre will recognize unbalanced IO when connected, so two TS cables are what you need.
