The original Microsoft flight sim had an F-5 you could extensively modify. I remember having a forward swept wing and moved the elevator in front of the main wing, lighted it and gave in the max allowable thrust. It was fun. I was 7-8 at the time. Later in life I learned about the x-29 and it always make me think of that original flight sim.
Another fascinating interview, it's a privilege to listen to this guy.
Grumman: Why not do the first flight here in the factory? NASA: How many dry lakes you've got? Outch...
I could listen to this fellow all day.
I’ve always been fascinated by the X 29, so I’ve been looking forward to this!
Nice interview on a very cool plane. I was at the Edward's Airforce Base Air Show one year (Early 1980's?) and they had the x-29 displayed, either the plane or pictures, can't remember as it was so long ago. I also remember NASA/DARPA building and flying a 2/3rd's scale model of a forward swept wing plane as a proof of concept that had an insane turning radius and could pull 14G's positive and 14G's negative , more than any pilot could survive in combat. Don't remember the name of the program, but either Popular Science or Mechanics had a side bar about it with the title, "Darth Vader to Tower" to describe the model. Also of interest was the ASAT Anti-Satellite Missile (later publicly known as ASM-135) that they actually launched at a satellite and killed a target in space. The Warhead, was a Kinetic Kill Vehicle nick named the "Soup Can", as that was what it looked like, a can with small thrusters and an infrared sensor array. wonder if the F-15 pilot who shot down the satellite is still around for an interview? Keep the great interviews coming please.
Great interview. Interesting how the Americans are happy to see canards on experimental types such as the YF-4E, F-15 STOL/MTD, F-16 CCV, X-29 and X-31. Yet the F-22 and F-35 have more conventional tails. No doubt due to stealth considerations.

They probably would add canards if not for the fact that super maneuverability isn't the end all be all of air combat
Long ago(25 yrs ?) I think I saw a video of a F18 and X29 in a close in dog fight . I guess they wanted to see how it would do and they were in a downward spiral/scissor(?) just pulling hard into one another . It was a split screen with a forward cockpit view with grunting pilots and kind of a cartoon of the two aircraft showing their positions as they fought , X29 won but it took longer than you'd think . The video also had the wildest F16 demo's I've seen . Same split screen with grunting pilot only the external view was real time . It " looked " like that guy took off in 100' and never shut off the afterburner and never stopped turning . It was sick . I would guess that one was from one of the Paris airshows in the 1990's .
Part 2 ? .... hopefully there is going to be a part 1 to this please :D is that typo or did the videos get uploaded in the wrong ? .... or is this video part 2 to something else entirely ? Either way great channel and awesome that we get to listen to some fascinating aviators !! .. Thanks :)

@@Fragaut ..cheers bud, I've watched all those already, . for some reason I thought this was going to be a 2 part discussion on the X-29, the title threw me off a little bit it seems :)

@@freezatron Same for me. This channel is so great, but video description is sometimes a little bit confusing.

@@philp8872 yeah, exactly, he needs to get his naming conventions sorted out, something like Name - Part - Subject ie. "Kurt Schroeder - Part 2 - Flying the X-29" I think there would be no misunderstanding that title plus it makes searching for stuff easier too :)
The X-29 always reminds me of the jets GI Joe flew!

yeah it was a week ago. They did another one 3 years ago that was really good too. About the F-14.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
How can a forward swept wing fly trans or super sonic? The tips must cause additional wave drag.
@koc988

If you enough thrust behind it anything can go super sonic
