I was at mascot when the first F50 was delivered to Ansett, VH-FNA. Was always a fan of the F27, but when I was taken around the new F50, I fell in love. Ah, the good old days- I can’t remember off hand, but I think it was around 1987ish.

I have a real soft spot for the Fokker F27 Friendship . They were the workhorse of NAC (National Airway Corporation) and the second aeroplane I ever had the good fortune to fly in, after connecting off a 737, IIRC. It was around 1973 and flying was just not something working class families did a lot of but one of my sisters and I were chosen as the lucky one's to go on this trip and it is one of the best memories of childhood.

I may have mentioned this elsewhere Paul, but I was fortunate to fly from Nairobi to Malindi (Kenya) return , on an F27 Friendship in the 70’s. They still remain some of the best flights I can remember, the plane literally bounces around in the sky from all the hot updrafts from the Rift Valley. 😀👍

I remember flying on a F-27 or a FH-227 back in the the late 50s or early 60s from LA to Las Vegas on Bonanza Airlines. As a kid, I would fly with by Dad who would fly to Las Vegas to visit his sister living there. I enjoyed looking at the propellers while sitting alongside at eye level. As I recall, it was about an hour flight, give or take a few minutes. I can also remember Bonanza having the word PropJet written alongside the plane too. I always thought of the F-27 as a good and reliable commuter aircraft for the time. It seems they also flew to the desert resort town of Palm Springs which is about 100 miles east of LA.

I have flown on the Fokker F27 and F28 many years ago, both operated by Air Niugini in Papua New Guinea. The F28s were also used to fly from Cairns to Port Moresby. The F27 also had the wing above the fuselage so you could see the wheels retracting and touching the ground on landing. Not sure if there are any F27’s still in operation.

Hi Paul, enjoy seeing your trip reports. I live in India and have fond memories of the Fokker F-27 that Indian Airlines used to fly in the 60s and 70s. They also had the HS 748 Avro but I have better memories of the F27 which was a more comfortable and quieter aircraft. I have also flown on the Fokker 50's in India on the short lived RajAir and in Ethiopia on ET. Remember landing on a grass strip at Bahar Dar! They always made robust and comfortable aircraft which were popular with pax, pilots and mentainance crew.

My first ever plane trip was on a Fokker Friendship on a day school excursion from Auckland to Hamilton in New Zealand in the 70’s with NAC. I was 10. I was So excited. LOL I payed for the fare myself with my paper boy job after school. The trip cost $16.Including buses & a trip to the Waitomo Caves. But the highlight was being on the Fokker aircraft. I’m glad I got to fly on one. I liked the sound of the Fokker friendship engines. They were fairly distinct.

I guess the problem for the Fokker 50 was that, except for the engines, it still looked like a 1950's/60's F27. Meanwhile the Saab 340 & the Dash-8 series looked every bit of how you would expect a sleek, modern, 1980's aircraft to look (& the still look cool).

It was our least favorite ac to fuel, as you had to drag the single point up an 8 foot ladder not once but twice as there was no centralized single point system. I can’t say I was sad to see them go as they were replaced by the Saab 340.

I remember an old Aviation Safety Digest that quoted an incident involving an F27 (powered by the Rolls Royce Dart engines) at a NSW country airport. It took off and, once established in the climb, the crew noticed engine performance was a bit down and engine temperatures were running high. As a precaution they returned to the airport where they had refuelled just before departure. They landed without incident. The Dart engine used water-methanol injection to improve power during take-off. They found the problem was that the refuellers had put water-methanol in the fuel tanks and Jet A-1 into the water-methanol injection tanks. I don't know about you, but I thought that spoke spades about the fundamental reliability of the Rolls Royce Dart engine.

Skywest always had two flight attendants on their F50 flights. They also configured the aircraft to hold 46 pax which meant the seat pitch was at a very comfortable 34 inches in terms of leg space. As we know Skywest no longer exists (bought out by Virgin Australia and also tje F50 doesn't fly in WA anymore). I think Alliance have configured their F50s to be 50 or 52 pax? But as Paul said its comfortable still in terms of leg space.
