    Been watching the Susi Air videos from neighboring Papua province and the contrasts between your methodology in runway evaluation, pilot training and risk management and their lack of it is surprising. Plus they seem to lack ATC support and leave collision avoidance to the participants, too many of whom are in it for the thrills. You are commended for your professionalism.

    I still can't fathom how mission aviation is economically viable. I would assume that those costs for a short flight would represent a month's salary! At the same time it seems that the rates are more than reasonable given the cost of operating a Kodiak. I suppose wealthy doners are the only reason it works.

    From experience at Haiti, families pool funds to put one person airborne for errands that may be of a medical need at another location, or as a courier for medications purchased elsewhere and so on. Most of the transportation resources, be it ground, air or sea are thusly supported by collectivity in communities. People akin to Ryan are special for their cool heads and self determination. A good friend, "Lelio S." passed this year who usually did about nine take-offs and landings around Haiti daily, 4-6 days weekly depending upon weather and having enough fuel. He loved his work. Thank you Ryan.

    I do like your passenger one time to try to fly plane - he looks really excited. Road to this location practically was non existent till sometimes in 1998...only few people(if state guided) would do walk all the way to this location through jungle till 1981 with myself as one of them(9 years old kid subjected to MK Ultra)... and then road was improved into full hiking trail in 1984 - 1986.....and then road was turned into semi drivable road in 1991....and then real possibly even asphalted road appeared which would come to village, but from other direction sometimes in 1998 - 2000. British royals learned about this village from my case and have traced my whereabouts to one using same leads as Slovenian(probably Russian) side did prior to them. Man who sat at the front seat can confirm here stated as factual. I had to handle most of Africa(this location is New Guinea which is next door to Australia, but colonial Australian influence 45 years ago had a bad reputation with Guinean people rejecting one till British and Americans jump started my case) as an adult at my age 8 due to what they claimed was my size.

    I am not sure if the PNG Kina (PGK) is backed by anything. Definately not pearls though. This was filmed up in the Eastern Highlands, inland from Kainantu, the mainland. Out in the coastal 'islands' areas, in some places they still actually trade (buy and sell) with sea shells.... they are tiny little flat shells with a hole through the center, and threaded onto a string/cord. These strings of shells are known as 'fathoms'..... as they are 6 feet long. They have a nominal value of K10 (10 Kina) each, 10 yrs ago. A fathom is reasonably heavy. SO carrying them up into the highlands on foot wouldn't really be a good scheme. But the actual Kina shell has been used in the highlands, but I have not witnessed that. It would be a rarity. No proper trading entity would be interested in trading shells for goods and/or services over there, unless it was in extreme situations or areas. I spent some years over there, 1/2 the time in remote or extreme conditions, and I never had the need to use shells or anything else for transactions. Just cash.

    @@colonelfustercluck486 thank you for the detailed answer! Yes I have always wondered if their currency is or was backed by pearls. This totally dates me but I still have thoughts of native divers on a bright sun drenched location diving off of a canoe looking for the elusive pearl. Silly me right! lol but again, thank you.

  • @colonelfustercluck486

    @colonelfustercluck486

    5 ай бұрын

    the 'native divers looking for pearls' actually used to happen, in Torres Straight. The boat owners typically were nationals from S/E Asia, who employed the divers. From what I learnt, there were no self employed pearl divers in that area. I actually met an Australian aborigine, way up at the top of Australia, who could still remember how to talk some 'tok pisin' (talk pidgin) about 2008. I asked him how he new how to speak 'pidgin', and he said that he worked (free dived) off a schooner on the south coast of PNG, looking for pearls. He was paid on results. Many of his workmates spoke PNG 'tok pisin', which is where he picked a little up. And over the years he forgot a lot of the little that he had learned. But he could talk enough of it that I knew he wasn't lying. Now, where I met this fellow was really, truely remote, so I was amazed. He was a real old timer too. So his recollections spanned decades back in the past, he would be telling me about things that happened immediately after WW2 onwards. Foreign boats sniffing around in Australian and PNG territorial waters would not be accept able these days, so what was possible has changed through the passing of time, and what he said they did (pearling from a schooner with a foreign owner) sort of dates when it happened......... @@waldopepper1

    Have you ever tried to….”encourage” the helicopter pilots with your company to start filming?? I’m actually more interested in your videos but after seeing that last video with the helicopter shuttles that you filmed, I definitely got more interested..😂😂

    That’s what mission flying is all about. Seeing God’s word placed into people’s hands. All the hard work of translation is done, lives are changed for ever……thank for sharing Ryan. May God bless you and your family………Roger

    these days with most of my subscriptions I just assume that anyone in the video was asked. This is real youtube, not monetizing other people's stories/drama and just reading wikipedia articles and using public domain footage to make ad revenue but showing a true personal perspective. It's even more interesting that your family missed this place after being in the states for about a year. I don't know how long you were in P n G before coming back to the US but at your kid's ages I imagine it was a bit of a culture shock.

    Speaking as an ex-MK, there's culture shock both ways - going to the mission field and coming home again, which is weird. Which doesn't mean there's something wrong, it's just what you get used to, and things can be very different from one place to another.

    I agree, culture shock both ways. I personally find it hard to come back to PNG than back to the USA.

    Certainly soons some cargo cult will develop around you in PNG.... I rather like you giving some glipses in local life there. Whereas I really cannot understand many things the locals do in PNG. Certainly they to do not understand whe do here in Bavaria/ Germany, no Oktoberfest, Weisswurst saussage and pretzels there...(as for stereotypes)...Your passenger seems to change beteen first time seeing his home land from above and feeling somewhat unsecure/sick it is no 777 in the end.

    What economic output do these people produce that gives them any spending power to support this? You said you make a little doing medical flights. Make it from whom? The government? Just being sick and needing medevac does not suddenly give someone the ability to pay. Also, you said "commercial". I almost broke out in laughter. What commerce do these people engage in that can in any way pay the costs of running that plane?? Is there tourism to these remote settlements? Where is the commerce?
