    @Hezbinger Wet/drys will work just as good on a freshwater tank. They both have a mechanical filter media and a bio-media. The wet/dry, since it has a sump, has extra room for heaters, carbon bags (or any other chemical media) as well as skimmer (in a marine application) and it is all easily accessed. I can maintenance my wet/dry (on both FW & SW tanks I have) without shutting the system down or taking anything apart. VERY easy to maintenance. Plus a wet/dry is more efficient at nitrification.

    it depends on what kind of fish you are keeping, if you keeping cichlids then you dont need to spend this much on a filter cause you only need like a x6 turnover rate. However if your planning on keeping amazonian monsters or catfish which need a turnover rate of x10 then yes

    @harrowrudeboy i want one for a 55gallon tank because i want to keep red eard sliders that grow to 10inch shell lenth i think this will be over kill because this fillter will defentley keep your tank clean but it means doubling the watter in the tank because that will suck in about 15 gallons of water

    is there a minimum tank size for this filter? for instance, is it overkill on a 125L tank?

    @FPChris dude that all depends on what kind of media you are going to use and how big the bags are. i use a bag of lava rock in some of my filters and 1 bag is like 30 lbs, lol. no one is going to tell you what they don't know, just look up how much media it will hold and do the math yourself.

    how unhelpful was Fluval in their reply. Firstly, dont worry. I would recommend 25% weekly water changes. But get a fine filter polishing pad that will go into your filter. It removes fine particulates suspended in the water.

    I have a used FX5 and is sucking in air BUT i cannot pin down where from....i can hear the air from top of the lid...i have heard that over tightened lids can cause distortion and allow air bypass BUT i have tried to just barely tighten lid and still no help...any ideas what to look for? I assume since no water is leaking it has to be on the suction side somewhere?

  • @fluval

    Yes, it is likely the suction side. Have you tried changing the O-ring on the lid? Also, we suggest checking the input hosing side, and any connection points to ensure they are secure.

    After some further research; I decided to take it apart and inspect all O-RING and surfaces for anything out of whack...The lid & hose connection orings are all in great shape...i lubed them all up real good and put back on....took the motor off and did the same. On the lip where oring meets with motor had a very small chip..i am assuming this is where the air is leaking in from. I used petroleum jelly and put some extra around that area of the oring and hooked it back up...the filter is running much better now but occasionally i still hear a gurgle of air. I think i am good now or at least as good as it will be!

    Carbon needs to be replaced every couple weeks. Carbon loses its effectiveness after two weeks. The pre-filter sponges just need to be rinsed.

    @fishingman636 pretty much any filter is common sense if you have ANY mechanical aptitude. and too much work? i have a small canister filter on my 40g saltwater that i haven't touched in over 9 months and all the water parameters are perfect. just a tip, don't use carbon like everyone says, use a sponge prefilter that you rinse weekly then have mechanical filtration in the filter after that have tons of biological media, it makes the filter almost 0 maintenance and runs forever.

  • @13razorbackfan
    @13razorbackfan12 жыл бұрын

    Just skip the carbon...load the media baskets with either bio media(ceramic rings, etc...) or blue/white bonded filter pads cut to size. That is all you really need. Carbon can also do the job but it gets expensive replacing it all the time. Just not worth it. HTH

    Junk. Wet/dry and sump are WAY better and less money.
