Great work pulling this video together and they are both good filters. I especially like how they both offer more than enough mechanical filtration making them good for predator tanks or goldfish tanks where more waste is produced. Groovy.

Nice informative video pal. I used to run both a FX5 and FX6 they are great filters.

thank you luke :) it didnt turn out quite to the settings i intended as still getting to grips with the new pc lol but the style is something that is easy to work with but effective, just need a few little tweaks lol

I disagree on some points. Fx6 comes with filter media and carbon unlike fx5! Fx6 has a new pump that is designed to handle the pressure so there is less reduction on flow compared to fx5. Also Fx6 they are rating the gph based on all the media in the filter unlike the fx5 which was rated on just the pump! good video tho

+Tom Hughes (Tom Hughes Cichlids) thats very true, however the pricing is the thing that will sway it for some people, and based on first hand experience and from word of mouth of other users, they would say the fx5 is the better filter. Then it is purely down to personal preferences, when the fx6 drops to that sort of price range then ill happily change to it, but this is more a cost effective issue, where as if money was no option, i would sway to the fx6 due to a better look and better efficiency etc.

+Fish N Tips parts for the fx5 will get harder to get compared to Fx6 as discontinued Fluval wouldn't of wasted time bringing out a new filter if there wasn't any difference. I've had both and know the Fx6 has a better flow too but like you said it's personal choice. Fx6 all the way for me

+Fish N Tips plus on the fx5 you have to buy second hand and not many people would want to as a new motor is expensive and not far from buying a new filter so is a big gamble

Please explain how the Fx6 is more efficient if they both use the same motor. Look up a replacement motor for either and the description will say its for FX5/FX6.

well the thing is, fx5 are discontinued so you can only buy them used and if you can get one for around 140$ or less it's worth it. if you want something new fx6 is the best at what it does but wouldn't pay more than 300$

fantastic video i never know the difference between the two filters, i think you're right the fx5 would be my preference

Can these be used for saltwater tanks?

For that price & no UV lights or proper drip plate is bad design?

The canisters appear to be different in size . Do they have the same outside dimensions. The FX6 looks in videos and pictures to be a little wider than the FX5. The FX4 looks like it needs to go on a diet.

elcues that's because the FXX is bigger there's differences. Watch the link I posted in my post. Or for others that are looking to buy and affect sex today then they used F ex five which I would not buy a used old canister

I have 4 of each, FX5 is the better of the 2,The rubber knobs are better then the hard plastic, and I dont care for the white parts much,,,,as for flow the 5 is better , the 6 is a hair quieter, but hardy tell the difference. the 6 is a color thing really , most like the flashy color scheme. All comes down to personal pref. and you car get everything still for the 5., most 6 parts work on the 5 anyhow.

mike scully this is an older video but still relatively worth talking about you're completely wrong about the flow it's not more powerful they stated the flow incorrectly, the 5 shows the flow without the media the 6 shows the flow with the media in the 6, 6 is actually a stronger canister and even if you go by the box or the stats online the gallons per hour is close, so that's just not true.

FX6 It's also suppose to be quieter.kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z42s0caDirasd6g.html That site will go over it extensively there is many minor differences that he did not go over like a longer intake to for example, he goes over all the similar similarities but he doesn't go over the differences except for pretty much efficiency there's a handful of other differences they are minor but still nice. So when you add all those up I think it's still worth the extra money and now as time has gone by the FX 6 is pretty much extinct and that's FX6 has gone down in value you can pick him up on eBay for well under $300 sometimes. Pet smart usually is a good price and sometimes you can find coupons online to bring it down more. I can't stress more about the parts becoming extinct for FX 5 or becoming more difficult as time goes by and they are not cheap, yes a lot of the parts are the same for the five and the 6 also a lot is different. Great video!
