Hi thanks for watching. Its eheim 16/22 mm pipe and yes to adapter. Its a very quiet filter. Mines in my living room and I barely hear it. Takes a few days to get all the air from new one so a bit loud when setting up but otherwise silent.

How are you not killing the bacteria in filter by refilling the water from tap up trough filter media?

shouldn't rely on bacteria in any filter...that's what the fish tank does

@@ROTTERtube First off, you very much should rely on bacteria in the filter. That's a great advantage of a filter like the FX series, because it allows having bioballs or other biological filtration. Second, even if you don't "rely on" the bacteria in the filter (even if only the sponge), it's there whether you like it or not, and the chlorinated water is detrimental. If you killed it all, especially without removing the waste, it could (hypothetically) cause a tank to cycle. That said, the water is dechlorinated as it cycles through the tank. If you do it as in the video, where he dechlorinates the entire tank, then run the filter a bit after adding dechlorinator and before refilling, and the water in the filter will have excess dechlorinator in it (since the whole tank has excess). Should do that anyways, just to mix the dechlorinator. It still wouldn't be good for the bacteria in the filter while refilling, but it shouldn't cause that much damage, since it's 1) weakly chlorinated (as just tap water), and 2) only for a brief time.

You direct input tap water to the canister. Although you put de-chlorination in your tank but the chlorinated tap water passed through the media and kill off beneficial bacteria.

Its also worth mentioning that chlorine needs a certain contact time dependent on the pH of the water and the concentration of the chlorine. In my case the pH of my tank is 7.5 and the chlorine level from my water agency is 0.6ppm,therefore it needs a contact time of ~20 minutes to have any effect on my bacteria . In other countries your chlorine levels may in fact be higher than those in the UK, so its worth checking before using this method. Source : ohioline.osu.edu/b795/b795_7.h­tml

I prefer to use the main outlet to drain tank water. you can fill through the intake aswell. Dose half of your measure of seachem safe/prime or dechlorinator in filter and half in tank before you refill. Of course there will be no problem you just dechlorinated water. using the canister drainer is a slow process compared with filter outlet with fx5/6 pumping the water.I have a spare aqua stop valve. Chlorine kills pathogens such as bacteria and viruses by breaking the chemical bonds in their molecules. Disinfectants that are used for this purpose consist of chlorine compounds which can exchange atoms with other compounds, such as enzymes in bacteria and other cells. This process usually takes 5 -10 minutes to take affect.

Yes i generally do a gravel clean once a month, but i change my water every week using this method.

Hello, I have tried this and yes it works but you have to partially close the valve going back into the tank. Personally I think it's fast enough using just gravity. Also you might want to consider that the pump may not like the increased pressure as the outlet hose from the bottom is smaller in diameter than the standard fluval hosing.

Definitely going to try this. I’ve had my filter for nearly two years and didn’t occur to me to try. I use symphony and buckets a right fart on! Plus I have shoulder injury a bad spine and bad hips so it’s going to help my health problems loads! Great video enjoyed watching x

Quick question well first off good vid. I'm from the UK, is that a eheim green pipe then an hoselock 22mm to garden hose adapter. Also how loud is yours I was told there silent :/ any chance of an update of the sound nice 1

Where can I get a drain hose for this specific filter? I can’t find one and I tried using my syphon but it won’t drain.... I’ve been having to lift up the full filter and drain it into a bucket while I hold it up 🤦‍♂️

What positions are the in and out to? Are they both off , both on ?

I have 4 Fluval 407 and was looking around to get one of these precisely because of the water change. The question I have is by introducing tap water back c into aquarium through the filter itself would you kill all bacteria instantly since tap water goes through them or it somehow bypasses the biological filter.

Awesome video, love the ease and quickness of it. You truly covered all the info about introducing tsp water directly into the filter and how you protect the beneficial bacterial while running tank water as well. So many comments about that cause people didn’t pay attention to what you actually said. Great job! I love your drain tube connector to hose for tank draining, could you put that in your info section or type it in a reply. I’d like to find something similar :)

Won't this kill the bacteria in the filter tho coz your running non treated water running through it?

Where did u get theextra parts from ? And how did you regulate the water temp refilling the tank?

This is why i turn the filter back on; i get your point but it has very, very limited effect on the bacteria in my filter. If it did as you said, i would get an ammonia spike every time i changed my water; which i don't. In fact i have been using this method for over a year now, once a week. I have never had any ill effect from bacteria being killed off as i test my water very often.

Thankyou very much for this video. We are about to buy a fluval to replace an eheim pro (which has been garbage from the start and so is eheims support). I am now completely sold on it. I am looking forward to being able to do such a easy water change instead of using a hand siphon to pump it into jugs and then carry the jugs to the bathroom.

Its just a standard hose to hose adapter, I got it from a garden center

I see. My place here in Singapore the tap water chlorine level 2-3 ppm with pH hit above 8. Most of fish keeper here use dechlorinator and some age the water overnight with aeration. I once kill off BB in my canister when changing 50% tap water without using the above method and ammonia spike. It wipe out my endler guppy community leaving hardier fish danio just barely survive the ordeal.

What about the fish poo? Dont you still have to vacumn?

Wait you have to keep the filter off the entire time to drain the water from the tank ?

I believe the bottom port is linked to the intake side. The new fx series have a gravel vacuum that you can hook to the lower port and you close off the intake valve to do so.

I was just thinking of a similar idea of using the canister filter motor acting as the pump to drain the water out of the tank. I am not sure if I understand this correctly but wouldn't filling in tap water kill the beneficial bacteria that is in the canister filter before it reaches your tank water or is this the outlet pipe of the filter that goes directly to the tank ?

Chlorine in the water in UK is very low and the contact time when refilling is not enough to majorly impact the filter bacteria. Other countries may differ

@@EverydayAquarist Interesting, I just went to England for the first time in November of last year. yes, in the US we have a lot a lot of chlorine so my design is to get water into the outlet side since I have a Sun Sun filter but I was curious about the Fluval filter having a drain. That is a nice feature.

He is adding enough dechlorinator for the entire tank. If (as I do using buckets) you only add enough for the new water, it'd have more of an effect. Personally, I'd run the filter for a little while to mix the dechlorinator before adding the new water. Make sure you use dechlorinator and not "conditioner".

nice one mate cheers for that, yeah mine very quiet but the fact my tanks in my bedroom prob makes it sound loud when im tryin to get off to sleep, even a ticking clock sounds loud aha, i cant find that adapter anywhere :/ can u remeber the name or size to size sorry 2 be a pain just wanna follow your step by step lol

Just a thought, and correct me if I’m wrong... adding water that isn’t the same temperature as the tanks water (as it won’t be because it’s coming from a mixer tap with no temp gauge), means you may as well take the media out and since it under the tap. Surely if you are going to refill using a hose you’d be better off pouring it straight into the tank, at least any temp difference would be minimised when the new water mixes with the old.

As along as its roughly the same temp it doesn't make a lot of difference. This is one of my older videos and funnily enough on the newer FX filters the pumps are now designed to be refilled like this for water changes

Just as if filling a bucket, you can get the temp of the tap water the same as the tank before attaching the hose, assuming your faucet design allows turning it off and on without changing temp. Mine doesn't, but I should be able to get it close enough for a normal water change. I'd be leery of using this method to do a large (50%) water change. But even there, with the greater ease, you could do it in smaller increments - add 15%, wait a half hour, repeat.

Great video except on the refill. I rather refill with the hose because when you treat the water in the tank the water in the canister is not treated. As soon as you start the refill process the chlorine will kill off all the beneficial bacteria in your bio balls and other media. I do the refill with the hose. I do think it's a helpful video. Thanks for posting.

Hi, in some ways I agree with you. I have had this discussion with another viewer further down in the comments. I live in the UK and the chlorine levels in my tap water are always less than 0.5ppm. I also turn the filter on whilst refilling to circulate the water and dilute the new incoming water with existing tank water (including dechlorinator). These factors combined are enough to ensure that there is very, if any, effect on my bacteria levels. That being said, if your tap water in your region has a high chlorine level, then yes, refilling by hose is preferable. Thanks for your comment.

The Motto is drain fast fill slow. It's to let the nitrates from the tank dissolve. But the custom hose is nice bro.

Doing it like that is too risky! Get a big container and treat the water and bring it to the right temp and then use another pump to fill the tank,as simple as that.

So little known fact, chlorine used to treat tap water WILL dissipate at roughly the same rate as the dechlorinator will have time to react with it. Litteraly zero reason to use it. It is purely a marketing campaign to get you to buy something. There is billions of time more BB in your tank than you need. There will NEVER be enough chlorine in your tap water to even put a dent in your BB. Dechlorinator is fairly cheap so no real harm in using it but I thought this little tidbit would be useful in saving a step and needlessly adding any chemicals to your tank that you really don't need.

So dangerous... to do this...I don’t want untreated unaged tap water anywhere near my tanks. Water should be kept in a seperate vessel and heated, treated and aerated for at least 24 hours before going into the tank. I change 50% on 14 tanks every 2nd day and I simply pump the water from my holding tank directly into the tank. Even my 1500g catfish and ray tank doesn’t take too long ... 30 mins tops.

Killing good bacteria as well.

You just killed plenty of bacteria in this filter, this is the worst way of doing water change. You can use this valve to draing the filter before any maintenance of the filter itself. This way you wont spill much water when disconneting aquastop valves. The fresh water from the tap should be poured into the tank directly, just after dechlorinator, and after good 15 minutes, turn on the filter, job done.

fx6 don't try this on a 100 + tank.. tell ya why.. after half the tank is empty the canister drains and the syphon stops.. so if you want a 50% change its all your going to get. then if that's not bad enough you have to remove the lid then prime the filter and mess with it too get it going again.. all in all not a great experience with a 100 + tank.. best to use a python.. all the way.

Doing more than a 50% water change is not good in my experience. Only if there is a crisis in the tank water would I remove more than 50% water. Changing water above 50% always has an effect, especially on cichlids.

Depends where the intake in the tank is at, where the filter is at, and the height of the sink. You could drain nearly the whole tank if the filter intake is at the bottom, the canister is under the tank, and the sink is lower than the water level. But you should only be doing half - and never more - only if something is catastrophically wrong, like a disease you can't control with medication or the water chemistry is already super messed up.
