Fluval FX Fix & A Pre-Filter Upgrade!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In a prior video, "SunSun vs Fluval", you saw how the purge valve failed on the Fluval FX-6 and I had to quickly put a SunSun 704-B that I had in storage into action.
Well I've received the Fluval replacemant part and it's time to put that FX-6 back into action.
I'm going to take this opportunity to add an upgrade to the Fluval that I've been thinking about for quite some time. An upgrade that might have even prevented the problem with the purge valve had I done it a while back.
I ordered the upgrade part from Cory at the Aquarium Co-Op and here's what's going on.

    I’m using the same pre filter sponge from Aquarium Co-op as a mod for a cheap Fluval 406 I got the other day. I’ve used one before on a sunsun canister and it worked wonderfully. You’d be surprised at how much the sponge picks up, despite being so coarse. One of the best mods you can put on a canister filter in my opinion.

    Ben Ochart Overall yes. Although with a filter with a high turnover rate, like the FX6, you’ll probably end up servicing the pre filter pretty regularly. Plus a lot of the smallest particles will still end up on the fine pad in the filter itself.

    Great upgrade. I've used prefilters like that for a couple of years and it really saves maintenance on the main canister. The only downside in my opinion is the crap which falls off the prefilter when you come to clean them.

    Pre-filters serve very good purposes in sump setups to keep detritus and sand out of a sump but I was always wary about using them with canisters. In canister filters, you use multiple pads to catch detritus...that's why the intakes are open to allow stuff to freely flow in. This pre-filter will solve the sand issue but it very well may prevent any detritus from being picked up by the filter as well. Another method of preventing sand from going into the intake is to place large rocks directly under the intake...that will prevent sand from kicking up into the intake but will allow detritus to still be picked up by the filter.

    Hi Ben! Just wanted to let you know that I did a water change on my 125 gallon tetra aqaurium as well as some maintenance on my FX-6 yesterday 6/21/19.... Cleaned it out, put it back together and I noticed that microfine bubbles coming out of the outflow.... took a closer look at the motor and saw water dripping from the purge valve just like yours!! Glad I checked or it could have been a disater of water all over the floor! I ordered a replacement and is expected in 2 weeks from Amazon. $26.00! Kind of expensive for such a samll but vital piece of the FX 6. Best regards..Mike Im a convo gang member!

    Corys prefilter’s are great . However when using sand in a tank I would add a small internal spong piece at the bottom do to the heavy density of the side’s of the filter as compared to the bottom of the pre filter. I feel they are molded to deep for the internal depth for sand. Adding a small piece of floss or spong at the bottom will force more flow through the exterior diameter of the prefilter

    Ben I have a question, What if you just stuffed some coarse sponge cut to fit into the cage that Fluval provides instead of just putting a large sponge pre filter? I had the option to do both and that cage allows you to open it up and I managed to fit a rectangular coarse sponge that I cut to fit snugly.

    What I was wondering as I don’t have an FX6 the knockers say there is no room for Media. Can you take out all the foams in the top tray and place bags of Matrix around the entire top outer edge of the fx6 as well as the middle section As you already have the bottom two trays of foam water is passing through . Or does this stuff up the process of filteration?

    Ben most of us open up that cage of the fluval intake and put pre filter inside. I've never just used the fluval intake as it comes as I have Khuli loaches and they would swim straight into the intake and get sucked into the filter..

  • @BenOchart

    @BenOchart

    I tried that once and there was an immediate noticeable drop in water pressure. I suspect I might have inserted too fine a sponge and it blocked the pipe. A very coarse sponge in there would work (and keep Khuli's and fry out of the intake). Thanks for watching and commenting.

    OMG.....PondGuru strikes again!! LOL....This protocol is pretty much what he advocates as well. Do you think the added benefit of a little more Biomedia in the upper tray surpasses mechanical filtration there?? Watching some of Jay’s videos he also makes a good point along with some others. He definitely recommends “shrouding” or encasing the bio and chemical media with PolyFil. This catches micro debris which otherwise would cake or coat the material and inhibit adsorption/absorption. The Prefilter is also going to keep you busy keeping it clean!! Love your videos Ben!!!

  • @BenOchart

    @BenOchart

    5 жыл бұрын

    Richard, PondGuru was certainly an influence on me early on. I would use that "shrouding" technique with something like Pinky Floss, but not with PolyFil since it can break up and get strands all over the place.

    How far are you pushing that inlet pipe in? I ask because the intake tube basically blocks out that part of the top of the sponge from suction. Another observation, that foam looks pretty porous, if you have a spare sand please drop some sand on it and tap the foam to see if the sand finds it's way through the porosity of the foam. I like it for the food! What frequency are you going to rinse that out?

  • @BenOchart

    The tube will need to be pushed in around 1 - 2" to keep the sponge stable and on. I've moved the intake (you can see it in the 5/07/19 video) higher up so sand that is getting kicked up by the fish isn't getting sucked in. We'll see.

    You do not want to use Vaseline on your rubber O-ring gaskets. The petroleum-based jelly eats away the rubber, causing the rubber to stretch or tear sooner than normal. The preferred O-ring lube is a Teflon or Silicone base to keep rubber soft and supple. Fluval sells a comparable lube along with Home Depot or Lowes. Cheers

    I have had everything for filtration at one time or another in my 40 years in the hobby. And if I am completely honest filtration can be accomplished with simple sponge filtration. If large weekly water changes are made the use of expensive filtration is unnecessary and a waste. I have spent thousands on filtration over the years and would like to tell the world ( water changes and simple sponge filtration will be fine )

  • @GSP-76

    @GSP-76

    5 жыл бұрын

    You are absolutely right...and if weekly water changes are okay with you, you don't need any expensive filter media...thinks like cheap lava rock or pumice will also work...but, for some people, doing weekly water changes becomes exhausting. I have a large 150g tank and for a good year and a half I was doing 50% water changes every week. This was to keep nitrates under control. I eventually moved over to a sump and now have anaerobic bacteria colonized which is eating the nitrates and keeping my water changes down to once every three weeks.

    Hello Mr. Ben Could you help me? I need to change the canister filter that I have installed in my aquarium of 240 Liters 63.40 US Gallons) The SunSun distributor in Europe is here in Germany. The prices of these SunSun filters are spectacular, even with its version with UV lamp The truth is that I do not know if a filter of 2000 liters per hour (528 US gallons) or a filter of 1400 liters hour (370 US gallons) would be sufficient for my aquarium. My aquarium is a very planted Amazonian aquarium. I confess that I have read really bad reviews about SunSun filters, very noisy, frequent water leaks, and a very short duration, they spoil easily (so say the opinions on Amazon). But the fact that you use SunSun filters, inspires confidence in me. Could you help me please? Do you recommend buying a SunSun filter? Are they really such noisy filters and have so many water leak problems? What do you think is the most suitable model for a tropical aquarium of 63.40 US gallons? Is the UV lamp function useful? I have never used UV lamps before. Do you use UV lamps 24 hours a day? Is the lamp always on? Thanks in advance, Mr. Ben

  • @BenOchart

    On a 240 liter tank you could get by with the 1400 LPH, but if you upgrade, and when you consider that the LPH drops when media is added, you might want to go with the 2000 LPH model.

    The purge valve and stop-and-go valves are known to leak. There is a rubber gasket on the inside that dries out over time. My FX6 leaked several times when I found that you can take them apart. Now I take apart these valves every six months and lubricate the rubber rings.
