Hi Laurel! You (and all educators) are in my thoughts and prayers .... this truly will be the hardest year ever. I can't even imagine having to create both synchronous and asynchronous lessons, or any of the other things they are asking educators to do! Do what you can and don't sweat the other stuff!! :-) Your stitching looks great, as always!! ~Katrina

Hi Katrina, thank you for your thoughts and prayers. The first week of school went fairly well, but students aren't completing my asynch materials. I don't blame them. I don't give grades and they probably have a million things to do. How has your husband's position been going? Did he teach band outside?

Your stitching projects are fantastic! Your stitching is so beautiful. I really liked seeing the Mill Hill kit. My Mom just bought all of the new kits. She's 89. She can't do much anymore but she stitches and crochets and reads. A lot. Best wishes on your schooling.

I really feel you when you talk about teaching online. My friends been doing it last 5 months, it a very big challenge to just keep kids entertained and focused. Once they learn the routine ,they get lazy and naughty even more. I just returned back to work last week, Beijing government finally allowed kindergartens to reopen, but the work was even more difficult than online. After 8 months of quarantine kids totally forgot all the routines, regulations. They are basically scared of each other at this point. Plus after spending so much time with their parents it’s like they need adaptation once again from the very beginning. It’s a wonder you have time to stitch at all!

You are so right, Anastasia! I foresee the same thing happening over here too. The kindergarteners look SO small ☹️ and they are really trying hard to follow along. I imagine there will be many years of remediation and extra school programs after this has passed.

You are a superhero. My mom is an elementary school librarian too (she was in maryland last year but we just moved to upstate new york) and she did distance learning at the end of last year, so I've seen how crazy it was for her. You care so much and are trying your best when there is no 100% right way to do this. It will all be okay! I know it's easier said than done, but try not to worry too much

Loved your video. I’m the woman who went to two years of high school in Harrisonburg. Eastern Mennonite. You do lovely stitching. I love your book segment. Was interesting to learn about the first books you mentioned. Then you read part of Bear book about the library. I love that series! I’ve given some to my grandchildren and to others I think. Makes me want to buy some for me. No Visitors For Bear might be a favorite in that series. I LOVE children’s books and illustrations! I’ll name one book or author I love. A favorite author and illustrator is Jane Dyer. She illustrated series by Amy Krouse Rosenthal I love. First book is Cookies: Bite Size Life Lessons.

Just breathe! I'm also an elementary media specialist. It does get better. We are on our 6th week of virtual school. Elementary students are supposed to return full time on October 19. We are Canvas and Zoom but I've had all of the issues you're dealing with. All you can do is try. Your students will love you no matter what. Oh...my K and 1st grade students have been theost polite and the best listeners concerning our Zoom sessions! You'll be surprised!

I forgot something. Ricky Ricotta and the Mighty Robot by Pilkey is a step up from the Dragon series. My son is 25 and this series is how my son became a reader. I just purchased the entire series for my library....they've updated the covers and they are now in color!

We have Schoology for our kids as well during virtual learning. They are 2nd and 5th grade. We have been virtual since August 12th. Luckily, our school system has decided to go back into in-person learning starting next week! My biggest recommendation is to be very forthright about students muting themselves. It seems harsh but the kids get very distracted when others aren’t muted. I would hold up a sign that says mute at the beginning of each class. Have them practice unmuting themselves during roll call and then them mute themselves back before you call the next name. It’s good practice for them. Also, I would never encourage the whole class to unmute to shout out answers. No one can hear anything when that happens!!

Hi Jenny, I am going to guess you have experienced all of these interactions... and I am cringing at the thought of them. Although it feels unkind, I am very strict about when students are allowed to unmute. Before every class I go over expectations and rules with pictures and examples. My issue with the older kids is using the chat feature - it's so distracting.... for me! I hope your family had a great time going back in the building! Only a few of our students are being allowed to do that in the coming months. 🙂
