P.S. My initial listen was also a bit… underwhelming? It took me a sec and re-listening to the album to REALLY fall hard for it. I felt that it’s about the feelings, desires, conversations, and observations she had to deal with as an artist pre, during, and post pandemic. All wrapped in a witchy, crawly sound that’s borrowed from F+TM’s other works, but different in its pacing and delivery. My second fave album of hers (after HBHBHB)!! 🥰🥰🥰 Thank you!! xoxo (not Gossip Girl)

This is definitely not a dance album, even though it approaches dance as a source of freedom. This is an album about the plague, to the dance linked to anguish, which reflects the last years of the pandemic to Florence (and of course for all of us). But historically, Dance Fever was definitely not a happy festival, on the contrary, it was 4 months of people who just couldn't stop dancing in the middle age. At its peak, 15 people died a day from heart attacks, strokes or simply starvation and exhaustion. why? Nobody knows yet. I believe that with this background in mind the album gains another perspective.

i feel like you thought it’d be more of a dance album that has a feeling like my love, but she always said that it’d a pretty dark album and told us that the inspirations for it were horror movies like midsommar and suspiria! i personally love it cause the weird horror movies are one of my favorite movie genres so this album was absolutely up my lane

To understand this album I think some context is necessary. Lately Florence poetry and songs speak about this monstrous being, sometimes a divine entity, the character of the Song that she feeds by sacrificing experiences with people that should've been kept intimate. You can hear the character of the Song in Restrain, that's the Song almost mocking her for believing that she could restrain it, that song is my favorite even though it is just a couple of lines and it lasts just 40 seconds, its so haunting and even if you're not a songwriter you can relate to the feeling of taking from others just to feed your own emptiness. Anyway, Florence said this album is like a fairy tale between her and the Song, whenever you hear her speak about someone or to someone she's talking to the character of the Song.

Florence said in an interview on Apple Music that Dance Fever is mostly the aftermath of dancing to your death (Choreomania), and this album reflects on the "fever" she had during the COVID pandemic, after making Back In Town she said she couldn't work on the album for a 1yr and half with Jack Antonoff. I personally have grown with the tracks...we REALLY needed this album during lockdown.

for me this album is a complete masterpiece. every single song is like a painting.. the only thing that kinda confused me on the first listen is the pacing of the album, but right now i very much like it! also i want to talk about the songs and how i understood them (while reading the interviews with Florence and stuff): Choreomania - this one for me is about anxiety and panic. the song constructed very all over the place, which makes sense because of the subject matter (as the song "Free", which is also about anxiety) Girls Against God - Florence herself called this one "a big lockdown anthem" (or something like that). because of the lockdown, Florence couldn't go on tour and perform, sing and dance and it was very dreadful for her. in this song she basically blames God ("You'll be sorry that you messed with this/us/me") while also being very self-aware of how others might perceive her ("Just another screaming speck of dust"). after all, she is a human being, who is trying to get some control in this lockdown situation. at the end of the song she sings "I met the Devil; you know, he gave me a choice; a golden heart or a golden voice" Dream Girl Evil - ooh, this one. in this song Florence basically destroys the concept of the whole "manic pixie dream girl" archetype while talking about the mommy issues that the subject of the song is having. yes you've read that correctly. "Am I your dream girl? You think of me in bed But you could never hold me And liked me better in your head" "Watch me shimmer A projection of your mother But don't come crying I'm nobody's moral center" Cassandra - this one has a lot of meaning. the first one is the same one as in "Girls Against God": feeling that frustration during the lockdown days when you can't do anything. the second one is that Florence relates herself to the mythological Greek heroine Cassandra - she was cursed to always speak the true prophecies, but no one would actually believe her. Morning Elvis - this one is about an actual story that happened to Florence and her band! she was supposed to fly to Graceland for her show, but she was so drunk that couldn't go there. i actually recommend you to watch her latest interview with Zane Lowe, she spoke a lot about this album's themes and how she came to write this project. overall, i'm very happy with the album and the songs! sorry if i forgot to say something about the songs, or if i completely misunderstood Florence's words. :p

I felt similar to you upon my first listen in that my preconceived ideas of what it was going to be (a dance album) got in the way. The second listen had me hook, line, and sinker lol. the album I think is more a concept album inspired by the ornate nature of like Edwardian portraiture, and choreomania is a ritual where people would dance themselves until complete exhaustion and in one case 400 women in the middle ages literally danced themselves to death. The first few tracks were written before lockdown and the rest after which she said really shaped the record and like i think girls against god onwards post lockdowns you can mind of hear the record spiralling into madness and more dark sounds through to daffodil especially, and the the mast couple bring it back to the more relaxed outro tracks so i think its done good as a cyclical album in that way that it starts and ends more relaxed

I listened to this album for the first time while hiking alone (absolutely recommend doing this) on route to an abandoned mine hiding in the hills (after listening Motomami to start the trek🤣). I freaked out a little, had fear when i eas reaching the domains of the mine and she said that she met the devil after the creepy noises🤣 While not loving all this album (my appreciaton was similar to yours), i attached every song to a physical, route memory and i love that. Choreomania is one of her biggest songs, and is inspired by a "pandemic" of people that literally danced to death. Was impressed when i read about that. My love is a song about the quarantines because of covid, one of her best, energy pumping song that comes from the fear, the pain and the struggle of these years. A beautiful testament of these moments. Finally, i found the last song , Morning Elvis, similar to Sakura of Rosalia's Motomami; closer songs that end with the crowd. The crowd that was privated for these people that live for performing. I like how artist leaves testament of their times and witnessing it. I think all these death and "creepy church" references in the album comes from the death near experiences all of us lived because of this global pandemia. Glad to be alive to keep dancing!! (This last sentence could resume the entire tracklist of Dance Fever...)

I actually found this album very relatable.... very, very, very relatable. so, not sure if this is where she got the inspiration for album name, but there was a "dance fever" outbreak in the midevil times, where it was recorded that people literally danced themselves to death. when you consider the title from this perspective with the song style, I feel it makes more sense. additionally, from what I understand, Florence was struggling a lot during the making of this album, of which a lot of it was written during lock down. lock down and the isolation was a huge strain on many people's mental and emotional health, and many artists struggled with creative block, which for them is akin to a kind of death of the soul. I really hope you relisten to this album and give it another chance with these thoughts in mind. I've felt Florence has always sung with a certain kind of pure conviction about life experiences on a raw human level. This album is no different.

I think the difficulty is the marketing itself. Promo singles do not reflect what the whole album is like. Therefore when you actually listen to Dance Fever in full you end up feeling tricked by big production of those first few releases. And what the album is, are big tunes scattered between semi-acoustic ballads with less complex productions. This album is definitely a grower I guess and sonically as inconsistent as Lungs. It’s still a decent record but upon first few listens np fireworks on my end.

While I get the concept of “Dance” being a metaphor, this album didn’t resonate with me. I personally was hoping for a return to the more darker sounds like on “Lungs” and “Ceremonials.”

Girls against god is basically florence being mad at god for creating the pandemic and taking away what she likes most in life, which is her live performances. i think since this is a lockdown album it is a bit confusing, but i love it all anyway :)

You are right... you are not the only one that got tricked with the singles and expecting something else than this. 🥲 But is our Florence and we gotta support her ❤
