P.S. I listened to this album for the first time with you on Patreon hahaha 😜 From my understanding and research, “100 Years” was written from Florence’s POV on world events while writing the album, with specific nods to the Manchester Arena bombing of 2017 and the “Me Too” movement. The title also references the first women’s suffrage movement, and what has or hasn’t changed in the 100 years since then. A stunning album overall, though it doesn’t beat out HBHBHB for me. Also, have you listened to her debut album (Lungs) yet? If not, definitely recommend a listen!! ❣️😉❣️

Grace was written about her little sister. In interviews about HBHBHB, she mentions how Grace basically carried her through Ceremonials and HBHBHB eras. She was always Florence's 'Big Sister' that she never had, and she wanted to apologize for her messiness and inconsistencies for not being there for Grace and their family...

June was the first song she wrote for this record. The “ woke up in Chicago” line refers to the gunshot in Chicago that happened on the same day of the last show for the HBHBH era. Also June is pride month so that what “love as act of defiance” means

Sry to correct you but I think the shooting being referenced is the Pulse shooting that took place at a gay club in Orlando during pride month in 2016, which is why she follows it with the love became an act of defiance line

Patricia is a song dedicated to Patti Smith because it's Florence's favourite author! And she admires her a lot so it's basically a big fan girl moment for Florence because she just loves Patti. 100 years lyrics is difficut for me to understand but I can assure you, when I heard that live.. oh my, Florence was killing it!

The end of love is about some family stuff + in the bridge she refers again to the guy who ghosted her. Fun fact: The end of love was supposed to be the title for this record but Florence thought it was too sad and changed it into HAH since she was writing a poem and there was a line that said EVER REACHING HIGH AS HOPE and it became the title for this album

This is a full circle album. In June she sings "i'm so high i'm so high" and in A Sky Full of Song she says "grab me by my ankles, i've been flying for too long". Also in June she sings "and choirs sing in the streets" but in No Choir she answers back " There will be no grand choirs to sing, no". No Choir really feels like a goodbye to all her journey through what she passed since Lungs to HBHBHB; and it shows since she's on a hiatus. I really miss her so freaking much.

Glad you enjoyed High as Hope! Really didn't get the same publicity as the other albums it feels like but it is honestly intimate and I adore the tracks so much. Rewatching your F+TM journey. I haven’t seen anyone mention, but The End Of Love mentions how Florence’s grandmother threw herself off the balcony, which ties back into Ceremonials, specifically to the first track, Only If For A Night. Her grandmother is the topic of that track as well, wearing pink and gold, glittering in the night, and also how Florence got advice from her ghost, so The End Of Love basically confirms how she became a ghost. I believe HBHBHB also mentions her grandmother subtly, but I don’t remember which track right now. But yeah, all of her albums are lyrically connected somehow. Also the outro in Patricia is like the first time she sonically incorporates everything from her previous album instrumentally. It’s like a whole ode to her work, the chants are very Ceremonials, the cello/strings is very Lungs, and the horns are very HBHBHB.

Okay so I know I'm ...very late...to this video but this is awesome! Also, about 100 Years, it's written to emphasize the chaos of 2016 global events and how overwhelmed and helpless Florence became during that time and the emotions that tied along with that helplessness. I think that's why the song goes back and forth in scale because it expresses how you're hopeful that things will be okay but then news reports and other bad things get in and you get angry and overwhelmed and it feels like it's been going on for 100 years and you're just praying for hope that things will get better instead of holding onto stress and (maybe?) the wrong people. I could be totally off the mark though--SO, giant grain of salt. :D

Florence has actually WRITTEN for Sia before and it was " To be Human " for the WonderWoman soundtrack I was kind of mad at the missed opportunity for them to sing together. It was MADE for the soundtrack and WonderWoman being an amazon made it THE PERFECT duet for a sisterhood moment. They ended up bringing in Labrinth on it. Which was fine but damn. and when I heard the song I was like " Wow this is crazy I could hear Florence singing this. " and then someone told me to check the description and I flipped a table. I know her writing so well at this point lmao 100 Years is way better live btw. Like it sounds completely different. She REALLY gets into it and for some reason the stomping with it she does gives me something. I can't explain it. Just watch and you'll see lmao I also think this album is her way of showing she can do simplicity and minimalism.
