Daaang, that Madonna/Gaga clip at the start was haaarsh, albeit true. Ha. The thing is virtually every woman who has come up after Madonna has been inspired and influenced by her. She paved the path for them. But what rubbed people the wrong way about Gaga is that she’d deny being influenced by her and would even try to pass it off as her own creation. She didn’t only do this with Madonna, tho. There’s so many instances in which she basically ripped artists off without crediting them. For example the meat dress was originally done by an artist named Jana Sterbak in 1987. Madonna’s taken ideas from other artists as well but she’s always credited them and talked about how much she admires their work. I love a lot and Gaga’s music and she’s since definitely carved her own path and become a more original artist. But having grown up on Madonna, Prince, Queen, and Michael Jackson, their influence on her earlier stuff was pretty blatant. Gaga really shouldn’t have gotten as defensive as she did when people pointed it out to her. Like, it’s okay, mama, all the girls are doing it. Ha.

I agree, but Gaga literally stole Madonna’s whole career. It’s one thing to ‘take influences’ from an artist here and there, but that clip shows just how many times it happened, and then she gets pissy when everyone points out the obvious. That’s what really annoys me about her, and her fans who try to discredit Madonna when she did it first and did it better. Listening to a Gaga interview is so annoying… she’s so up her own butt and pretentious. Madonna can be a diva, but she’s actually pretty humble when it comes to her talent and her career, considering all she’s done, and as you say, when she references things from other artists, she credits them. I am perfectly fine with Gaga having her career and if her fans love her music, more power to them. There’s room for everyone. But just don’t be a rip off artist, and then take a stance of ‘anti-bullying’ but saying nothing when your ‘monsters’ attack not only Madonna, but her fans, too.

Where do I begin??? This is so good. How sweet of Ryan to create this video and provide such a genuine introduction to MADONNA!! A heartfelt thanks to him. I've mentioned it before, but discovering your channel and reliving this journey alongside you has been a great thing to watch and experience. As it much rekindles and reminded of memories of why and when I fell in love with her, as she has literally saved my life, that is not hyperbole. Ben, your reactions and your openness to delve deeply into this journey are incredible to watch and seeing the impact is remarkable. You're Awesome, thank you and now you know. :)

The Aughtdonna era is 1) Music/Drowned World Tour, 2) American Life/Reinvention Tour, 3) Confessions, & 4) Hard Candy/Sticky & Sweet Tour. Still an artistically rich period, but with less dramatic overhauls to her overall image in comparison to '89-'98. As industry album sales declined, more emphasis was put on increasing the spectacle of her tours. As a result, the music videos post-American Life are more perfunctory & less groundbreaking. She started working with Jamie King on the Human Nature music video, then he did her tours starting with Drowned World & ending with MDNA. "She's Not Me" is on Hard Candy. It cost me $28 to buy a special edition of the album which came in a black box surrounded by peppermint candies. I expect Ryan told you to watch I'm Going To Tell You A Secret. If you can find it, that is. Years ago, she removed it from iTunes, etc. I suspect because of the divorce. It's a great music documentary. Truth or Dare gets all the praise & focus, but Secret is arguably more profound. Ironically, I ended up working at the NYC Kabbalah Centre & interacted with her & her kids. Never fanned out even though I absolutely wanted to.

Interesting info on how the music landscape was changing and touring being a focus etc! Hahahaha love the edition of the album! Very camp! 🍭🍭

The touring market wasn’t the primary focus in the 80s/90s. Physical music sales were enough profits and people just didn’t tour much. Touring now is the main profit because a lack of physical media sales and everyone wants to go, even artists like harry styles fill stadiums despite not having many fans. Now you can buy concert tickets at a click of a button. In the 80s you would have to camp out side the ticket stall for a week the game is different. People also had less money back then it was very expensive. 2.5 Billion gross with inflation is crazy

@@lutalice yep, it’s so much easier to sell concert tickets now. you had to be really dedicated back then to even get a chance. As monoculture isn’t a thing anymore despite how huge Taylor is you can block it out completely, while you couldn’t block Madonna out

Long time watcher but never commented before. I really appreciate you and your takes. The Majourney is superb. There are a few other KZreadrs that have done/are doing the deep dive. I love watching others learn to love why Madonna is Madonna.

Look how much Rio de Janeiro profited - Rio should welcome her back to honor her with May 4th officially declared Madonna day and every year there will be a Madonna celebration on the beach...think of the income they would get from a yearly Madonna day celebration - people would travel from all over to go.

Wow. What a journey we have been on with you. I haven't always agreed, but I've appreciated your views. I'm absolutely hanging out for 2003's American Life era - my number 1 album of hers. And 2019's Madame X era - my number 2 album. There are 8 albums of hers that I cant live without - the other 6 in order are: Ray of Light, Like a Prayer, I'm Breathless, Erotica, Something to Remember, and debut self-titled.

Wow! I can't believe it's been over two years and we're now finally back to where we started. Excited to see you experience the ROL era with the full context of everything that came before it, which makes it so much more impactful. Plus, the videos, performances, and interviews. There's so much more to experience before we even get to her "legacy" era. She has at least three or four more hugely successful eras. Hopefully it won't take another two years! 🤣

begging for more people to react to Djo (DECIDE specifically, I think the production is super interesting) and The Amazing Devil (probably The Horror and the Wild, their genre is called lyrical alt-folk, or as one of them describe it "songs sad people listen to in train stations”)

She has a career like NO other musical artist. Of course other artists have been around longer, but the amount of work she's done and put out is unparalleled in my opinion. She doesn't stop! Between the albums, videos, tours, movies, interviews....It's endless! I feel so blessed that I've by and large got to grow up with her. I was born October 1982. She released her first single in October 1982. I can't even remember a time in my life when Madonna wasn't part of it. No one else comes close. No one.
