You are right. Most of the band is secular. This was a song about organized religions all through the ages. Floor is very good at getting to feelings through her singing. I am sorry you had to explain yourself. People need to think right before they write. I don't know if you remember the information. So I will give you some to help navigate the Nightwish journey. Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a female fronted symphonic metal band. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu. Then there is Troy Donockley who is a multi-instrulmentalist and does vocals. Jukka is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai became the drummer and as of now is a permanent member. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. the 2nd one was Anette Olzon (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from the Netherlands.( power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit live ( Floor). I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. I discovered them about 4 years ago. They are unbelievable live. Their music has gotten me through some tough times. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol

Marko (the bassist) and Floor have such a fantastic blend together. They contrast each other and still complement each other’s voices. Marko is a very accomplished singer in his own right, even beyond the rougher metal side he’s showing in this song. Just released a solo album which is very good and really showcases what he’s capable of. If you’re interested in more of his work, can check out The Islander or While Your Lips are Still Red (with Nightwish) or Isääni Ääni or Stones from his solo album (Marko Hietala)

Actually there's now a lyric music video of "The Voice Of My Father" too (that's the English version of "Isäni Ääni"). Even though I'm a native Finn, they both work for me just as well, which to me tells that Marco is a really good songwriter.

I will disagree with the majority here and say that the song is against religion, basta. I don't think the lines "Pick your author from à la carte fantasy", "Your only truth: tribal poetry" can be interpreted otherwise.

  • @raspberryripple88

Nice reaction and analysis of the song, and, as others have already said, I think the general concensus is that the song is, at the very least, a criticism of 'organised religion' and almost certainly critical of religion entirely - the whole 'Endless Forms Most beautiful' Album, lyrically, is a kind of celebration of life itself and the secular, evolutionary history of the planet. It sounds like you should just go out and buy all the albums, I promise it would be money very well spent! :) I think if you liked this one, it might be time for you to check out 'Greatest Show on Earth' at Tampere - its not angry, but a 24 minute epic about the entire evolutionary history of the planet, starting with the big bang onwards, its pretty special :) I would also say that Yours Is An Empty hope is another one, but Im not sure if you did that on the previous channel??

Normally Marko is having two instruments, both Warwick. Bass and then this double neck bass + guitar. Depends song, he change instrument. So in this 2015 concerts you can see him using both instruments.

Great reaction. Good to see you so stoked over the performance! There is a version of this performance on KZread that has the lyrics too! Your instinct about the song was correct. This is from their last studio album, and Floor's first, "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" which was influenced by the books of Evolutionary Biologist and renowned Atheist Prof. Richard Dawkins. It's him narrating at the beginning of the song. He narrates on a few songs throughout the album. Mainly on the song "The Greatest Show On Earth". A song about the formation of the Universe, our Solar System, Earth, the evolution of Life on Earth and probably Humans' demise by our own stupidity. There is also a new album being released 10th April 2020 entitled "Human. :II: Nature." A double album at that!

Reacting to your comment at 9:00 - yes, Tuomas does this a lot in NIGHTWISH songs. The exploding rhythm on the keyboards is in fact one of NIGHTWISH's "trademarks". You can trace it back to their earliest songs, making appearance in various guises and contexts, but invariably giving that uplifting sense of power!

Steven, glad to see you back! About the bassist. You need to hear him as lead singer. There are a few Nightwish songs where he's the lead/only singer, and also his solo stuff. As all of the NW fans can confirm, he can hold his own. He's actually one hell of a singer! I'll always prefer Floor, but Marko comes at a close second. Some stuff for you to check him out: With Nightwish -The Islander - Live Tampere -While Your Lips Are Still Red - Live Wembley -High Hopes - Live End of an Era -Master Passion Greed - Dark Passion Play album Solo -Isani aani - "Mustan Sydämen Rovio" album -Stones - Pyre of the Black Heart album (english version of the album above, but different song) Tarot -Tides - Live "Undead Indeed" -Wings of Darkness - Official Music Video Have at it at your discretion! :)

For those who criticized you in the previous video, do not give them much importance, they did not see your reactions to previous NW, I saw them, and they were more than right. You are right on with this song. They are making a comment on organized religion. I think most of the members seem to lean towards spirituality without the need for strict dogma. This song may have been inspired by the recent worldwide church scandal involving so many young boys. Hypocrisy, deceit, and the worst sin imaginable organized from within is hard to stomach! It is great to see you back and rocking hard. Love the way you break it down and you obviously understand music and composition. Do you play? Hope your doing better. See you next time. These stories given to us all Are filled with sacrifice and robes of lust Dissonant choirs and downcast eyes Selfhood of a condescending ape Behold the crown of a heavenly spy Forged in blood of those who defy Kiss the ring, praise and sing He loves you dwelling in fear and sin Fear is a choice you embrace

Floor sings hard-rock-christmas version of O Holy Night?!?!?!? In FINNISH??!?!?!? Yes.... The song's subject is broader than just religion. Marxism, Leninism, Maoism are just a few that would fall under definition of "male necrocracy" (had to look that one up), a government that operates under rules of a dead former leader. I assume Tuomas is using the word to describe major religions as well. This whole record is much more outward looking that before. Before, the only song that comes to mind that was about outside non-fantasy world was Kinslayer, which turned out to be about Columbine (just found out recently).

Glad you're back, bro. Hope you get some (posi) traction. Imma try to get this is while you're channel is too small, because I really want to make some important points about how Nightwish is the inheritor of a lost legacy from the 60s and 70's. Let me start with the Jefferson Airplane... Grace Slick is the archetype that Floor's stage character is built on. In fact she is the archetype that *every* female Metal frontwoman's character is built on, because this brand of PsychRock is where Metal COMES FROM, beginning about a year after this was shot with Sabbath and Led Zep. This band also has a similar male/female vocal dynamic, and a Finnish guitar player (Jorma Kaukonen). kzread.info/dash/bejne/lauOpJWaicmnmtI.html . Remember, there was literally no Metal yet in 1968. kzread.info/dash/bejne/eWh61siTYbrbhKQ.html I'm going to post some other influences from the Psych/Prog tradition that Nightwish carries on on another day.

And yes, this song is anti-organized religion. Their song 'The Greatest Show on Earth' is also about the evolution of the world, where they talk about 'the god of gaps'. They even have Richard Dawkins come out on stage in the Wembly version.

Its talking about Thomas's suicide after he kicked Tarja out of the band because he got blamed by every media. He did the suicide on the song and the song was so dark. I think u may relate to it.

Ypu mean The Poet And The Pendulum? That was his lyrical suicide. Edit: And I don't think the whole album can be seen as a suicide anyway. Hate/anger -album, pretty much yes.
