​@@markfrancis6886 The UK does have some female fronted symphonic metal bands, but they seem to be almost exclusively devoid of airplay at home. Not that that is a unique problem - the Dutch were blissfully unaware of Floor until BZ, and Simone didn't get the break out Floor did, when Ms Simons did the Belgian version of BZ, 'Liefde Van Muziek,' in 2018 (Performances are on KZread)

Simone and Floor are best friends and you can clearly see the love and companionship they share during this wonderful performance.

That whole Epica anniversary concert was awesome.

In Floor's case, she wanted to be in a metal band, and the classical training came later. She's a metalhead first and foremost and has stated that classical singing is not really her cup of tea.

Floor and Simone have been close friends for years. So yes they do know each other very well. If you are interested at what Epica sounded when they just started take a look at a live recording in a studio for a Dutch tv show when they had just released their debut album . I know Floor as a teen loved the metal scene but didn't want to sing/grunt like a lot of metal vocalists were doing. Then she discovered The Gathering and she wanted to sing just like Anneke van Giersbergen from The Gathering. Floor went to the Rock Academy in Tilburg.

Floor always wanted to be "metal," but as a teenager having already begun singing in a band she wanted to gain mastery of her voice. She had as inspiration the likes of the amazing Dutch progressive metal vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen. She started school learning classical singing but after a little over a year, switched to a musical theatre focus. Erm, Floor is and has been metal from start: she was in the first class of the first rock academy in Holland where she didn't find what she was looking for vocally until they had a workshop given by a teacher from conservatory, she then took lessons with him. She finished the rock academy and then studied musical theatre and opera. She calls herself a voice geek and will learn anything to enhance her abilities. Btw, her first band was the symphonic metal band After Forever, she joined when she was 16 in 1997. That was not good.

The connection of metal with classical music is deep and longstanding. For male metal singers that can sing opera despite a lack of formal training, see Fabio Lione, Eric Adams and Ronnie Dio.

Simone is about 5'6 (~168 centimeters) and Floor is about 6' (~183 centimeters)

I came for the Floor but I JUST started getting into Epica and can't believe how good they are (and that I've not checked them out sooner). So any reactions you do on Epica I will be here for and probably discovering at the same time.

Simone was inspired to this direction by Tarja of Nightwish (amongst others)

I just cannot get enough of this performance, part of it is the song itself, but the way they simone and floor go together on stage is just epic. Love seeing live performances where you can see the performers enjoying themselves.

Greetings ! This show was their 10 years anniversary show, that's why they have an orcherstra and a choir behind them. They usually use backing tracks on "regular" shows (not that it's a bad thing, just clearing it up). Interesting to note that Simone was pregnant (3-4 months deep I believe) during this concert ! If I may recommend Chasing The Dragon from that same concert (Retrospect). Cheers !

Two best friends who do these duets often and other projects away from their bands. They sounded like battle angels... that I agree with 100%. While they were angelic you do get that don't you mess with me feel from that power display. Excellent reaction and analysis. Floor has been in metal bands since she was a teenager and Simone was inspired to go into metal by Tarja (Nightwish's 1st vocalist who was a pure trained operatic vocalist). They did a pure aria earlier in the show Stabat Mater Dolorosa (kzread.info/dash/bejne/oJyosbGLibetqJs.html) that was just as beautiful.

Yas! Been waiting for you to do this one. In regards to if they knew they wanted to do this kind of music yes both of them grew up listening to the rockier side of things. Simone in fact changed from Pop training to Classical upon hearing the Nightwish Album Oceanborn (Tarja era) and joined Epica at 17. Floor meanwhile joined After Forever at 16; most of her significant formal training came later joining the Dutch Rock Academy two years after becoming a member of After Forever. At 21 she joined the Conservatorium Tilburg.

@@SSTVocalCoach It is either Poet and the Pendulum or Stargazers if I had to guess. Those two are the ones that give you trouble. Some other people used a part of each song . So that is what started that copyright battle. Stargazers forget it. PandP has gotten through in some cases. Great reaction to the beautiful singers. Actually Floor was also a voice teacher. She helped Simone with some things. Take care.......... :-)

Hi, Floor started with metal, her first band was After Forever (dutch symphonic metal band, one of the members later formed Epica), she joined them when she was 16 in 1997 till 2009.

That was a solid analysis, thank you. You are the first one to point out the mirroring that is going on between Floor and Simone and the way they reverse their parts in the first part. Other reactors either don’t mention it or they don’t notice it. So: well done! To answer your question: no, Floor wanted to be a metal singer first. And then she turned out to have this great soprano voice that could do classical singing. Since that became an important part of her band’s sound she wanted to be trained in it. So she sought for education because, as she has said herself: she sang opera style but she did not really know what she was doing. That was the reason for her to seek for proper education. As for Simone I’m not quite sure. She was already taking singing lessons when she joined Epica. But I’m not sure whether she was already aiming to become a metal singer at the time.

Simone was training to be a pop singer, then she heard Nightwish's Oceanborn album and decided she wanted to do that. So she switched to classical training.

During the same Epica concert "Retrospect" Simone Simons sang another duet with Floor Jansen called Stabat Mater Dolorosa, a classical piece by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi. You should really check it out. I think you will appreciate the music.

Floor and Simone lived together when they studied music. They are good friends. The one that screams shout out to Floor is Floor's former memberband. They are all from Holland. Dutchies are the tallest people on earth ;)

Try out "Dead Boy's Poem" by Nightwish, the Buenos Aires 2018 performance. This is an extremely underrated song and performance for some reason. And it is also extremely powerful and emotional. After Forever was also much heavier than Nightwish (which makes sense since the fouder of Epica was one of the original members of AF).

Drive-by comment. But when you tried to explain away the Disney tunes (well written things made to embed in your brain) I had to. Tuomas, the genius behind Nightwish songs, is inspired by Disney among other things. He has a "Soundtrack" to a movie Disney needs to make, inspired by Scrooge McDuck graphic novels( here's the "single": kzread.info/dash/bejne/fIurtbiIn5ixj84.html his wife singing the main part). Also he refers to characters from Disney films though also literary, Peter Pan and Captain Nemo in NW songs got planted by the Disney films. also add my dittos to the Sabat Mater Delorosa requests, and the Within Temptation Somewhere.
