Thanks for the links, I need to read up more. My current project has a short flex PCB interfacing a laser driver IC to a low power laser diode (TOSA). Data rates are up to 11.88 Gbps, and the TI datasheet recommended 50-ohm diff pairs to connect the laser. Interesting not from my fabricator was "ENIG finish only because it's so thin." I think it would be interesting to see a 2- or 4-layer stackup example in Altium with coverlay, polyamide, etc. setup accurately. What does the "is flex" checkbox enable in Altium layer stack manager? Does the adhesive behave similarly to dielectric (loss)? How accurate will the impedance calculator be if my Dk values are ballpark?

    1. The "is flex" option defines a specific sub-stackup as a flexible layer stack. If you're using the newest version you can implement different rigid or flex regions in the Rigid/Flex (Advanced) area in the Layer Stack Manager. 2. I do not have all the properties for different polyimides memorized, but the loss tangent values for polyimides are similar order of magnitude as FR4 materials. 3. The solver is going to use the Dk value that you provide, it does not "know" if that value is right or wrong, it just uses that value in a numerical calculation. So if you provide a Dk value in the impedance tool, but that Dk value does not match the real Dk value of the material, then there will be some inaccuracy.

One of my takeaways of the video is how to pronounce polyimide.
