We had a flat coated retriever for 16 years. We got her to be a a companion to our 6 month old daughter. They were best friends, she was the best Nanny and tennis ball catcher. We have been without put a dog for 12 years since she passed and we still miss her daily. Would love another just can't afford the $2500 plus the breeders are charging. It is absolutely heart breaking.

I've had several dogs in my life, but my flat coat retriever Kayia (passed away 2 years ago) was the most awesome, loving and loyal dog ever. If you want an awesome dog, definitely consider getting one. Brain cancer was what she died of, as she developed seizures 2 years prior to her passing. She was extremely playful and loved her walks up until her last day. She lived to be about 12 and a half years. I adopted her from a rescue when she was approximately 7 years old from what the vet estimated her age to be. Best dog ever !!

Very nice portrait. Our liver Flattie is 12.5 years old now. My wife did field work with her. I did 8 years of Dog Dance before switching to Schutzhund for 1.5 further years. We're both now "retired", although we do still "practice" some of our old tricks, just for the fun of it. We both trained her using clicker training techniques paired with observational training (similar to Dr. Claudia Fugazza's "Do As I Do"). Especially with Schutzhund, because she loves to bite and tug, relying on intrinsic motivation worked better than classic clicker training. In her older age, she's a little stand-offish now towards dog she doesn't know - not aggressive, just disinterested. But she still LOVES all people of all ages. What she did find "difficult", especially as a younger dog, was the concept of "wait" or "not now". When she saw something she wanted, she wanted it now. This led to situations of frustration. With time, though and learning that neither of these situations mean "NO", but rather ... Wait (and you will get it later), she was able to learn some degree of "impulse control".

Our sweet boy, Harry, was big for the breed, 97 lbs healthy. He lived 12 years. He started having grand mal seizures (one a year) when he was 6. They were scary but we learned how to support him through them. (we never new what caused them). He developed a degenerative neuropathy at around 10 but With diet, acupuncture, swim therapy and much support from his humans, he did ok. He developed a couple of different cancers in the end. We lost him two years ago and miss him desperately. He was my Harry Berry baby. I would do it all again for him, he brought us more joy than I could ever express here. RIP my sweet buddy.

Though I’m glad she didn’t have her sisters and mother’s intelligence (big strong girl PLUS the power to open doors and stairgates and knowledge on how to use her cuteness to manipulate us? She’d have been a force of nature.

Our Flaty died of the usual a few Months ago age 10. Brilliant Dog always a Puppy. Very strong willed when young. Could hold three Tennis Balls in his mouth at once, and boy could he run. Our other Dog a Flatty X Goldie is a failed Guide Dog. Failed due to a skin problem that occured in advance training. It cleared up after a few Months and was due to the stress when training at Guide Dogs. Another wonderful Dog. Love another Flaty despite the Cancer issues but not paying Covid prices.

One of my doggos is part Flat Coated Retriever, part Dachshund (if you can believe it!). He looks exactly the same as a normal Flat Coated, same shape of head, same coat length and formation (his tail and elbows hair fan towards the back)..... but he has short short legs!! They are strong legs, just half the length of normal FCR. But it makes him so very adorable!! He is the most beautifulest dog in my eyes! :^)

That’s so funny, we have our liver flat coat now because of the Flatcoat Dachshund mix we had before. He was the only one in the litter that was tall and a brown brindle coat.He was 60 lbs where as my Flatcoat male is 85. We tried to find the same mix, so gave up and found a breeder. Our mix truly had the personality of the Flatcoat. They are the sweetest!
