FJ45 Landcruiser Restoration Episode 3 | Disc Brake Conversion | Part 2/2

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The restoration of my 1974 Toyota FJ45 restomod begins. This will be a frame off restoration right down to the last nut and bolt. This is the second episode in two part series where I convert from the original drum brakes to disc brakes that I sourced from a 60 Series Landcruiser. Although this conversion has been done by many, there is very little in the way of instructions on how to do it. It's almost like a closely guarded secret! Well here are all the details you will need. There are some traps and pitfalls especially with the early model FJ45 landcruisers. I work through each of the issues that you have to address in this two part mini-series.
Drop your comments and suggestions below as this will be a real learning journey for me having never done it before.
If you missed part 1 and you want to know the direction I am heading with this build, click on the link below.

Ahh I see, that makes sense. Your bike adventures sound awesome mate, well done for getting out there and pushing the boundaries! I actually have two tanks on the WR450, both of them Safari brand. The main tank holds 15.5 litres and there is a smaller one that mounts over the rear guard that is 5 litres. I use 1 litre per 10km so that gets me around 200km of range give or take. After 200km of riding I'm toast any way, so it works out just fine!

Hey Terry, great informative video. I’ve just about finished refurbishing all the components to convert my BJ40 front drums to discs. One thing I am still looking for a definitive answer on is the booster/master cylinder arrangement on these conversions. I have read that some of the 40 series booster master cylinder combinations can be used just by removing the front circuit residual pressure valve from the m/c. Other comments suggest a later 60 series booster m/c combination. Which way are you inclined to go. Cheers, Neil

Thanks for watching and for your kind words Neil, I really do appreciate it. I do not have a M/C yet so will be talking a little bit ahead of what I will actually do so please bear that in mind. I plan on using an 80 Series M/C. I have heard they work well and are a dime a dozen. I cannot confirm this however as I have not tried it yet. Rather than fitting a normal 80 series booster however, I will be using a hydroboost. It’s a hydraulic unit that runs off your power steering pump rather than vacuum like a normal booster. I reason I am using this is because my engine is supercharged and I would have to work around this somehow to ensure my vacuum is preserved. Also, I have one on my twin turbo 57 Chev and you nearly launch through the windscreen if you nail the brakes, these units are that good. Sorry I could not be of more help mate. Cheers.😎👍

The only problem with using loctite on the studs if you break them on the road you’ll have a world of trouble and you have done the shims wrong because not only do they set preload but centre the axle pull it apart and put the original ones back in and go from that

  • @JafffaAdventures

Great feedback mate, thanks for sharing. Yep, you’re dead right about the locktite. I’ve had these types setups on my 4WD’s for almost 30 years now and never broken a stud. Having said that, I know others that have so it’s certainly a risk but one I’m willing to take. Re the original shims, yep I actually did try them to start with, it was completely whacked. Who knows how many times they have been mucked around with over the decades. More than once, that’s for certain. Cheers😎👍
