Fixing The Terrible Catamaran Sugar Scoop

Ғылым және технология

The sugar scoops are stairs leading down to the water at the back of each pontoon. The North sugar scoop has had a chunk sawed off of the boat to make a spot for a boarding ladder.
Both sugar scoops were added-on to the boat after it left the factory. Many people have said that they represent the worst fiberglass work they have seen on any boat, and there a lot of sad boats in the yard.
In this video everything that was ready to fall off, got ground off, some fiberglass was laid over the top in an attempt to seal water leaks that had the flotation foam saturated with rainwater. Then gelcoat was rolled over the top of everything.

Turned out really nice! All the hours of sanding paid off! And good to learn, that tape can withstand the pressure of expanding foam. I wish I knew earlier - could have used it for a repair in my house. Will use it in the future. Thank you for this tip!

It rained enough here for the foam to harden. Normally it needs humidity in the air to make it harden. If you want to make a thick chunk of foam like this, some people embed thin strips of water soaked paper towel in foam every couple of inches. Watch several videos about making spray foam thick before trying to do thick gap filling like this. I watched the videos after spraying, but apparently all the rain made it harden anyway. Spray-foam insulation in houses occasionally goes sideways if they spray it too thick in one coat because it doesn't fully harden in the center. If possible, multiple thin coats works best for the wall insulating foam. They have wide fan spray nozzles for the wall insulating foam as well. The A-B floatation foam where you mix two liquids, seems to harden even when poured into large, enclosed areas. Thats about all I know about it that might be helpful.

Thank you for the additional information! I will keep this in mind for future repairs. Luckily I only had to fill a relatively small hole and just cut back the excess foam after hardening. All the best for your boat-project - I'll keep watching your videos.

Marshall told me about the spray-foam trick when I got the boat. Guess he figured I'd need it.

Thanks! Everything being done now, is stuff we were going to do together before cruising with the two boats (My Carver cabin cruiser, and Trevor's catamaran). I invited Jess to finish the southward cruise to the Florida keys and Bahamas once the boat is ready. It would be awesome if she would come on the restored catamaran.

That would be very cool good luck I was curious what size motor are you putting on that boat didn’t Trevor make his trip with only a 15hp on it.

The catamaran will get a 115 horsepower outboard. Not because I need 115 horsepower, but because it is the smallest of a class of motors that can turn a larger propeller. Ideally, I can go about 8 knots hull speed while turning 2,000 RPM and not burning much gas. I still have Trevor's 15 horse outboard which will be on its own bracket as a self-rescue motor if the big one won't start. @@mikegale9375

Thanks for asking. The Carver is a beautiful boat. I love the interior layout like a studio apartment. I put a solar panel shade roof over the upper deck and flybridge, enough for solar air conditioning. There was a couple of months of tests with the solar running everything to prove it worked. Solar runs the deep freeze, fridge and air conditioner 24/7 with enough extra for the occasional use of lights, microwave and coffee maker. Once I verified everything worked, the project was abandoned. The guys at Xcel marine store it and start the engines every six months. You can buy it cheap if you want it.
