Fixing Noisy Windshield Wipers!

Фильм және анимация

Ever had noisy windshield wipers that seem to scrape in one direction and not the other each wipe? This happened to me recently after cleaning my windshield thoroughly and installing new wiper blades. After a bit of suffering, I remembered an old trick I haven’t used in many years to fix the problem.
Note that the twist needed is actually very small, but the wiper arms are stout enough that they won’t twist easily. A little twist and check is the best approach.

Hi man, my town and Country has had this problem for years when my daughter was little. I had it checked by the dealer twice but not fixed. Now my daughter is 9 years old and she always teases this noise. I decided to fix myself! ! I guess it should be an angle problem but didn't know how. Your explanation is very possible, so I followed your instruction and fix the noise after one twist. I am a woman. I did it myself. Many thanks to your help!

After several years of hearing horrible wiper blade noises I finally figured out the issue with this video and fixed it by bending the metal wiper blade arm to make it flush and perpendicular to the windshield. Thank you :)

This was the only solution to wiper noise or irregular working, skipping etc. I did found out myself by logic..

  • @rdealy94550
    @rdealy94550 Жыл бұрын

Cool fix! The main cause of blade skipping, chattering is that wiper blades stop in a loaded position, having wiped the glass then stopped. In the loaded position heat and time change the angle of the blade especially in summer heat.. One of my cars has a lifted stopped position, reducing the load on the blade, preventing the chatter, extending the blade life. Solution, change the blades. Twisting the arm is a temporary fix, chatter will return after some time passes, and then new blades will not be properly aligned.

Funny I just saw another video where he said he figured out the cause of the noise and skipping also. Anyhow if you really take the time to really inspect the arms and blades i don't think anyone has to be an engineer to figure out the root cause. But I am sure glad you guys have put this issue that have frustrated motorist for decades on video for us to fix because that annoying sound of wipers skipping is truly annoying!! And now thanks to your videos I can finally fix mine and stop spending tens of dollars on new wipers!!

You demo with the piece of wood and paper was just excellent! Love this kind of explanations when you actually sees what's going on, instead of a lot of talking that probably just going to confuse people that mostly know how to fill up the gas. Just excellent! I guess a lot of cars here up north in Sweden has got their angles twisted because of frozen blades. I might add that before anyone do this they can start with just trying to change the blades or clean the window and blades first.

This make so much sense, thank you. So I found that when I blast the windscreen with the heater on full heat the noise begins to stop but after a while comes back as heater is turned off, so softening the blades with heat will work as this will allow the blade to flow rather than push against. Also this is a brand new car with brand new wipers could also be standard of blade.

Great tip! If we owned a Model X, I would be *very* tempted to try and bend the passenger side arm so the edge of the blade came in more, so that the driver's side arm clears the full path of the passenger side arm.

Before putting your wrenches on the painted wiper arm do this: put some easily removable masking tape where you plan to wrench it. THEN put duct tape over THAT tape. When you're done adjusting, pull off ALL the tape (and hopefully no paint).

After a year, my wipers began making some noise again. I looked at them carefully and found the edges were straight and not pitted. I bought a new set and compared the height of the new blades to the old ones, and they looked identical. I finally just swapped in the new blades, and the noise went away. Bottom line: wipers do age, and I suspect the old ones had just become a bit too brittle with exposure over a year's time. It's a good idea to change out windshield wiper blades annually.

Most people don't run into this problem, and that's another clue that the problem is due to small production variations in the mounting structure on the wiper blades. I'm about to get new wiper blades, and I'll report what happens.

The rubber get baked and doesn’t flip between forward and back stroke. Take the rubber blade out and fit it the other way around. Initially it will “scrape” on the back stroke. After about 15 mins it will fine

At 2:30, when your wipers are "parked", the blade is in that position for days until it rains again or unless you live in the Pacific North Wet. So they might take that shape as they get older and less pliable. The question I have is, why would a super stiff wiper arm need adjustment?

It can be blades that are not perpendicular to the screen. You are correct in your assumptions. But it can also be that the screen has so much drag on the glass that it also causes juddering. In this case polish your screen with car polish. And maybe smear coconut oil on the rubber blades. This makes the blade slide more easily over the glass

My blades work fine up to 60mph (UK) then the bottom half of the drivers blade vibrates each swipe. I'm going to slide out the blade and reverse it to see if it cures the problem. I feel the issue is caused by the blades always sitting in the rested position at the bottom of the screen with the rubbers facing a little upwards, especially ones that have softened a little over time. My issue could be the high speed pushes the soft blade harder onto the screen and it has difficulty flipping over each stroke....

I think the thin film you see is a thin film of water. The thin film should disappear shortly after the wiper passes, but if air temperatures are low (say, < 50 deg F), the thin film won’t evaporate fast enough and it persists longer. Try super-cleaning your windshield to get rid of any contamination that could be causing water to stick to the glass & create the thin film.

How old are the wipers? If they’re more than a year, consider replacing them. Otherwise, you could try wiping down the wiper blades with alcohol to clean off any contamina, and/or super-cleaning your windshield.

Doing this will in no way solve the CAUSE of the issue. Your wiper arms did not get bent out of proper alignment. The BLADES take on a "set" that causes the issue. You aren't addressing the cause in any way whatever by bending the arms. Issue will resurface... you bend again... it resurfaces... you bend again..... eventually you could have your arms bent into a corkscrew and the issue will resurface because the issue is not with the arms.
