This is bad advice and will only work well temporarily. WD40 is mostly made of petroleum distillates and oil. These 2 ingredients will accelerate the breakdown of any rubber product. Sure, applying it to wiper blades will remove caked up debris and lubricate them to slide easily over the glass windshield (even with no water present), but the rubber compound of the blade will degrade and crack quicker. You will be disappointed at the short lifespan of your wipers, especially if you paid $30+ for the pair. The best way to maintain your wiper blades is to apply soapy water with a scrounge pad to remove caked up debris then wipe a silicone lubricant on the blade with a cotton rag. Ironically, WD40 also makes a silicone lubricant in a spray can. Silicone won’t breakdown rubber like petroleum distillates and oil will.

I think the black stuff that comes off of the wiper blades is actually the graphite that the blades are initially coated with to keep them from skipping and squeaking. A better solution MIGHT be to clean the blades and then run a 9b graphite pencil along the edge of the blades. Wd40 would work temporarily but as someone else said, it will degrade the rubber and it won't last.

This will work for a short period, but eventually you need to replace the blades as the edges get rounded and will not act as a squeegee for removing the water from your windshield as designed. If there was actually a way to cut the blades back to expose a fresh squared edge then this would work better at rejuvenating the blades.

Rain X rocks!! I remember a situation recently where my wiper arm broke, but I had to get to my next destination. I stopped and purchased Rain X. Dried my window to the best of my ability and spread it liberally all over the windshield and left some of the residue on purpose. I proceeded to my destination, and the wind from driving literally kept my windshield very clear, enough to get where I was going without a problem. I'm not advocating people do this, but it really worked well. You can imagine how it works in conjunction with the wipers. BTW, I love WD 40, it has so many hidden uses that are truely amazing, good tip by the way. It's also a great hand cleaner in a pinch, just a quick tip from a mechanic. And I'm sure that last comment wiil trigger some people about skin cancer and heaven knows whatever else, but what these days isn't going to kill us. I'm 70 and still going strong inspite of all the things I shouldn't have done. I'll go when I'm good and ready.

By coincidence, I just had a 1" squamous carcinoma removed from my arm two days ago. The dermatologist explained it was certainly the result of cumulative sun exposure (I have always been lax about sun on my forearms) and never said a word about using WD-40.

Unless you spray it in your eyes, huff it, drink it, or spray near open flame, WD-40 is fairly innocuous stuff in normal use. Google WD-40 MSDS. Eating cookies and donuts on a regular basis is a greater health hazard.
