    Amazing to take on any project by himself but definitely worth some tips. Perhaps a better, more appropriate saw would help with this but there was way too much pressure being applied. Also cutting the wood at a slight vertical angle would help a great deal. I don't know who advised that kit, but they were very wrong.

    as someone who loves woodworking, watching you saw those planks with a small saw like that and on the ground no less was interesting to say the least. I respect the amount of work it mustve taken. but getting a workbench of sorts helps massively because your arms will be in a more relaxed position for sawing. and just in general, youre gonna need a bigger saw. one made for wood planks with bigger teeth. the one you had in this video is more for small thin pieces of wood and things like dowels and rods. sawing at an angle also helps reduce friction massively, instead of placing the saw straight on the block of wood, place it angled on the corner and start from there.

    I do a decent amount of carpentry, and fabricating work, and you did alright. Not alright for a noob, but actually alright. I have some concern the rockwool is going to slide down inside the panels since the walls are fabric and will stretch, so you may want to add some dowels for support. Also, a skil saw, and some cheap saw horses will make you life much easier (and all that costs less than a Wish GPU that is not a 450).

    It's also not that expensive to just buy a saw. You can buy brand new miter saws for like $150 or circular saws for about $50. Less if you hunt around Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. In my local area, $100 or less gets you your choice of miter saws. Either tool would have made his life so much easier. Given his general lack of proficiency with tools, I would recommend the miter saw - easier to not get hurt with that. Given that he spent $21 on that miter box with saw, a bit more for an actually useful tool seems like a good investment.

    As an acoustics engineer, I really enjoyed watching, and I can tell you that having free standing panels like that is a great solution 👍 but yeah some carpet is a good idea, the reflections between a hard floor and a hard ceiling can be very annoying...

    I was wondering why free standing panels instead of just hanging them. Didn't know if there was any acoustic benefit to freestanding vs. hanging.

  • @tryllejens

    @tryllejens

    Ай бұрын

    @@Kelekona_808 The main thing in this case is that if they intend on trying to do a double wall, it is essential that the panels don't touch the walls, if they have any rigid connection, like screws, to the wall the isolation effect of the double wall is reduced greatly. Also, generally an absorber with an air gap behind it is a good construction. And lastly, with freestanding panels, you can move them around as you want, which could help you reduce specific frequencies, as the distance from the wall has an influence on which frequencies they dampen the most. Or you can move them around to target specific acoustic problems, like standing waves between two rigid surfaces

    A few notes: Staples should be parallel to wood so they distribute the load over a wider area of fabric when you pull things tight. Canvas dropclothes (for painters) are a cheap solution for a big piece of tough fabric and can be painted easily. Fill material choices should be chosen based on the frequencies you're targeting. Including layering different materials for a wider range of effect. Multiple narrow panels are better than one large one since fabric-sag can be an issue over time (albeit a cosmetic one).

  • @lelluc
    @lellucАй бұрын

    you could add smaller panels diagonally in the corners to get a bit lower T60 since sound concentrates on corners, especially in the lower frequencies

  • @alecdonaldson6272

    @alecdonaldson6272

    Ай бұрын

    It's a good suggestion to add the corner traps, it just depends on the sounds you are making. If it's just vocal frequencies, the bass traps in the corners wouldn't be as effective as just covering more of the walls with some curtains (especially heavier curtain materials) and putting down some carpets. Those corner traps are helpful for wider frequency ranges (guitar amps in a studio, etc) but might be a bit more expensive than just curtains or rugs for the vocal reverberations that might be happening here as he records his videos. Blocking out the sound completely is going to be difficult without modifications to the rooms (floated walls and ceiling using resilient channel or something like green glue for suspending the drywall layers) and in some cases aren't really ever possible because of the construction of the walls, floor, and ceiling. The drywall of one floor or room touching the studs and then the drywall of the next floor or room makes those vibrations transfer really easily. If he's blasting really low frequencies from a subwoofer it may be next to impossible to block the transmission into the other units because those low frequencies travel through thin materials like drywall very easily. An extra panel of rockwool won't really stop a low bass frequency with a wavelength as long as a city bus.

  • @lelluc

    @lelluc

    Ай бұрын

    @@alecdonaldson6272 although true, when a wave hits the wall it's still at its maximum, this makes it easier for axial room modes to happen in the corners, even just having a simple diffuser to break up those modes can help immensely. Also yeah I forgot he's just going to speak so he probably won't need any expensive bass traps or resonators

    Jeff Geerling did make a room inside of his new office space for the best sound isolation as possible. He also has a train running outside which barely can be heard with all the isolation. His main issue is the AC fan being noisy. He did also hire an arkitekt to design it and had professionals setup the walls. I did also recommend he could use leftover rockwool to make his own sound dampening panels.

    1) Don't use pressure treated lumber for indoor projects. It may be different now, but I was always told it will leak the chemicals it's treated in. Which used to be things like formaldehyde and Arsenic. 2) Since your "walls" are not load bearing at all the only weight they have to support is their own. You could have used 1x3. 3) If you had used 1 x 3 it would have been a lot easier to cut with that miter box, which is really only meant for cutting things like trim.

    The big power tool secret is to check pawn shops. You can usually snag medium to high quality circular saws for 40-50% of their new price. You'll want to buy a new saw blade though, the blades on pawn shop saws are usually beat.

    Dawid you need to get yourself a cheap 10" or 12" miter saw next time and just use that with all the sawing you had to do. it would have made your cuts perfect and each cut would have taken literally a fraction of a second lol. I have a miter saw and I use it for cutting firewood for my smoker even lmao, once you have one you can get whatever kind of blades you want for it and cut basically anything, even metal with the right blade, and it flies right through because the 12" blade is moving at pretty insane speeds right at the sharp edge. I put a metal cutting blade on it once to cut some titanium tubing and it flew through it like literal butter, and this is 2mm wall thickness GR2 pipe we're talking about here, it's not super thick but it's still titanium of a substantial grade. That 1.5 meter length of tubing can hold up my entire body weight no problem without bending, and cutting it with a hacksaw would take much longer than cutting the wood you worked, but it did it like it wasn't even there. Power tools are amazing but also kind of scary sometimes lol, still ya gotta love em when you have em. If you don't overuse them, a good one will last you a lifetime too

    I used to work in one of Rockwools factories in Wales and touching the stuff with your skin isn't too bad these days, it's the older Rockwool that's itchy af. If you're going to do a lot of DIY, instead of struggling with a hand saw, invest in a circular/table saw. As you found out, hand sawing sucks, it's worth the 100-150 bucks investment. Good luck with the move....

    😂 I had to laugh at Dawid using the mitre box on the floor. For one, they have a lip on the bottom you are supposed to either clamp in the adjustable clamp bit of a workbench, or at least hang over the edge of the table / workbench you are on, this makes it flat and stops it moving. Also, how you do a sawing action when you are that much higher is funny! You'd need to be lying on the floor to saw like that, but the elbow doesn't move in that direction! 😂😂😂

    You can move those panels a little to the left or right and get very different acoustic results. All spaces are different, so give it a go before buying more material. Thanks for the video!!!

    If the goal is to help make your voice sound better in videos, it might go a long way (and be a lot cheaper) to cover the remaining walls with some curtains (especially heavy curtains) and the floors with some rugs. Those frequencies can be tamed with very thin materials and you don't need to spend a lot on rockwool insulation necessarily for that. You can also hang curtains on the ceiling but it's super annoying. Those panels will work great for the reflections that hit them, so maybe figure out where you want to be sitting or standing for the majority of your videos and then position them to block the surfaces that are most immediately close to your voice. The other walls that are further away may be just getting reflections off of those closer walls anyway. I often suggest going to FabricLand before Rona when dealing with some yucky vocal reverberations. Tends to go a long way and be cheaper.

    Those are quite impressive panels. I don't know much about accoustics, but I believe that flat, parallel, and 90 degree objects are bad for accoustics. Furniture will probably help more than anything. Maybe hanging some "sheets" from the ceiling in your recording space will also help and be easy to install, move, or store when not in use.

    Dawid... For next time... If you take the wood out of the jig once you have a groove, it's way easier. Also try to cut diagonally / work the groove around the wood.

    Dawid, I feel for you, having to go all the way back to the hardware store because you forgot one thing. Happens every time. If you don't want to rent power tools, I recommend buying a 22 or 24 inch hand saw. Get the 2 by 4 off the ground on a table or a couple of saw horses so you can cut comfortably without having to kneel on the floor. GL

    Buys a mitre saw, designed to cut mitres for a frame (intended use and would’ve looked way better), proceeds to cut 90s and still gets them skewed 😂 good job though, I’m impressed you stuck with that saw lol, thought you’d go out and by a cheap drop saw.
