You need the center wedge (metal ring looking thing) in the middle to actually tighten the head to the handle

I'm pretty sure the wedge of wood he hammered in at the end does the same job as the center wedge, right?

Circular wedges suck. Every axe and hammer I’ve ever used (I’ve used a lot) don’t hold up with a ring wedge. In my experience when I handle hammers It’s best to have a hickory or ash handle and a walnut wedge, and sometimes a steel wedge (small and shaped differently) is necessary.

I fixed my lump hammer by just knocking in a couple of nails in the top to re-tighten....

You should rename the video to, "How to send your Hammer 🔨 Head Flying Towards Someone's Head" This is exactly what not to do, plus you fail to place the most important thing that ensures the Head stays in it's place. its a very cheap part that costs about ¢ 0.69 its called a "Conical Wedge"

With this hammer the handle hole is tapered the handle goes into the small end and comes out the big end so even if loose you can't pull the head off old handle must be cut and driven out the big end of the hole When I say comes out supposed to be driven in and come out the top until the handle fills the hole completely then excess cut off
