Nicely filmed, edited and something I can relate to. Nothing more satisfying than to take an old tool and return it to servicability.

I agree, there’s a lot of videos that focus on ‘restoring’ an old tool back to show room quality finishes. There’s something to be said for just maintaining and prolonging the life of a tool, letting a workhorse do what it does best, work.

Love this kind of video, very therapeutic and good to know I'm not the only one who has things waiting on to do lists! Thanks Jon, enjoyed it.

Thanks Mike! Appreciate it
Don't take this the wrong way! But you are a fkn genius! That was super understandable and well done! You made it look easy! 💯 Excellent video!!!
Just replaced my wheelbarrow tire this Spring with a new solid tire. No more annoying flats for me. Next up, a new handle for the splitting maul that I soak in a bucket of water because it’s loose... Thanks for reminding me Jon!
Good job ! Relaxed me . thanks
FYI, discussion on AvE's channel about soaking the head for a couple of days to make the wood swell up also.
You're right! Very relaxing watching someone else do it. ; ) Enjoyed it Jon.

Very satisfying and straightforward.
Good as new! Great video Jon!
When we had broken handles, we just threw the head in a fire to burn out the broken piece. It was a lot easier than trying to dig it out. Still a nice video though.

Good job, great to see tools being fixed rather then replaced. thanks
Nice video! Thanks
It must be nice to have all the tools
Nice video, I put the head into a bucket of water for a couple of days to expand the wood a bit, I use 21lb and 10lb short shafted hammers in fabrication, they get a lot of stick
Nice work
I think you put those will Axel brackets on backwards there Jethro
Really enjoyed the video, and yes it is oddly satisfying making simple repairs around the house that take little effort.
Thank you for sharing the things that normally don’t get any attention. I know you learned your trade working in a cabinet shop, so I am hoping you might take a few moments to watch Engles coach Shop in Joliet, MT. Dave Engles is a wheelwright and been doing this for over 40 years. He is an incredible Woodworker/blacksmith/upholsterer and his down to earth presentation is a trip back in time. Your children see what you create and are impressed with your abilities and creativity. I believe they would also appreciate this slice of history of how the West was built, equipped and maintained. I sincerely hope you visit his channel and just sit back and be impressed. Thanks for all you do, Jon.

Thanks Ron, I will definitely check it out, thanks for the heads up.
I like your videos John. Your art shows a little in all of them I guess. I gotta say though that wranglerstar only considers that tool half finished. Those store bought handles are good but they're not done yet. Thanks for the vids.
Interesting Video, I got a 20 Pound Sledge Hammer with a busted handle & a Steel Ring in the center of the top of the handle for the hammer head, I was wondering how to remove the old handle, with that Steel ring in it & without damaging anything, gonna need that ring also.
You mean you can repair those lol. Like you Ive been doing that every spring for many years. Start off the season with good working tools and the work seems easier. Can’t tell you how many tools Ive seen at the dump that could have and should have been repaired. Thanks for another great video.
Lol watching you do honey do's for some reason was actually enjoyable, thank you!
Great video! I replaced my broken wheelbarrow handle with a 2x4. It looks so funny, but it works pretty good.
I’ve found that varnish on wooden handles will eat your hands up. I always remove the varnish and apply boiled linseed oil
Nice video, as always. I was told by an old timer at the hardware store I used to work at that the easiest way to get the wood out of the old sledgehammer head is to drop the whole thing into a campfire and then pick it out the following day.

You have to build a fire for that.
I can't believe I'm discussing wheelbarrows Jon lol. Is that a foam tyre? I replaced mine with a solid foam one, no more punctures!

Yes that’s what I did, solid flat less
What's the oily stuff he puts on at the end? Wood glue?
Lol, laughed like hell when you grabbed a new tire and wheel....the easy way to fix it. Good video.
A typical day on the farm. Nicely done.
Nicely done Jon! 👍👊
Hello Jon, does your local hardware store sell these replacement handles or did you order online...if the latter, which site? Thanks

You're very welcome Jon! 😎
When I was young I was taught to put on the head and his lying it straight bang the base of the handle up and down. Gravity and its own weight will force the head on. Do the opposite with the tapered head of a pink-axe.
Which hole of the hammer head goes down on the handle big or small? I'm on a ball peen project.
Always put it a bucket of water for an hour or so

I have those exact two repairs on my list. Seems like I just replaced the wheelbarrow wheel last year. That Chinese rubber is something to be desired.

I’m using a solid wheel this time
Great "Saturday morning " projects Jon. Another John released a "repair not restore " video today too... funny how that is on You Tube. Jon, I was expecting a fade out and then fade in during the parts of the video you sped up .
I used to have a mom and pop hardware store and would put on the new handle for customers. I didn't taper the handle to fit. I would uniformly shave (on a bench grinder) to fit so that the thickness would be maximized.
Way cool...
That moment when you pulled the wood out of the hammer head.
Hi Jon, I have a slow leak in my wheelbarrow tire and I have had it in the water blow several times now but I cannot find where it is leaking from, I have changed the valve but still it goes down. I think I am going to have to bit the bullet and get a new inner tube.

you are a better man than I am--I would have just went out and bought a new one--I miss having you narrate your videos
And in this day and age nobody much does that anymore.....sigh.....

True, but those of us who do get hammer and axe heads dirt cheap now.
nice small socket set what make is it ?
Renewed in America.
Clamp the hammer head in a vice or clamp it down well. A drill bit through your fingers really REALLY HURTS. Shop safety first.
Very good video. Not so sure that I agree about the satisfaction in fixing old tools though. For me it is a necessary evil.
My only concern is the thickness of the wood between the head and handle from my experience that is the failure point on properly seated heads but yours is especially thin in that area
I noticed that when you’re hammering the new handle, you do it while holding the head off the ground. Why do that rather than resting the head on the wood and pounding the handle into it? Thanks!

adamkrezz I don't know the science behind it. It's weird how it works, but this way makes a tighter fit for some reason. Doing it the other way doesn't necessarily get a tight fit and could fly off as you are using it.
Was expecting you to remove the rust but okay
Wow, the left over wood in that sledge's head did not want to come out!
I would scrape or sand off the lacquer on the sledge handle and put some boiled linseed oil on it. Lacquer doesn't protect the wood and will rub blisters onto your hand

No wonder people are out of shape, if they use an electric tool for any little task that could be easily done with a manual one, file, hacksaw etc etc...

I still don't trust wooden handles. I know they give you heads up, but,..😢 I am a complete, no good for nothing, no one loves me, a fool. 😫 I love harborfreights mommy.

I mean what you did 'worked'....but it was a seriously terrible hafting. Not something you would do more than once every few years. Don't cut the excess before putting in wedge 🤦♂️. Drawknife....not flap disc. Seat heavy hammer right down on shoulder, thats what its for. Don't split all the wood within the eye with extra metal wedge. I mean, you got it done but that's kinda like me making hairdressing video. Ill cut off the hair bit it aint pretty.
