Five Law School Don'ts

Hi everyone---it's been a little while but I'm happy to be back, and hope to produce some great law-school related content for you this year. I really can't believe how quickly the time has passed. I'm about to enter my third and final year here at Stanford Law, so this video includes advice wrung from the blood, sweat, and tears of my first two years as a law student. Here you have it: five things you definitely shouldn't do in law school (and one for my 0L, pre-law bbs out there).

When I was in law school, what I noticed was that the students who spoke like lawyers weren't necessarily the ones that got high grades at the end of the semester. The ones that got high grades were the ones that knew how to take the law they learned and apply it to a set of facts in a fact-pattern. So, to make a long story short, the quiet person in the back of the class might get a higher grade in the course than someone who is outspoken and sounds like lawyer.

I was the first in my entire family including cousins etc to finish year 10 let alone year 12. When I got accepted into a prestigious university for nursing I was sure they had me confused with someone else so much so that I rang the admissions to say they had sent it to the wrong person. 3 years of blood, sleepless nights and more tears than I could physically cry, I graduated. The first few years I went to work with the "Registered Nurse" badge and scrubs I felt like an impostor...like I didn't belong and it was only a matter of time before everyone figured it out that I was in the wrong place. Took me 10 years to let go of that feeling...

I'm struggling to find careers pertaining to social justice/social issues that are obtained via law school - does this mean another type of education should be sought instead? I'm encountering a lot of videos pertaining to working at firms - would like to hear what folks advise!

Social justice jobs with non-profits are very competitive & usually don't pay well. You might want to try to contact lawyers directly at those organizations, like the ACLU, Justice Center, Prisoners Legal Services, Innocence Project, etc. to see how they got their jobs & if they are satisfied with their careers. Best wishes!

I have a video on the general timeline (how I got into law school) and one on studying for the LSAT! In general I’d say talk to your career office and ask for the contact info of some alums who went to law school/are in the field now. That way you can talk to them about their work and their path.

Most people pay law school through loans. The range I’ve seen for law school is 250k-300k. That means you’ll spend plenty years paying for the loans you borrowed. The best way around this is to get scholarships from law school, this is done through having a good LSAT and a good gpa (mostly LSAT). You can work, it’s really hard and not recommended. Your summer internships allow you to make money and gain law experience though.

Yes, private law school tuition is now $60-70k a year, & that doesn't include rent, food, transportation, travel, & textbook costs. In my opinion, no one should go into over 100k in debt to go to law school, especially a lower-ranked private law school. The chances of that paying off is slim due to the saturated job market.

Just one thing I disagree here about being a lawyer. Not all lawyers need to be crazy about details. If you work with contracts which is boring for me, then, yes. If you are a litigator, then other qualities are important. Not everyone can has this catch of the court processes which are stressful and mind- and energy consuming. They require fast thinking, making decisions, a certain character, charisma, psychology in combination with legal knowledge and ability to speak. Simply all mentioned is a combination of a talent.

I think so, and I'm not even an immigrant! I was born in the USA but sometimes wondered if I didn't get an interview due to my foreign-sounding last name (plus I'm an attorney in North Carolina). If you have an accent, many employers don't like that either, but it also depends on where you want to practice. For example, in some places, if you can speak Spanish, that's a huge asset. Good luck!
