Ending Law School on a Sad and Unexpected Note

Some thoughts (live from my social isolation studio) on graduation being cancelled at Stanford, plus reflections on the best and worst parts of the law school experience. I can't believe I'm going to spend the rest of 3L locked away in a room, plugged into a Zoom conference call...

This graduating class deserved better, and it’s unfortunate that these things are out of our control. You’ve been a great source of inspiration to so many of us, and I’m sure your reward will be great. This was a wonderful reflection.

I just completed my doctorate. Probably like you, I purchased a cap and gown, ordered announcements, had family planning to come to town, etc. We will not have our hooding and commissioning nor graduation. I feel a sense of loss as graduation is a rite of passage. Yet, I am more than willing to make the sacrifice to save lives. Maybe later on we will get to have this precious ceremony. Blessings to you!

Being able to provide legal services to people who are in such precarious situations is the both the worst and best part of the job, it is motivating but frustrating to move at a snails pace with SSA and feel like you aren’t doing enough.

You know now that you speaking about it, and how it feels to have that one moment you looked foward to taken away from you...it got me thinking about my friends who are going through a similar experience as you. The University of Johannesburg(south africa) has also shut down all physical contact classes and well graduation too which would have commenced this month...I guess we just need to be there for each other and try to encourage each to see the best out of everything... On the other end of the spectrum I guess it will help those of us who will have that moment (I’m in my second year) to appreciate it. May you be safe in this challenging times with your husband, and remain encouraged and motivated. God bless

Yeah, the only reason why I attended law school graduation was for my wife and family. Personally, I was simply exhausted and done with the whole thing. For me, law school was a way to bolster my career as a cyber/information security professional, rather than becoming an attorney, which made it more difficult for me to really enjoy the rigor of the whole experience. At the end of the day, it was a means to an end.

I completely understand. I've been attending law school after work for the past four years. At one point, I even juggled classes, an internship and a 40 hour work week. It's definitely frustrating to end the last four years of struggling and hard work on this note. Even worse is that I feel guilty and selfish for being upset about it because it's such minor issue when considering the substantially larger issues in the current climate. Just know that you're not alone in feeling how you feel and it will all still be just as rewarding when you learn that you've passed the bar.

I went to law school in a whim, also. I just happened to get into the law school that I wanted, and my employer paid for most of it, so I was almost compelled to go just because I could not let such a good opportunity pass by. I was reluctant to go, I found the experience often tedious and somewhat boring, but in hindsight, I regret nothing. Sorry that you missed graduation. I didn’t actually go to my graduation ceremony, as I was actually working my day job at the time. Being sworn in as a lawyer by the Supreme Court of the state after passing the bar was more meaningful to me, as now I was a real lawyer.

I was suppose to graduate in may 15th and that has been postponed but we dont know if we will even graduate, one professors sent out an email stating our end grade will be an incomplete for not completing the total internship hours. Let me say that I busted my ass off and sacrificed so much to graduate up to this point. I'm taking 7 classes and also working full time and took on 120 hours of internship. My heart is in my throat and I feel gutted with this decision and fell into a deep depression, I know I shouldnt feel like this since people are sick but I felt my work and efforts are not noticed and it breaks my heart

Kat V I am sorry to hear this. It’s not fair what they are doing to you or your peers. However, the fact you did so much to get that far is truly amazing and it’s a shame your efforts are not recognized. Don’t worry. Things will turn around. Nothing is forever. You got this. Good luck 👍

Law school is already a hard journey in itself that not many people are wanting to seek any longer. We are still hanging by a string for graduation. I would be super bummed if it got cancelled just because I worked full time and did night time law school.

Study Study hi, I would recommend it if it something you are really interested. It’s a challenging journey but it’s doable. If it’s something you might have doubts about it, my biggest advice and this is something I did was take some time to either intern or work in a law office and get your feet wet so you get an idea of the type of law you may you want to practice or even in general if this is a career you want to even pursue. Hope this advice helps!

@@analili6955 thank you so much for your advice! I'm an Indian student, and I really want to practice in the US, for which I'll.need an LLM and JD. People tend to complain about the wild work hours, even if you're not in litigation. But I feel that every job field within the paygrade of a lawyer has wild work hours.. could you share your thoughts on this as well? Take IPR for example, is it possible to strike a work life balance in the US?

Right now i am in 10th grade. I have always dreamed about becoming a lawyer. I want to help people in some other way. You're a big insparation to me. I realllly want to study at England because law schools there are pretty great. But sometimes i get drowned in my toughts. I wanted to be a lawyer for so long...but i am not 100% sure. I do not know if being a lawyer is for me. The tought of a lawyer gives me shivers in a good way i get adrenaline. But i am a sensetive person so i dont know. How to know if being a lawyer for you?

The first point you raised about Law school being the type of institution that induces poor mental healthy etc. is one of the major reasons why I am really doubting whether I should attend. From what I’ve heard, that experience of being under tremendous workload while not getting gratification, is something that carries on for many attorneys throughout their careers. I have a full scholarship to a good state school, so if i decide to go, I won’t be in too much debt at least. But I’m still unsure if I’ll enjoy practicing law. I love philosophy and would love to pursue that but the job market for philosophy professors is awful. Basically, I have no idea what to do 😭

After watching many law students experience I think that law is not for me. Most of the people advice to go to a law school only if the person is passionate about becoming a lawyer. My grandma really wants me to be a lawyer but I don't think I will be able to be one. It is really difficult for me to handle this situation.
