My original fiskars is around 20 yrs old and has seen hard use. It’s sheath was the old snap in without the retention tab is now replaced with some old fire hose and a leather strap looking similar to their new sheaths design. My hatchet has literally saved lives and although I have a new one it’s hard not to carry it. I would like to try the N7 sometime just to see if it connects to my hand like the original. Thanks for the great review.

Love my Fiskars 36” Super Splitting Axe, 28” Splitting Axe, and my 14” Hatchet (the all black versions; w/o orange handles). They. Are. Indestructible. Been splitting wood by hand for my wood stove for the past three years using the Super Splitting Axe and boy howdy does it rip through oak. The hatchet and other axe are amazing for felling trees and limbing. With that said, there’s something about wooden-handled axes. I have been eyeing Gränsfors Bruk axes for some time but can’t afford yet. This might fill that gap perfectly.

I've been looking for a comparison review for the X7 and N7 for a while, so thank you. Fiskars axes are very popular over here in the UK, so as of Feb 2021, they hold their value and they're often out of stock - meaning that at the moment (if you can find them in stock from reputable sellers), the X7 is around £35-£40, and the N7 is around £55-70. The big reason for me to consider the N7 over the X7, was whether the steel was of better quality enough to be worth the extra £20-£40 rise in cost. I've never minded the X7 aesthetic (the orange is easily visible when out in the forest), so if the steel isn't any better, I'll go for the X7. Thanks again.

I just recently got two of the X series. One X5 to go on camping and motorcycle trips and one X10 to replace my grandfathers 150 year old in the motorhome. X series out of practicality. I'm getting another in the N series for the look and feel of wood. That one for using around the house. I'm retiring my grandfathers axe, it's going up on a wall instead. Lots of sentimental value.

I was dead set on getting one size up because it had a chopping head instead of the splitting head on the same length polymer one. So - around a 17 IN axe. I would have already bought that in the polymer if it had the head I wanted...the chopping head performs very well. THEN I saw the new Gerber Brushcraft ax coming out in the length I wanted with an interesting head...so that displaced the Fiskars I was about to buy. Also - excellent point about the price point and other options at that 100 dollar mark- that’s a big consideration.

Since the N10 and N12 are just a few bucks more than the N7, I found them to be a better value. And since I own an all black X7 as well as a classic orange/black X7 - which is redundant enough lol - those are the two I've purchased. I chose the N10 initially, but liked it so much I ordered an N12 for some light splitting. Now the N12 is now my go-to hatchet / camp axe (for light property maintenance and fireside). Keeping in mind a real Husqvarna forest axe, or Fiskars splitting maul, or comparable beast, will be needed for the serious tasks.

Wood is a living organic material. As such, it is susceptible to swelling, shrinkage, degradation, splitting, etc. That's why some folks go with the synthetic handled tools. I don't see the point of a hybrid axe handle design. If you like wooden handles, go wood all the way. Anyone who uses a hatchet or axe should have gained certain skills, one of which is how to use it without overstrikes that would damage the handle, so it stands to reason that it comes down to "old school wood or new age synthetic!!!

For 9 dollars more I’d pick up the N12 since there is no comparison in the standard line. Love the look of these

Personally i see N7's wood & plastic handle is just ready to structure failure. It' s still not possible to replace handle in garage workshop too. What was Fiskars even thinking?

i love carbon steel, but triple the price of X7 just doesnt bode well for most people. im still unsure why would they make hybrid (composite/wood) handle, while still having overmold head. just doesnt make much sense.

Hi Price are completely different now !only 20€ of difference. I just received the n7. I feel it a bit heavy ! I noticed the x7 is 100gr lighter. Does anyone tried both ?

I already have a few Gransfors Bruks axes/hatchets, but could (always ;)) do with another axe, especially a workhorse. I love the look of the N7 but the price is way too high, so I'm going for the X7 instead. Not going to spend 90 dollars on an axe edge that rolls on day 1. Thanks for the video :)!

$90 for a wood handle when I can get the same axe head for $30 with the composite. If they made a version with better steel that would justify the extra cost. Like GT stated you can get better quality steel with other brands with a wood handle. That is a tough sell at $90. Really feel Fiskars put out a wood handle version due to all the criticism from the hard care woodsmen. If you really like this version of the axe get one soon. If the sales numbers don't justify the manufacture of the wooden handle Fiskars will discontinue making it. The X7 is my go to camp axe. The cover + handle does an excellent job of protecting the blade edge when stored in our camp tote. I have leather covers for my other axes and they deteriorate very quickly. Looking to get custom kydex covers for all my axes.

My x7 is a constant companion with me in the woods. For a hickory handle hatchet I am going to look for something like a Council Tools Flying Fox (in keeping with my budget and price range.) Also, the bonded hickory handle gives me pause - I like, and trust, my beloved x7. I never worry about the handle.

To me, the point of a wood handle is so you can replace it in the outdoors. Theyve made it less reliable, and more expensive. But it looks cool, so it'll sell.(sad)

While I see what you're saying, the over strike portion should make it more durable than a full wood handle hatchet and give it more comfortable grip than the X7 but like Aaron said its what features are you willing to pay for.

The wood they have used, is much harder and tougher, than any wooden axe handle on the market. The overstrike, also makes it even tougher. The balance is very improved, the performance just a bit, because of the added weight. You get what you pay for.

Before I looked up the price I honestly thought it might be a $10 “upgrade”. At this price I would just go with a better hatchet with a wooden handle. In fact you can buy a very nice wooden handled hatchet for half the price.

Dang the pricing is steep in the U.S. In Finland it's going for 65 bucks vs the 35 bucks of the x7. I'm opting for the n7 just for the look.

So awesome, now I can get one of my favorite tools in a version that isn't balanced right, has enough wood in the handle to break and enough plastic so that it will be unfixable AND it sounds like it'll be basically 100$!!? Sounds like somebody feels like it's time for a paid vacation ..... your new tool might last 10 years or it might break when you really need it
