    I forget who said it, but sometimes censorship can make something funnier. Example: the Southpark movie was originally "Southpark, All Hell Breaks Loose" but they were told it was too much and somehow "bigger, longer, and uncut" was approved.

    By the way, yes, they did actually let them choose the names, which led to some hilarious moments (like the daughter being named "Dysentery" in some productions, creating confusion, or one where the daughter was named "Dad"...Think about how hard that one would have been to keep track of), or multiple shows where the daughter was named "Mistake" or "Accident", possibly by people who had seem the show before and knew the backstory vis-a-vis teen pregnancy, one of which had the son named "Adopted", and, in fact, they also made the audience choose who died each night in an actual, like, vote. In case you're wondering, the night the KZread version was filmed, the son was chosen (I guess he is named Craphole). However, they did NOT let them actually choose the method of death, they assume they will always pick Dysterny, and, to be fair...They're right. That said, as is usual with these types audience participation shows, they did have plants to provide fake names should any of the audience suggestions be unusable, usually by being distractingly offensive, combined with some stragetic mishearing (this may even have happened in the KZread version: Some people say that the audience suggestion for the son was "Crackwhore", and they used stragetic mishearing to make it "Craphole".) Also, this is the only Starkid show to show up off-Broadway, and, in that version, they rig the voting so that every family member will die (and, thus, get to sing the ending song) a roughly equal amount of times, since one major expense with this show was that they had to make everyone rehearse that song just in case, even though some of them ending up singing it rarely or almost never. It's also rumored that this production included a "secret" ending, one time only, where the OX dies, instead of any of the family, finally letting Joey Richter, the last remaining actor in the cast, do the song. Supposedly, this version also included letting the General Store Guy finish singing "When The World's At Stake", with the Ox's death scene including both him asking the family to give a letter to his estranged daughter, and him giving a dying declaration of love and tender kiss to...The Son. Which is weird, but is probaly to the nod to the fact Joey Richter and Lauren Lopez, who plays the son, are dating in real life.

    The amount of detailed references to the actual Oregon Trail game in this show is insane. It feels as much a passion project to me as Twisted, you can tell Jeff Blim put so much work into this. There's lots of big and little things, from everyone dying of dysentery to the ability to write what you want for people's names as well as on the tombstones (thus kids adding immature or dumb things like Tittymitty, Pepperoni and Cheese, etc), to the town of Independence where they make you go to the general store and offer wagon tongues, etc.

  • @ForeverDegenerate

    @ForeverDegenerate

    Well considering TTO was a Musical something like 5-7 years in the making, this was, most definitely a passion project for Jeff. It was originally a submission to a TV network for a competition to pitch a TV Show idea (or something like that). In fact, that's why Jeff had the reaction he did to the name Jack Bauer coming up. Jack Bauer (yes THAT Jack Bauer) was the original main character for the TV Show concept. Some time after that competition, Jeff got the idea to re-tool and re-write the concept as a play for University of Michigan's Basement Arts Program. But with Team Starkid practically taking over at the time, he never got his idea off the ground. Cut to 2013 and Nick Lang deciding that for Starkid's 2014 Season, he wanted to try going small with the production. So Jeff was like, "Well... since you'll only be taking a handful of the crew for Ani, can I use who isn't helping you to make TTO?" And Nick was like, "Sure. Go for it." And so Jeff Blim re-wrote TTO, yet again, this time to function as a musical. And he composed all the music on top of it.

    Also the reason for the simple set is because they were playing two shows at one time in that season because their Star Wars themed: Ani was playing too and they had to make it easy to switch between Ani's set and Oregon's sets. And another fun fact is the actors in the Ani show helped the Trail to Oregon while TTO actors helped with Ani. Ani has the band singing since TTO was the singing one.

    In the original trail to oregon, a charcater was called Jack Bauer which is why Jeff is so happy. The audience member actually said Crapwhore, they misheard/changed it. Gaylord wasn't used cause it was a previous show Every time I hear "you can go next door and see something professional" I remember that Ani was at the same time (not exactly cause Clark played for both) but like they would be on the same days and the actors weren't in both Jeff wasn't meant to forget There are a small cast because of Ani and its why the other one doesn't have any of these guys. Joey messed up once. "We're all friends hohohohohohohohohoho *Jeff laughs* OX LIKE ME!" Pecker in a cactus is a mamd reference. I think Corey was meant to say "Blood on your dick"

    Same! I like Starkid musicals so much better than the focus-grouped, workshopped, commercial Broadway products. It's so exciting watching an independent group trying new things, even if they don't always work. It seems like the lack of money and the small venues spurs them to be more creative, I love their miming of props! Most of all, the Langs and the whole Starkid collective seem determined to stay true to their vision and not "sell out".

    One of the big differences with this show was that it was a much smaller cast and much more hastily put together (though still a Jeff passion project) because at the same time the other half of starkid was putting on Ani the star wars musical which has a similar tone to this one. This one has better music and dancing but Ani is a more structured and solid production all together. Also Joe Walker (Voldemort) is in it. As for musical movies, honestly the 2010's Les Mis movie isn't worth it. I'm an actor and I cringe at the poor music quality and just... my god. Better to watch a bootleg copy of the Broadway version. Sweeney Todd is a good one, if you want to go old school, maybe Little Shop of Horrors?

    Just here to second... well, most of this, but I mainly came to bring up the Ani thing X'D They were staging Ani and Oregon in the same space (I can't remember the timings between the two though - did each show get a block, or was it alternating days...?), so because they were effectively doing two shows at once, both were a good deal more minimal in terms of costumes, staging, and even cast, though I think Joey did the most role-juggling out of the two productions...!
