I think the injection of humor is very effective when telling black stories because we tend to use humor to deal with tragedy. Especially african Americans

"I think it pisses God off when you walk by the color purple in a field and don't notice it." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Oprah Winfrey. Casting Notes Fact: Mistakenly reported as Whoopi Goldberg's debut. However her first movie was Citizen (1982). What Script Fact: At the dinner scene, Oprah Winfrey ad-libbed all her lines when she was talking to Whoopi Goldberg. After the scene, Goldberg walked over to Winfrey, gave her a hug, and told her that she has now become an actress. Emotion Over Experience Fact: Before production, Steven Spielberg felt very insecure about being director of the film. Spielberg felt that his knowledge of the deep South was inadequate and that the film should've been directed by someone who could've at least related to the struggles faced by many blacks living in the old south. Producer Quincy Jones then convinced Spielberg to take the role as director of the film, because of the excellent emotional E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) direction out of the alien character.

In the book, Shug and Celie became lovers for a time. They didn't make it so clear in the movie. All of the relationships were complicated and multilayered. It's one of the things I really appreciate in this story. But it's not so easy to portray on the screen.

They weren’t lovers in the book. Shug felt bad for Celie and wanted her to feel loved. It was a one time thing. Then Celie grew to love Shug because no one had ever cared about her feelings aside from Nettie.

Just thought you would like to know that Alice Walker’s novel “The Temple of My Familiar” is kinda/sorta a sequel to “The Color Purple” - One of the characters is the daughter of Olivia (and Celie’s grandchild), and she talks quite a lot about senior aged Celie & Shug!

Yeah I read that that was Steven Spielberg's one regret about making the movie is that he wished he could have done more with the Miss Celie and Shug Avery relationship in the movie. But had he done that, the movie would have been R-rated and they wanted to keep the PG-13 rating so that's why they didn't go all the way explaining their relationship in the movie

The very sad thing about this movie is the reality and relatability of it. Being born and raised in Louisiana, some of these things are just a generation before myself. Although the events in this film are dated as the early 1900s, this type of tragedy happened for many decades after that 😔

What a great movie! Whoppi was doing her one woman standup when she was asked to meet Spielberg. He had her do her show in his office for him.... He gave her the role as Ceily... She was nervous she wouldn't know how to bring her to life without ruining the movie. He told her just do what feels right. And let him worry about the rest.

Shug Avery was an alcoholic. That's what her problem was when she first came. It wasn't just that she was singing in clubs that made her father disappointed in her. That's why she was acting so mean when she first came. Once she got sober she started helping Ceelie. The comedy parts I think were added to soften it and make it more palatable. Thanks for the review ❤.

Ok now that I’ve reached the end of the review 🟣, as an African American male who grew up watching this many times on VHS as a kid (in the 80’s/90’s), I can agree with you that it does take some historical cultural knowledge to understand some of the deeper points of the movie. But I’d also point out that this movie was directed by Steven Spielberg and it was the first serious drama he’s ever really directed. Also, he was super uncomfortable about even directing this since he wasn’t deeply knowledgeable about the old US Deep South culture during that time period either, but he was encouraged to take thsi on by luminaries within the black community at the time. That probably accounts for some of the seemingly odd incongruous parts in terms of shifts in tone and seemingly mismatched musical scores. But also I assume you didn’t grow up in the US and you’d be completely forgiven for not knowing or even caring too much about a culture you’ve not had direct exposure to, so I hope that others are kind I their responses to you here. 6.8/10 is understandable given your stated struggles with the culture gap.
