To be fair, Romero said his movie had no zombies. He said his had ghouls and not zombies, because he had reanimated corpses that fed on human flesh. Zombies don't do that. Of course, we have changed that definition over the years, but he wasn't wrong about zombies not being the same thing.

I couldn’t agree more, the 1990 version is fantastic. The Barbara character is far better written, actually has a true character arc in the movie, and the actress towards the end gives the absolute best (IMHO) baleful outburst ever in a horror movie. I don’t know how many takes they had to do for her to get it, but it is so perfect for the situation, a combination of horror and hopelessness that was not over the top. And there are enough differences between it and this movie that you will still be surprised in places. It’s almost like they use your knowledge of this movie against you, in a good way. Kat, at some point you have to watch Dawn of the Dead. While this one started the whole thing, Dawn IMHO actually codified what we consider today as the “zombie tropes”. Heck, they were called ghouls in this movie, not even zombies, but Dawn will pretty much have every single zombie trope that you now take for granted in this genre. It’s also a great movie.

"Stop it! You're ignorant!" Best burn ever. 😁 Like the rest of the Romero "Dead" series, "Night" isn't about the zombies. It's about how people handle extreme stress. The movie does an incredible job conveying the sense of fear and claustrophobia, and the slow reveals of the nature of the zombies adds a sense of realism and builds the tension. If there really was an apocalypse (zombie or otherwise), the information would be communicated piecemeal, just as it is in real emergencies. All in all a masterpiece of ultra-low budget filmmaking.

Interesting fact: This was one of the last films released before the current ratings system took effect. At that time, B-grade horror movies were considered kiddie fare, as they were always corny and not really scary. Consequently this movie was screened at Saturday matinee showings to theaters full of children before theater managers realized what they had. Famous film critic Roger Ebert attended one of these, and wrote extensively in his review about how traumatized the children were by what they saw. He praised the film itself but also considered it an object lesson in why the new ratings system was needed.

The first modern zombie movie! In fact some of the basic zombie tropes had not been codified yet. Thus the walking corpses sometimes use tools and are only referred to as "ghouls." The movie had a lot of topical subtext and the situation the characters found themselves in was supposed to be easily survivable - if only the characters cooperated. The series went on to examine consumerism in "Dawn of the dead". and I thoroughly agree with everyone who recommended the 1990 Tom Savini remake of "Night." Great reaction, Kat!

I think they went with ghouls instead of zombies because they were eating the dead. A more ghoulish trait. Also, at the time, zombies had more of a Caribbean/Afrocentric association. The scene with the little girl being shot was shockingly original at the time. The idea of a black protagonist killing a white girl (even in self defense) was something audiences hadn't seen before.

It ended up grossing $30 million worldwide making it one of the most profitable film productions of that time. The blood that they used in the film was either chocolate syrup or red ink depending on the scene. The flesh the zombies were eating was meat got from a local butcher. Here's a fun fact, the term "Zombie" didn't come from Mr. Romero. He wanted his creatures to be known as Ghouls, because that's what they are lore wise. Zombies are the term known from Haitian Voodoo lore, but the name was known from a few other movies before that (Such as "White zombie" from 1936 with Bela Lugosi, and "King of the zombies" from 1941.) The press kept calling them "Zombies" however, and the name eventually stuck (though it annoyed Mr. Romero a great deal.)

Hiya Kat ☺️ This is an absolute classic! and such a bold movie for 1968 with Duane Jones in the lead role for this period of time in America and what a great job he does. He is widely credited as the first black actor in a horror film as the main character, so trail blazing stuff. There is a great use of inserted news clips and radio broadcasts to keep the audience informed as to why everything is happening and it’s a smart way to stretch the $125,000 budget for the movie without having to keep shifting locations which would have been expensive. I think shooting in black and white was awesome as it adds to the creep factor (and most likely it was cheaper) and the dialogue is tight, well acted and it feels more like a play. Those zombie effects still look good today and you can see George A. Romero was going to be a master of his craft with this, his first film which he produced independently as well. Big risks all round with this one and boy did it pay off. This is what l love about the horror genre, it pushes so many boundaries, can be so innovative in its story telling and taps into the social zeitgeist when required. Another fabulous reaction Kat and l look for ward to the next upload ☺️👍🏼

However the reason he got the role is not because he was black. From what my memory it was luck, decent actor at the right time and spot. There have been a lot of re writing of the actual why he was picked. But from my memory at convention panels with the actors, it really was luck. They needed another actor. And that makes it even more interesting. It was not a political or social commentary. That was already in the movie (the zombies themselves, news broadcast, the mob hunting and killing zombies, the last-minute rewrite of the ending) script Romero had written.

You're right Kat, some of them are real body parts. They got a load of cow bones and innards from a butcher. The arm that's being eaten actually belonged to the little girl who played Karen with some fake flesh glued on! There is a still where you can see her giggling as the zombie actor pretends to eat her arm.

Very poignant moment when our main hero gets shot and lumped in with the undead bodies. He gets mistaken as another "Ghoul" and the fact he's also a black man shot in the south by a white lynch mob is not lost on me.

He's the likable main character but I'm not sure I would call him a hero. Every decision he made resulted in people dieing and only survived to the end by doing what the arse hole wanted to do in the beginning. And for the record any social commentary was actually unintentional the part was written for a white actor Romero just hired the best actor he could afford.

So many of the common "rules" of zombies come from here. The bite spreading it, eating the recently killed, being stopped by destruction of the head/brains. Now you've seen the OG, you should go to the modern mastery of the genre, "Train to Busan" and have tissues ready.

Hi Kat, it gets even better with "Dawn of the Dead" (1978). And also "Day of the Dead" is pretty good too (this one is really gory compared to the first too). But Dawn of the Dead is likely still one of the best zombie movies ever made, and a must watch for any true horror fan. By the way, the remake they made of Dawn of the Dead (2004) was also very very good!

The nice thing about the radio is that it is essentially an exposition dump machine, but also logically tells the characters on what is happening outside of the house through the graveyard interaction that was set up at the start of the movie (but also hinted at off-screen, and seen with the multiple zombies gathering outside of the house), how to kill the zombies and where "sanctuaries" are, which helps both the storyline along and tells us everything we need to know regarding where the main character has to go/will go as soon as the credits roll. The downside to that, of course, is that the radio attracts both unwanted human but also zombie attention. This was way back then when simple horror storytelling told you SO MUCH without having to show everything. A lost art, unfortunately.

This is one of those rare horror movies i never showed my youngest daughters. The reason? I showed it to my oldest. At the time it was my son, and 2 daughters living with me. My ex took my youngest shopping. So i had my oldest daughter for an entire Saturday. I called it Zombie Saturday, and we watched no but zombies the whole day. That night when we were sleeping , my daughter woke me up and said "dad your snoring reminds me of the zombies." I didn't want to be waken up again, so i didn't show my other daughters any zombie movie other than "zombieland". That movie cracked them up

I always find it funny that, despite being one of the most beloved zombie movies of all time, very few movies try out these "smart" zombies again. They're resourceful, use tools, and attack weak points. Return of the Living Dead is my favorite zombie movie. Please check it out. That movie is where the trope of zombies going "braaaaains" stems from. Since zombies rarely talk in any film.

The first zombie movie was "White Zombie" from 1932. NOTLD, Night of the Living Dead is influenced by the "Last Man on Earth" movie. "Tombs of the Blind Dead" which is a trilogy from 1972, is pretty good as well. While the NOTLD movies arent typical trilogy movies, the story line does continue into "Dawn of the Dead." It takes place "the next day." But its actually many yrs later.
