In this movie I love how indistinguishable Ripley was from all the other characters in the very beginning, but through the course of the movie her actions demonstrate that she is, in fact, the main character.

A CHARACTER ARC! Somewhat missing in modern films, like Lea "Instant Force expert" Skywalker. I swear modern story writers haven't bothered to watch ANY classics that "do it right" because they already know "How to do it best"..... these kinds of mistakes reek of "age related arrogance".

@locust76 - True, and it is a movie when if anybody would actually listen to her at the beginning (you know: "don't open the doors" scene ...) - yeah, all of them would actually live to get to another day. Well maybe except the guy with "alien on his face", but that would actually be a acceptable death (in a way)... so we can later look at his body, and investigate it a bit more. Not just opsn the door and deal with issues after that. But based on the real life approach - it all sounds like some corpo would actually want that specific approach to happen, just simply wait for something like this to happen sooner or later, disregarding the life of employees... (no questions about it at all), or even a public sector company would do (I can imagine all of that too based on my work experience ;)). After all, the data gathered behind that approach could be worth some money (a lot in some cases), Anyway, a good feedback, and good response from "KatWatchesHorrorMovies" :)

Indeed. First time I watched as a kid, I thought Dallas was the main guy, simply because he was the captain. This is what O'Bannon was really good at. He also did something similar in Return of the Living Dead. Almost all characters in that movie had a well defined character arc.

One big difference for modern audiences going in is that they know Weaver was the star. Those who saw it on its release had never heard of her, and Scott does a lot to minimize her presence, having her lines spoken off screen and not putting Ripley in the more typically "heroic" mission exploring the planet.

Also, John Hurt's character is the first to wake up, and the camera lingers on him in the "Freezerino" chamber, making the audience think he will be the hero main character of the movie. Brilliant move, I can't think of any other movie who went to such lengths to misdirect the audience... :)

Probably the reason the underside of the facehugger made you feel hungry was because the director used things like oysters and muscles for it. He wanted it to have a fleshy realistic look. And as Ridley said "if you want it to look real then you can't beat the real thin". for instance, the inside of the egg was made of nottingham lace, AKA cows stomach lining. In fact most of the gore effects in this movie came out of a butchers shop.

Classic sci-fi horror. The tension is so thick, you will need a sharp steak knife in order to cut it. The voice of "Mother" is so iconic, in my honest opinion. There's something unnerving about a cold feminine voice counting down to your death. It wasn't until GLaDOS that we rediscovered that a computerized female voice can be absolutely creepy. Fun Fact: In H.R. Giger's original illustrations that inspired the look of the Alien, the creature had eyes. For the movie, Giger insisted that the creature have no eyes, thus giving the bleak appearance of a cold and emotionless beast that hunts by smell. Real Guts Fact: The dead facehugger that Ash autopsies was made using fresh shellfish, four oysters, and a sheep kidney to re-create the internal organs. Filming had to be done quickly because the organic material would go bad very fast under the studio lights. Bloody Solution Fact: It was conceptual artist Ron Cobb who came up with the idea that the Alien should bleed acid. This came about when Dan O'Bannon ran into a wall with the screenplay in how to handle the last half of the movie. He needed a good reason for why the crew members don't just shoot the thing and kill it but still not make it an indestructible monster that can't be killed. The acid blood was the idea that solved this problem.

The chestburster scene with the baby alien was pretty legendary. Scott did NOT tell the other actors what was about to happen. They had no idea John Hurt's chest was about to explode out a alien. Therefore, the actors' reactions you see in that scene are genuine. I think you even froze a frame of Ash's horrified face. Great stuff.

I was 8 yrs old when this was released and my mom knew I really wanted to see it so she told me that for her birthday she wanted me to buy tickets for us to go see this together.. Great movie!!!!!.. my mom also used to pile all 6 of us kids in the station wagon and go to the drive-in on Friday nights and watch all the great horror movies of the late 70s... my mom passed away this year at the age of 91... I will always treasure those moments ❤ thanks MOM 🙏

My dad made a point of lettings us know that it might be scary to us kids and we could leave early if we needed to. Ended up us kids getting dragged out of the theater after the chestburster scene because the movie scared the living shit out of my dad. Hiya Kat ☺️ Another classic in the bag and what a great film this is. You have to keep reminding yourself that it was made in 1979 and wow does it still hold up amazingly well today. The big thing for this movie back in the day wasn’t the effects (stunning though they where) but that a women actor was the hero, the survivor, a first really for a major as SCI-FI movie. I’ll throw some trivia your way. When the three of them first encounter the giant alien sitting in that chair in the spaceship they used child actors in the spacesuits to make that alien, the chair, and that set look even larger. Anyways Kat, loved this reaction. It was awesome and l look forward to your next upload☺️👌🏼

Trivia: The original name of the ship was called the "Snark" after the Lewis Carroll poem "The Hunting of the Snark," then changed to "Leviathan." After director Ridley Scott came on board, he changed it again (as he was a huge fan of author Joseph Conrad) and so the ship was finally called "Nostromo" after Conrad's 1904 novel.

  • @erikbjelke4411

The design changed a lot, too. It was originally supposed to be a very small ship, adding to the claustrophobic tension and the idea that there are very few places to try and get away from the Alien. Ridley Scott drew the massive ship, evoking a gothic cathedral or castle, or as SF Debris puts it "like a Star Destroyer knocked up Dracula's Castle." He wanted the ship to look like a Bad Place where Bad Things Happen right from the get-go. Funnily, they managed to achieve both, this huge imposing structure and tiny, enclosed, claustrophobic environment, since the actual Nostromo is a relatively tiny ship hauling the huge "gothic castle" structure.

17:35 "It's raining inside?" Well, it's not raining outside in space. "They have a terrible leak." Nope. This guy is the ship's mechanic. One of two mechanics. It's his job to fix leaks, not play in them. If this wasn't supposed to be here, he'd be worried and start trying to fix it. "At best that's space water, or worse, pee, or even worse, alien guts." I laughed out loud at that. I love your sense of humor. This dude knows this ship. He's a professional mechanic and THIS is his ship, it's what he has trained for. It's not "space water" (there's no such thing and if there is, it would be outside in space, not inside). It's not "pee" because he wouldn't be drinking it. Not to kink-shame or anything, but this guy is drinking it because he wanted a drink, not because he's being kinky. It's not "alien guts" because the ship's expert mechanic would stop and go "Hmmm, that nasty gooey stuff shouldn't be here!" instead of standing under it and drinking it. More likely, this refinery is refining stuff which generates heat. Heat is hard to get rid of in space. So this ship probably uses water as a coolant and pumps it through pipes to cool critical areas but also might use something like fire sprinklers to cool large surfaces. it's also cool that the writers probably thought of stuff like that too.

The acting is top notch - and both set and creature design rock. If you see the making off you'll notice that the Alien was "just" a guy in a suit - but the whole movie is shot as to show as little of this as possible, leaving a lot to your imagination, and THAT POS is especially good at making up even more terrible stuff than is there in the first place. :D Has one of the best plot twists in Film history so far (Bilbo Baggins being a robot!) and even with old style glass Bulb monitors the tech still looks totally believable to be on an actual spaceship in the future.

The actors were never told that John Hurts chest was rigged with a blood-pack, Veronica Cartwright's scream when it goes off as well as their reactions to it is as authentic as it get.

  • @erikbjelke4411

    @erikbjelke4411

"This is rumor control. Here are the facts." The cast did know what was going to happen, because it was described in a fair amount of detail in the script, and these were all professionals who read the script. However, no one knew what it was going to look like, since no one had ever attempted an effect like it before. They filmed up until they got John Hurt on the table, then "cut" was called and everyone but John Hurt was told to break for lunch, because he needed to be glued into the rig. Tom Skerritt elected to hang around and watch the effects team work, so he had a better grasp of what was going to happen than the rest of the cast, but even he wasn't certain exactly what was going to be done to achieve the effect. When the cast came back, they saw the crew all wearing raincoats, plastic bags over all the equipment, and buckets of (not fake, sourced from local butcher shops) blood all over the set, so they knew it was going to get messy. Veronica Cartwright was told "You'll get a little blood on you," but had the misfortune to stand right in the path of one of the hoses, which sprayed a fair amount of blood straight in her face, much of it in her eye. She stumbled back, fell backwards over a couch, but struggled back to her feet and continued the scene. Nevertheless, her cry of "Oh God!" is pretty genuine, since, you know, she'd just got something like a liter of blood sprayed in her face. There were a few small hiccups, the chestburster prop not tearing through the first few times, and some of those "bumps" are in the final cut. But the effect worked, worked beautifully (for a given value of "beautiful"), but because no one had ever done anything like it before, the cast were affected on the same level as the audience seeing it the first time. The chestburster scene is the only reason the film got made (that, and a little movie called "Star Wars" had just come out, and everyone was rushing for any spaceship script they happened to have on hand to get into production). There were definite flaws in the original script, some even calling it unbearably bad, but it had that "one great scene" that everyone loved, and knew if they could get the film up to the level of that scene, they'd really have something. So, no, "the cast didn't know what was going to happen" is categorically false, but there being some Enforced Method Acting in that scene is true. Basically, like all good myths, there's a kernel of truth the falsehoods take root on. The "Making Of" documentary on most DVD and Blu-Ray sets clears this up, with the actors talking extensively about the scene and thoroughly debunking this urban legend. Weaver herself actually quotes the script at one point, it was never withheld from the actors.

My new favorite reaction on your channel, Kat - thanks as always! There's a lot more Alien cinema to explore. Not saying it's all good, but still would love to see you watch it all. Also look into the Predator franchise, but please don't make us wait too long for this film's sequel, Aliens, by James Cameron. And be sure to watch the Directors Cut, which I wish you would have seen for Alien so you'd know what happened to Captain Dallas (hint: it ain't good...). Trivia? How about the blue mist that covers that cavern of eggs early on? That was a laser rig borrowed from The Who after seeing them in concert! The original title for the film was Starbeast, but after writer Dan O'Bannon introduced director Ridley Scott to the art of Swiss surrealist H. R. Giger and one of his paintings, Necronom IV, provided the initial rough design of the adult xenomorph, the title became the much more appropriate "Alien". Keep up the great work!

There could potentially be high humidity and a large amount of condensation as pipes of different temperatures are routed through there. It's a very large vessel, so there would be a vast network of coolant pipes leading everywhere, condensing water from the air. Or, the room could just be a great big dehumidifier, collecting excess atmospheric water from various areas of the ship.

it's the loading bay, people have theorized for a in movie explanation that it was exposed to the environment of LV-426, the "real world" answer is simply because Ridley wanted a water scene: "Ridley Scott wanted to have water in their, and didn't really feel like it needed an explanation. When he sold it to the producers, he said it was condensation from broken mechanisms. It's an old ship, with many quirks and faults, and that was one that the crew was willing to put up with before they fixed it in port." (taken from the dvd commentary track).

The fact that Sigourney read the part of Ripley and wowed everyone so they re wrote the character to be female just speaks to her as a performer!!

As I've heard, they originally wrote the script so that none of the characters were gender specific, giving casting much more flexibility. But no question as to Sigourney's superior acting and performance ❤🙌

Ripley was originally wrote as a male lead. It was stated in the commentary on the director’s cut dvd box set. Sigourney was cast because not only did she knock the character out of the park but at the time, a female lead in a horror film was almost unheard of and they wanted this film to really stand out. It’s a fascinating documentary because it explores everything from the very beginning from simple story concept to this huge production that just took off.

The First Chest Bursting scene was a surprise to all the actors accept the one on the table. Everyone's reaction in that scene. If you look at the girl saying awe god, you see here looking around OFF SET to make sure "Is this really what should be happening...".

I love the fact when you first introduced to the alien scene bursting from the chest the whole crew's faces where generally shocked because they never saw it until it popped out the director never told the actors what was going to happen.

It’s only right you do Aliens, the Alien sequel. It’s arguably better than the first. Fun fact about this one: during the chest bursted scene the crew new very little about what was about to happen. They new something would but they didn’t know what. Those reactions are genuine.

Not better.. different. Alien and Aliens are 2 very different genres. Lets just say Aliens is a must watch also. And I would even say to add Alien 3 as a curiosity watch even with all it's flaws.

In the book it goes into more details about them looking for the alien with a net. They discussed it and figured the alien would bleed acid like the facehugger; they had laser weapons on board, so they opted for the net. Actually if you watch some of the extended movie, you can see Kane holding one in his right hand as he checks out the egg.
