Maybe one of the all-time worst examples of critics getting it wrong. Funnily enough, the same thing nearly happened to Halloween until someone came along and pointed out the level of craft in that movie and then critics quickly reappraised it while it was still in theaters.

20:27 The Thing imitates you perfectly, even down to medical conditions. The guy had a heart problem. When the Thing copied him, it copied his heart problem and had a heart attack in a stressful situation. But it didn't understand what was happening because it doesn't understand human anatomy. Also, beware of people who tell you that Childs was The Thing because his breath isn't visible at the end. Not only can you see his breath (it's just difficult in that lighting), but a disguised Thing is shown to have visible breath in earlier scenes just like a normal human.

The special fx creator Rob Bottin said that the thing was inspired by a fever dream
The common theory is that Childs is a Thing and the reason that Macready laughs when Childs takes the drink was because the bottle was full of kerosene from all the molotovs they made, and so Childs being a thing just drinks it no problem, making Macready’s laugh kind of a sad, “Guess it was all for nothing” laugh. Also, I love that this movie established Macready’s nature in his first scene. When the chess computer beats him, he’d rather destroy it and his own source of entertainment than admit defeat, and he was willing to die to deny the Thing victory.

The Thing is one of my faovrite horror movies ever. The paranoia aspect, the practical effects, the thing itself. Such a fun movie. Great reaction!
As a longtime fan like myself, there's nothing more fun than watching first timers reacting to this classic. Also, about the ending, there's no real answer. People have debated who was a Thing and who wasn't for years and are nowhere near a possible answer. There's been theories like "MacReady gave Childs gas to drink" theory, as well as the "no breath" theory, and the "no light in eye" theory. Whenever anyone has asked Carpenter about it, he either wouldn't answer the question, or he would give conflicting information (basically trolling the audience). There are only three possible outcomes to this end: 1. Childs is a Thing and Mac is Human. 2. Mac is a Thing and Childs is Human. 3. (Which I prefer) Mac and Childs are both human but both die suspecting the other is a Thing.
@monarchisto
Жыл бұрын
I tried to figure it out for years too until I found an interview with Carpenter where he said he actually thought the ending was too obvious. If you thought the other guy was the thing then you would never accept a drink of whiskey from it. But if you WERE the Thing and wanted to build trust, you would accept. Ergo, Childs is The Thing.
@DanielS2001
Жыл бұрын
@@monarchisto Carpenter is a bit of a troll when it comes to people asking questions about The Thing. Even the design of the film itself is meant to be without solid answers, as it was his intention. For example, fans argued about whose shadow was on the wall in the shot of the Dog-Thing going into someone's room, with one thread at Outpost 31 breaking out into a heated debate as to if it was Palmer or Norris, with one fan using Photoshop to do an in-depth analysis on the shadow on the wall. The answer to the question is really simple: It's Dick Warlock (Kurt Russell's stunt double). Carpenter had him just sit in for the shadow for the scene because he didn't want to give the audience a clear indication of who's shadow it was. When it comes to those who became Things, with the exception of Bennings (because it happens on screen), you do not know how or when certain characters became Things, just as much as you don't know if Fuchs killed himself or if he was murdered by a Thing, or what exactly happened at the Norwegian camp when you first watch the film.

Or theyr'e both things. I don't think things automatically recognize each other. In any case, like Mac says they're both going to freeze in the near future and can't do anything about it. The flammable stuff is basically all gone too. Nothing either does is going to change the outcome, humans die and things get frozen again.

Yes you're right. I think Carpenter himself says he doesn't know. It's not the point of the film.
12:44 "What a lovely lovely voice" 21:35 Yeah but the guy who says "You gotta be fkn kiddin me" was ALSO The Thing and gave away his buddy. 22:20 I love how he says "We're gonna find out who's the thing" and the camera is pointing right at him. 32:10 There's no "Thing 2" but there is a prequel where you see what happened before. The majority of the effects are CGI though, noticeable CGI which takes you out of it, even though they had the physical effect geniuses behind the Alien movies working on it, whose effects were so good they scanned them to use in the CGI.
Involuntary IRL LOL when you said "Or... any... thing?"

There was a 50's movie version made of this story called "The Thing from Another World" - a good film in its own right (black & white), but because make-up effects weren't on the level of what could be done in the 80's (and Hollywood did not make such graphic films in the 50's), they had to modify how the alien functioned. :)

I keep telling myself that I watch too many disturbing film reactions..BUT, when I see the subject's (you) always say not to hurt the pup...then they see that first transformation 👏
Insightful comments I’ve read on reactions to this film I never noticed: Blare has a noose probably because he realized he was infected (most likely during the creature autopsy where he taps the body then taps his lip with the same pencil) but the thing stopped him. Childes is wearing a different coat in the end than he’s had during the whole film, his breath isn’t showing in the cold the way Kurt’s is and he willingly takes a drink from the bottle MacReady just drank from, something distrustful Childes would never do. So I think he’s a thing while Kurt is still human. A part that bothers me for it’s stupidity is Kurt blowing up the thing outside. Now there are dozens of chunks of little things for the rescue party to find in the spring.
I've watched a lot of the channel's videos and I am not sure I have ever seen her as engrossed, intense, or even downright frightened as she was here. I think the scream at the "blood jump" came from the bottom of Kat's soul.

During the film you can see Mac finishing his bottle of whiskey and later they make molotov coctails to burn down the camp. I believe that in the end Mac gives Childs a bottle of gasoline. Childs being the thing acts like he's drinking whiskey while Mac knows what was in the bottle. That's why he laughed at the end because he realized that the thing wasn't dead yet.

Just subscribed to this channel. The Thing is my favorite horror film of all time from a master filmmaker who had a very strong run of horror films for almost two decades starting with Halloween and ending with In the Mouth of Madness. Glad you enjoyed this one and certainly hope you watch more John Carpenter films in the near future!
"Mmh, my mouth's watering" I hear that so often in your reactions, I think it's time you saw The Greasy Strangler.
The Thing movie has such complexity it amazes people. For example: Windows goes to get some keys, leaving Bennings alone with the Thing under the canvas. When he returns, he sees 'it had ahold of him' and we hear some keys dropped. Shortly afterward, someone 'gets to the blood'. Yet the keys are in the leader's pocket. The leader is later proven to not be the Thing. Who dun it? We know that Fuchs realised that no-one should eat except out of cans, tells MacReady, is then drawn out, discovers MacReady's burned clothing, then is killed or kills himself, someone later puts MacReady's burned clothing in a different place where Nauls finds it, putting suspicion on MacReady who never passes on Fuch's warning, and at the end MacCready drinks from a bottle, passes it to Childs. He had a bottle of wine with him? Since when? How long was it since the explosion in the generator room? Who did the dog infect early on? The shadow's profile does not amtch any of the men in the camp, but it was probably the stoner guy, who shared ajoint with Childs early on, yet Childs isn't the Thing when tested. - and for me, this film is full of bits of the Thing that aren't burned, such as the exploded stoner-Thing spread all over the site. Any living thing that visits the site of the camp, at any time after 1982 date, means that it all starts again.
You've knocked another one out of the park, Kat. Fantastic. I feel like I'm betraying the other reactors I've been watching regularly up until I stumbled upon your channel this week, but you're quickly supplanting them all as my absolute favorite. It certainly helps that you're reacting to classics that are worthy of the time and effort, but I'm totally digging your unique quality and authenticity. HIGHLY entertaining. I'm loving it. Thank you for doing this. Keep up the great work! 🤩😎😃
One of the greatest movies ever made. Nothing more fun than introducing people to it for the first time.
To be fair, the Norwegian is trying to shoot at a small moving target while flying in a helicopter. Then there is the wind, the cold, the gloves, and arctic conditions. One would really have to be an expert marksman to hit a dog running erratically under those circumstances. The Thing is one of my all-time favorite horror films. I’m so glad you got to react to this masterpiece Kat. Much like Alien, the characters are isolated, far away from any help, and trapped in a claustrophobic environment with a predator that is capable of perfectly imitating any life form. It’s also a brilliant mystery as there are still theories as to where the Thing came from? What was the spaceship it was on? When was Blair and Palmer infected? Who destroyed the blood samples? What happened to Fuchs? And we’re either MacReady or Childs the Thing? If you are interested, The Thing (2011) serves as a prequel that focuses on the events at the Norwegian Camp. There is also The Thing (2002) which is a video game that follows the events of a US Army Special Forces team sent to investigate what happened at the US Outpost 31. The video game serves as a sequel to this film, and it’s in the survival-horror genre very much in a similar vein to Resident Evil.
I always find it pretty interesting when Childs tells Mack that he's a murderer. Lots of reactors agree with that statement, but Clark attacked him with a scalple. He's definitely not guilty of murder.
Friendly alien movies worth watching would be E.T. the extraterrestrial, Batteries Not Included or Cocoon. A few not so friendly alien movies would be They Live, Predator, Life, Event Horizon, Independence Day, Lifeforce. It's so awesome that you liked John Carpenter's films! Great reaction!

Ah Lifeforce: where Patrick Stewart plays a wheelchair-bound guy with psychic abilities. 15 years before the first X-Men movie.

@@69coolchris Well, he is tied to a chair, and he does have some types of psychic abilities while Space Girl is possessing him. It's close enough to be amusing, damn it!

The thing... A great classic. Please react to Jaws (1975), Child s play (1988) and Legion (2010).
“Or any…thing?”😂
They did a pretty good prequel, about why they were chasing the dog to begin with...
Your doing great!
i love how much of a freak she is " My mouth is watering is that weird" Yes... AHAHAHAH
This scared me so bad, and probably scarred me for life. But I keep re watching it. I felt wrong for laughing throughout your nervous stream of consciousness. I was in stitches. Love the content. Cheers!
Your reaction at 25:31 had me laughing 😅 “Oh, he’s so dead “. Very entertaining reaction. Thank you.

I second that. (1986 Cronenberg version)
if you want to see a space movie with friendly invaders heres two choices ET or District Nine 😊
5:32 "I thought it was an alien, but it was just the dog" - famous last words
I believe Blair got himself infected when he was explaining what it does. He touches the eraser of his pencil to the dog thing's body and then as he is explaining to the crew, mindlessly touches it to his bottom lip and from there it took him over slowly so right after his human consciousness gets the idea to remove the Thing's escape venues he then gets taken over while he is locked in the shed.
Love your reactions
"A space Movie about a friendly invader"... It's Called "ET, the extraterrestrial". hehehe Invite some friends that's never seen it before, and serve a bunch of Crab Legs as Snacks! hehehe If I were a Thing, I'd Leave Kat as she is... She's too adorable to take over!
The scene with the dogs still haunt me to this day. 😱
Fantastic movie. The special effects are incredible for it's time. And that paranoia....people going crazy because they don't know who's infected and who isn't. The book describes that in more detail. It's terrifying.
I love this John Carpenter classic.
Great video reaction !! So good. I watch it right now 😁 you are awesome and so beautiful. Grettings from México 😉
"This place has been deserted for a long time"while it's visibly still smouldering, and columns of smoke are rising.
I respect you going outside of your comfort zone and watching these movies.
No one & I mean no one does legit horror reactions like Kat. Keep doing you Kat & you'll be at 100K subs in no time 💯
Check out 'E.T.' and 'Starman' for a friendly alien change of pace. Not horror but two amazing classics and 'Starman' was also directed by John Carpenter.

Oh yes! Thank you Kat! This was the second Horror..., no, third horror movie I ever watched as a kid. First was Alien, then Halloween, then this. These all put me on to Stephen King and Dean R Koontz horror novelists. You are the best!
American Werewolf In London is a must watch also.Great reaction to one of my favorite films.
