I am so sad that this particular reaction is coming to an end soon. ATLA was my whole childhood (and part of the reason I fractured my elbow). I feel a lot of my morals and personal view of the world/people was developed by this show. This is what happens when kids shows treat kids as real thinking people, capable of understanding intense things, and when they don't understand it's such a pleasure to come back as an adult and understand so much more.

Zuko redirecting lightning at his father is one of the greatest moments of the series. It always reminds me of what he screams at the sky when he was trying to learn the technique: "You've always thrown everything you could at me. Well, I can take it, and now I can give it back!" Also, my personal headcanon for Iroh's escape is: Like Ozai was able to sense the eclipse underground, I imagine Iroh knew about it and was able to sense it within the prison cell. He blasts out seconds before, but by the time the guards got there, they'd lost their bending and he took them out hand-to-hand.

I wanted to leave a comment saying pretty much the same about Zukko facing his father, but you've already done it very well! So much great symbolism. He stands for himself, states things as they are (It was cruel, and it was wrong), and doesn't let his father control him anymore. Then, when Ozai uses the last card he has when everything else fails - that is, violence - Zukko isn't affected. He has accumulated a lot of experience, fighting for his life, being betrayed, learning things, and he became stronger from it. Not only is he not affected, but his father takes his own attack against himself. This is so freaking cool, and I hope this helped people figuring out when they were in abusive environments.

Last time Katara trusted Zuko, Aang died. He didn’t just get hurt, he died. He only got brought back because of the special spirit oasis water, which she probably remembers all too well how she almost wasted on Zuko. It’s a hard situation because as much as Zuko is genuine now, he was genuine back then too, but was still pulled back by Azula. Who’s to say he couldn’t change his mind again? As much as I love Zuko, I totally get Katara’s vehement feelings and threats.

Zuko is to this day considered to be one of the best examples on how to give a villain character a redemption arc. Mostly because unlike almost every other cartoon or show, the ENTIRE SHOW of ATLA is Zuko going through the change before he's even READY to redeem himself and then he has to actually WORK at proving he's ready to be a good person. Most other shows and cartoons will just have the villain go through some or other trauma and then the good guys feel sorry for them and they're suddenly welcomed into the group.

also he trips up. from the time he gets that the fire nation is no longer a place for him in 2x1, he doesn't just get to know and integrate the earth kingdom and get better. he learns for himself different points of view from different people, like Iroh told him to, from victims of the war, to people who take advantage of the war, the poor, the rich etc, but also HE RETURNS TO THE FIRE NATION. he was a kid when he left, and a sheltered one at that, and then idealized the place for years, so he would always have a little bit of doubt as to whether or not he truly is right. by returning to the fire nation, having all his dreams come true, he can now know exactly why it is bad. like the palanquin to move fifteen meters, which might have been normal as a child, now seems ridiculous for the teenager who spent years walking and riding everywhere. it is only by realizing the destiny that was imposed on him that he could clear his sight to his actual destiny, and now he could ask himself the big questions Iroh asked of him. Zuko's stint in the fire nation is truly crucial to is character arc, and any redemption arc i believe. redemption is full of highs and lows, of mistakes and lessons learned in blood.

  • @morley364

    @morley364

Him returning to the Fire Nation is so huge as well because he gets what he wanted and THEN redeems himself. If he redeemed himself in Season 2, it would be because he thought he was just never going to get what he wanted and that he just had to accept it. So he's letting go, but not actively turning it down. It's certainly difficult to accept something just isn't going to happen, and to try to adapt to that and become a better person (as he did in Season 2), but it's so much more powerful to get what you want, have a lot of power and respect, and then say "this isn't okay, we shouldn't be doing this, and I don't want to support this". Redeeming himself after going back makes him an active agent who chooses his own redemption, rather than a passive one who accepts it.

And it's cuz he wasn't ever really a stereotypical 'villain'. He was an antagonist, yes, but not really a villain the way a character like Azula or Ozai is. And that pre-planned character-format allowed that redemption arc to be done quite well indeed.

The Zuko moments in Nightmares and Day Dreams are to me one of the most critical parts of his redemption arc. It would be one thing if everyone in the fire nation was constantly hating on him cus then it would be a matter of fine you don't like me I won't like you. But the fact that he got what he was looking for, sitting at his father's right hand in an important war meeting, and he realized that it wasn't right this wasn't who he wanted to be, that for me makes his arc so special because he chose to be good even though he got everything he had always wanted.

But i think i've come to realise that it doesn't matter. When i lay on my death bed, what will really matter to me is that i lived my life my way. When i die, it wont matter if i lived my life according to expectations or not. What will matter is that i spent my chance at life being happy. If that means spending too much time playing video games and not complying with societal expectations, that wont matter to anyone but me.

Zuko's redemption arc is so masterfully done, it really speaks to anyone who has ever struggled to overcome something be it internal or external. There is the possibility for change in all of us, it's not easy and we might fail several times, but getting there is truly satisfying and seeing it exemplified in his character is beautiful.

It took Zuko getting what he thought he wanted to realize it wasn't what he thought. He had this hope in him, based on childhood hope, for his father's approval, even love. It was always the main drive. To the point it blinded him to everything else. Even when he started finding happiness and hope in other things he still had the deepest part of his heart for his old honor. When he finally got it, it freed him to really look at himself, his actions, what he truly is. He realized something was not what he expected. He felt wrong. He went thru routes of being angry, ordering an assassin, and just trying to be a good obedient son without a care in the world. The feeling of it all being wrong and not who he was replaced his need for his fathers love and approval. This is where I felt Zuko truly took an mature step. He chose to leave the Fire Nation. His whole arc has been my favorite ever. I am so hyped for the next 2 reactions!!!

The best part of Zuko is how he was always suppose to turn around and be good. Even before he became a fan favorite. Most shows sees one character become popular and then try to make them good so they can keep them in the series. Never changing their plan for Zuko is what made him and his journey so amazing, it is great writing at it's finest. I honestly think Badd Medicine should watch LoK because it's very different but still a good show. Just don't compare the two and you'll truly enjoy the differences in Avatars and how the world changes.

I still remember watching the invasion episode live as a kid. At the time Nickelodeon had only announced the episodes up until the invasion, and marked it as this big epic finale! So me, and my friends went into it thinking this was it only to be shocked by the ending. Back then it was the kids version of who did negan kill, because everyone was theorizing what would happen next. Then we had to wait 7 months to get the last 10 episodes which were promoted as countdown to Sozin’s comet where Monday through Friday night they released a new episode. (Expect Wednesday they released both episodes of the boiling rock) it all cumulated to that Saturday were they released the 4 part epic finale as as basically a 2 hour tv movie!

Oh I remember this too!! 😱 My whole family loved this show and so every time a new episode aired, we would all be eating dinner and watching it. But in particular, I still remember my brothers, all 6 of them, and me like glued to the screen when the invasion was going on and being absolutely shocked and livid at the end. Add that to then having to wait for the rest of the season on top of that! We all talked about it for weeks! It was honestly such a fun experience and I wish I could experience watching this again for the first time as they aired. Because Nickelodeon really knew what they were doing to us by separating the season like that and basically pranking us with the invasion being the "big finale." And then airing the episodes like they did for the last ones? Genius! Loved every minute of it as a child! Still do! 😊

Zukos redemption ark is the longest and most thouroughly explored one I ever saw! He wasn't just suddenly good, like magicaly happens in many shows. No, he struggled with the thing he wanted more than anything in the world: His fathers approval and love! And his immaturity got so many times in his way because, like Aang said, he's just a teenager! Thats why it felt so natural. The producers took no easy way out to make him good. It took him disillusionment by neaarly getting imprisoned by Azula, a whole self find journey alone, his uncles serious talk and the difficult, cripling inner battle that followed to become a good person again. And then he needed to get what he always wanted to realize that he became a good person and what he wants is no longer his fathers approval. He finally matured and realized his naive decision to rejoin his father. Now he carves his own path! It inspires you because you see how difficult it is to change for the better and that it takes time to realize that it is good that you changed!

But when she became a teacher they morphed into teacher dreams. When she retired, she went back to student dreams. Suggesting being a student is more traumatic than being a teacher? I never really got the student dreams. But I sure get the teacher dreams now that I am a college professor.

Just saw that y’all are going through this show. Loving the reactions. Zuko’s final push to the heroes is some of the strongest writing I’ve seen in a show since Darth Vader. Love really shines in Zuko, even from the earlier episodes. It’s buried in his stubborn actions. You could argue that Azula is the same way, as she’s done nothing but grow up during a war, in a war lord’s favor. Like most strong scripts, every perspective is on display and it becomes increasingly complex as the story progresses. Glad you all enjoy it.

So popular fan theory I like is that Azulon didn't actually command Ozai to kill Zuko, but commanded him to give his son to Iroh to raise and treat as his son and heir to pay for the gall to try and take advantage of Iroh's son dying. Ozai would rather kill Zuko than allow him to pass him in the succession order, and Azula knew that and that's why she came to mock Zuko. notice both Azula and Ozai allude to the idea of 'losing a son" "doing the unthinkable" but they never just say Azulon commanded Ozai to kill Zuko despite them never shying away from saying words like kill in any other episode.

When watching ATLA, i was first so disappointed that zuko did not turn over to the good side in the last episode of season 2 But later I realized that it was SO MUCH better that he went back and actually got the things he so wanted - dad’s approval, prince status etc. and THEN realize how shallow and unimportant those things were He self realizes his path, the fact that he is actually good and that his uncle was the father figure he was lucky to get (its the typical teenager to young adult transformation we all face where we don’t take our parents advice and support seriously as teenagers and then appreciate it so much when we become young adults)

Katara really let him know. She reached out to Zuko once already and his betrayal at the end of Book 2 nearly cost Aang his life. She's really not having it this time. The only reason she is giving him a second chance, albeit unwillingly, is for Aang's sake. I appreciate that she told Zuko upfront at the beginning that if he even looks like he'll step out of line she will step in and end him permanently. It really is that serious for her because trusting him before was nearly the biggest mistake of her life. Great writing.

There are regular cats. The was Miyuki in the Blue Spirit and the Cat that got stuff in the zoo Aang made in Tales of Ba Sing Se. Also the panthers that chased Momo weren't mixed with anything. . There are subtle behavior patterns of certain characters in the show that sometimes get missed. Katara's behavior toward Zuko is the same as it is toward Jett. She gave them her trusted and they betrayed that trust and she is pissed and distrustful of them going forward.
