There's an inside joke with the merchandise. George Lucas made no money from Star Wars, instead taking 100% of merchandise sales. It's probably the biggest spin in Hollywood history. When it came time to make Spaceballs, Mel Brooks was forbidden to sell any merchandise for the film. So he worked the merchandise into the movie instead.

RE: Anti-Semitic microaggression - Many of Mel Brooks's movies are about taking the power away from racism and anti-Semitism by making them into jokes. Brooks is Jewish himself, but made a comedy movie about Polish Jews under the Nazis (To Be or Not to Be) and a musical and movie with the song "Springtime for Hitler (The Producers). His best film, IMNSHO, is Blazing Saddles, which you should definitely watch.

IMHO, "The Producers" is Brooks's best film. Not necessarily the funniest, in the sense of having the most jokes, but certainly the best constructed, which is why he won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. FWIW, Brooks's To Be or Not To Be is a remake. The original was made in 1942 and starred Jack Benny and Carole Lombard.

Yeah, whoever told her it's a Star Wars parody really missed the mark, since it's really Mel Brooks' *scifi* parody, loosely based on Star Wars! She comes in expecting literal correlation between characters, so gets more & more confused when Barf isn't a faux Wookie, Luke doesn't exist, Vespa is a stereotypical helpless princess, President Skroob isn't a galactic dictator; & the plot is a wild jaunt hitting several scifi & fantasy references!

The scene where the guy had an alien burst out of his chest was a recreation of the same scene form the movie "Alien". The actor was John Hurt, the same actor that had this happen to him in Alien, that's why he said "Not again." Watch Alien, it's a great movie.

Hi Mary! I’m sure everyone has already filled you in, however... Mel Brooks is famous for his satire, spoofing of other movies, breaking the fourth wall and completely throwing PC out the window. He’s a Jewish Actor, Writer, Director, Producer, and Comedian. He makes it a point to consistently take stereotypes of every kind and make fun of it all. Being Jewish himself, he makes it a point to really go to town on his own, as it were. You really have to have seen more films in popular culture before seeing his stuff, to see all the little nods to other films in them. He’s fantastic for a laugh, and yes, you have to throw PC out the window and just have fun. I’d highly recommend reading about the films before going into them, if you see any mentions of the original source films, classics, etc, start there before watching his. His Young Frankenstein is an absolute classic and if you watch anything else of his, I’d recommend starting here. Everyone knows at least a little about Frankenstein. Thanks for your great channel and keep up the great work!

@@paulvana2048 As for Mel Brooks brilliant and dangerous parody of the Old West, Blazing Saddles is a classic! Within the lightheartedness, slapstick, and some very broad humour, there is biting satire and social comment on bigotry and prejudice of many kinds. And then there's The Producers, which scandalized everybody, too, especially with the subject of the parody musical within the movie. I have a soft spot, too, for his Hitchcock homage, High Anxiety.

Mel Brooks is indeed Jewish, he makes a ton of Jewish jokes and references in his films. Also the alien popping out of the guy's stomach in the diner is a parody of the movie 'Alien'... The guys says "Not again!" because he's the same actor who was in that film. The song "Hello My Baby" that the alien dances to is the same song that Michigan J. Frog danced to in several Warner Brothers Bugs Bunny shorts. I think it's a goofy fun movie with some dated references, jokes and juvenile humor, but otherwise I watch it from time to time 😊

So, here is a very brief crash course in Mel Brooks: As many others have said, Mel Brooks is a very, very Jewish individual. He served in the US Army during WWII defusing landmines. He started out as a writer for Sid Caesar in the late 1940s and into the 1950s with the The Admiral Broadway Revue, Your Show of Shows, and Caesar's Hour (which was kind of the Saturday Night Live of it's day with a cast and writer's room that is still held as a golden standard in comedy). His writing for Sid Caesar actually won him an Emmy for writing. Along with Carl Reiner (who was also on Your Show of Shows and Caesar's Hour and who also created The Dick Van Dyke Show), he created the character of the 2,000 Year Old Man which is a routine he performed with Reiner for over fifty years, producing numerous comedy albums, which won him a Grammy. He created the tv show Get Smart and after that went into film, writing and directing films such as The Producers (for which he won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay), Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, History of the World Part I, Spaceballs, and Robin Hood: Men in Tights. In 2001, his first film, The Producers, was adapted as a Broadway musical and broke the record for most amount of Tony Awards won in an evening. He is one of twelve people on this planet who has won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.

Mel Brooks is a comedic genius, but you have to understand his parody ethos. If you can't ruthlessly mock something, you don't really love it. Whoever suggested this movie wildly under-prepared you for it. It is not a simple parody of Star Wars, but of science fiction as a genre, with spoofs of Planet of The Apes, Alien, Buck Rogers and more among the Star Wars gags. Trying to make all the gags fit into a Star Wars shaped box set you up for disappointment. The merchandising joke is a dig at how George Lucas made his fortune through his contract with Fox over the merchandise profits of Star Wars, and how when he was asked for his blessing to parody Star Wars, said it was OK so long as they didn't make merchandise.

Mary, never be offended on behalf of others; unless you actually know a person that is offended. By know I mean actually know and have a relationship with. You are going well out of your way to find offense in jokes that are just that, jokes. As you've read, Mel Brooks is Jewish; in your theoretical hierarchy of offense he has more seniority then you.

Prince Valium is named after the sedative Valium and the newspaper comic character Prince Valiant.

5:21 I think, “Snoddy” is a parody to Montgomery Scott “Scotty” the chief engeneer of USS Enterprise, played by James Dohan. In the original series and movies Scotty is from Scottland, thats why “Snoddy” is wearing a beret and kilt.
