Upon learning the lyrics of this video, I have come to have a MASSIVE appreciation for this song. The use of the beautiful woman representing Germania was absolutely captivating. Her beauty radiates, but comes at a cost. Rammstein wants to love and appreciate her, but has a hard time due to her violent past. This video was not just music, but rather a piece of art. They push the boundaries to get their message across. I have much love and respect for this band now. I would love to learn more about them and cannot wait to experience more of their music with you all ♥

You're gonna see the best live band on this planet. Their shows are legendary. It's nearly impossible to get tickets . They are sold out in minutes. I got lucky 2019 . My best friend got us tickets and it was amazing. Can't wait to see your Rammstein journey

In the beginning Germania gets the head of a roman soldier. This refers to the battle in Teutoburg forest where the german tribes annihilated three legions plus auxiliary troops (between 15.000 and 20.000 romans lost). Until today Germania carries that head (the victory) around in pride.

good for you for taking the time to dig into the meaning of the song! I don't think it's always necessary to enjoy a song, particularly in metal where many songs stand on their own from a musical and vocal perspective, but Deutschland is a great example of a message lifting a song to greater heights through lyrics and imagery. I'm from Germany so let me give you some thoughts from someone who's born here. First of all, first time I watched the video I was shocked and deeply moved. The song/ video takes a very deep look into our german souls and how most of us feel about our country. It's a love- hate- relationship. The video is loaded with tons of symbols, that as a German you catch onto. Let's start: in the intro you see Germania ( Personification of Germany) during roman/ germanian tribes time. The red Lazer represents the "red thread" of the story/ history. Astronauts from the future bringing Germania in a glass coffin (snow-white) so she can lead through the/her german history. Next you observe the twenties(Weimar Republic).The prison scene representing the rough, violent times especially for the majority of the population struggling to survive. Money raining down/ the great depression. And Germany's first try as a democratic state. In between Germania is dressed in knight's armor awaking her knights/band with the Lazarus spear. Next Germania is pushed in a wheelchair by the band through the Berlin Holocaust Memorial with burning bodies. Next vignette the office scene showing east Germany and west Germany reunited (1989). Then you're being taken back to mideveal times, monks/ church are feasting off of Germania. In most scenes you'll see some church man involved. No coincidence. The concentration camp scene in the background you see V2 rockets ignition. The inmates are wearing different types of stars on their chests and a sign on the gallows reads: no photos. Germania wears an eye-patch first on her left, than on her right eye. Than a quick shot of Germania dressed modern with lots of gold leading german shepherds., representing Germany's wealth. The 70's scene shows the RAF- extremists holding Germania/ Germany hostage. Next vignette is the witch burnings shifting to the book burning. If you have a close look, at minute @ you see a church man holding up a cross hugging a Nazi, symbolising the churches over all position to the horrific events happening during 1933-1945. The birth scene. Germania is giving birth to dogs respectively "Leonberger" a breed preferred by Kings and Queens. The Breed almost went extinct during WW1 and WW2. A cardinal helping (dressed in red) a new Germany being born. At minute @ you see the riots against refugees homes in the 90's in Hoyerswerda. Molotovs are being thrown and a car is being pushed over with the help of a man dressed in Nazi uniform. Than the scenes/ time vignettes start shifting faster and faster, showing how many times, when circumstances becoming to extreme everything is falling apart and Germania ( dressed in knight's) armor is crying. The outro is the piano version of the song "Sonne" which completed how we feel thinking of our past: a sense of sadness. To sum it up. Germany has a long, wild, violent, unique history, because we as a state of today exist only since 1989. Yet the roots go back a very long time. "Young and yet so old" I hope that helped a little to understand the video and with that us Germans. We don't have a strong feeling of patriotism, but a strong sense of unity. It's complicated. With love from Germany 🤘 😎

I'm still amazed by the word play "Deutschland, Deustchland über allen" instead of "alles". The original phrase, which is referenced here, is the first of three parts of the german national anthem, of which only the thrid part is still used. The switch of "s" with "n" shifts the meaning from "germany over all" to "germany over everyone" and it's brilliant for multiple reasons. The original phrase has a bad reputation now, because it recieved a nationalist undertone, when it was used to propagate war and racial superiority, even so it was originally meant to celebrate the unification in peace of all the small german states under one banner. In a litteral sense the phrase promotes unity, which is a good thing, but the meaning was twisted for nationalistic power fantasies (like many old german words and phrases that are not used anymore for that reason). Because of the nationalistic undetone, it is forbidden now (or at least it's deemed questionable to use it openly). So Rammstein switching the letter also means avoiding to use a forbidden phrase directly. Simultaniously they shift the meaning of the lyrics to match the nationalistic idea that was promoted with it, making it the actual agressive phrase the nationalists meant, instead if the peacfull one that they used. At the same time every German knows what they are reffering to, even so it's not the same word for word, making it a perfect thought provocation. Even more genius is the common phrase "wer hoch steigt, der wird tief fallen", which means "the higher you rise, the deeper you fall". A warning not to aim higher than you can reasonably reach, because with the increasing reward the risk also rises. Immediately after that, they repeat "germany over everyone" again, implying that the nationalists got what was coming for them with their ideology, that aimed to elevate them higher than they were capable to reach. In fact Germany's history, especially it's rise and fall in the 20th century, is a pendulum swinging between the highest and the lowest point. The German pride seem to only know 120% or 0%, no moderate middle ground. The German nationalists became arogant and thought they had a brith right to claim power, racially superior and moraly untouchable. Every opposition silenced, for what could they know or provide, that "we" don't have already? But they were very mistaken and caused Germany to fall to it's lowest point in history. Old wisdom, known for centuries, proved itself against the test of time: "the higher you rise, the deeper you fall". If there is any lesson to take away for modern days, it's that. Pride is something you earn in hopefully small doses after achieving something great. Pride for something you made up in your mind to be "the truth", before achieving anything, is a dangerous thing. It's like setting course on the street and then driving foreward full spead with eyes closed. Only time will tell if you end where you claim to head, but it's most probable that you'll crash into a wall or worse into another car before even coming close. There is always so much undertone buried in the words Rammstein use for their lyrics. You can be assured, that every word with all it's burried meaning is exactly where they want it to be. A dark poem backed up by industrial metal, that's Rammstein.

Wenn man die Zeile "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles!" einfach aus dem Zusammenhang herausreisst, nur dann wirkt das ganze wie nationalistische Überheblichkeit. -> Letztlich ist in der ersten Strophe der Nationalhymne von gemeinsamer Landesverteidigung die Rede und nicht von Angriffskriegen. Die meisten Leute sind leider geschichtlich ungebildet. Der erste Weltkrieg als Ursache für den zweiten wird von vielen fast völlig ignoriert. Lässt sich weniger gut politisch instrumentalisieren. Ist doch das viel einfachere Weltbild, wenn man Hitler zum Teufel hochstilisieren kann. Man schwafelt gegenüber den jüngeren Generationen was von historischer Verantwortung, suhlt sich in Wirklichkeit aber lieber in sogenannter Erbschuld (die es zumindest offiziell doch gar nicht gibt). Je länger das dritte Reich zurück liegt, umso mehr selbsternannte Antifaschisten gibt es, die Menschen mit anderer Meinung das Prädikat "rechts" aufdrücken wollen, um sie aus dem politischen Diskurs zu verdrängen.

Its the same guys its been since the start which is not very common in many bands so props to them.

Some fun facts: This song was the first gift from Rammstein after their previous album was at that point 10 years ago. They didn't announce it. They just released the song. And the hype was bigger than ever. Also fun fact: in 2024 Rammstein will be together as a band for 30 years in the same exact constellation as when they started.

Rammstein is playing a classic "Industrial Metal" style. A 50-50 mix of synthesizers and hard metal guitarrs. A big part of the German history in one video. The black woman as Germania. Germania is the mother of the German nation. It isn't and wasn't a Goddess or Joan of Arc. The glass coffin: It is Little Snow White from the Grimm-fairytales....and from their own video "Sonne". Only with black skin and in space. The piano song at the end is the song "Sonne", too. The battle of the Teutoburg forrest against the Romans (and Rammstein as Roman soldiers and Germans alike). That battle is of ABSOLUTE importance for the German history. The hanged bodies in the trees were the beaten Roman soldiers, who were gruesome sacrificed to the Germanic gods...and were partly nailed to the trees. The Varus-(Teutoburg)-Battle was already in 9 AD. In 16 AD were the vengeance campaigns of Emperor Germanicus. Therefore we see here the arrival of the Roman troops of Germanicus and they are watching their dead comrades hanging in the trees or getting their heads chopped off (for nailing them to the trees). In reality the Romans under Germanicus found only the bones of the Varus army in the various ways they were slaughtered, sacrificed and displayed at the trees. Slaves were liberated even decades after the battle. After the scenes with the Romans we saw the Hindenburg Zeppelin disaster (the burning Zeppelin in the background). The moustaches and clothing from the fight scene are from WWI and post WWI years. From the working class people in WWI and the roaring 20's. In the WWII years later on this kind of big bushy moustache was already out of fashion The V2 rocket (first manmade object in space) as technical triumph of the German spirit...and at the same time the killing of the concentration camp prisoners in the bunker factories below the mountains during the production of that rocket. This scene in the video could be a representation of a very specific concentration camp. It was "Mittelbau-Dora" below the Kohnstein mountain. A mixture between a big, huge bunker factory for V1 and V2 rockets and a concentration camp. The concentration camp inmates had several different markings for different kinds of convicts and their "crimes" sown to their chests, like it was in reality, too. A pink triangle for homosexuals, the star of David for Jews and two of them were marked with the double-triangles for Jehovas Whitnesses. The book burnings of the Nazis and the burning of the witches of the church. In the same scene with the book burning there is EVEN MORE going on. The cooperation of the church with the Nazis, when the priest with the cross embraces the Nazi SA-man. The scene with the sign with the Hammer and a pair of compasses in a circle of wheat is the sign of the GDR (DDR). The socialst German state in the east that existed before the German reunification. Therefore it was Karl Marx in the background in the scene with the tank (not the scene at the concentration camp). The scene with Rammstein wielding guns (the pumpgun) and taking Germania hostage was about leftwing terrorism of the 1970's. The terrorists were called the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion). My interpretation of the red scanner-like beams: There are two different kinds of beams. The massive straight red light beam that goes up into the heavens AND there were those smaller, thinner "scanner" beams. Aliens (or humans from the future) are scanning the whole German history. Like some real scientists are scanning and excarvating ancient Mexican or Egyptian statues, for example. The massive red light beam is the red ribbon of time that ties together all the historical events.

Concerning the colors: Germania in that white uniform at the prison scene references the colors of Prussia (Preußen), which were black and white. Prussia itself was the most important state in pre-state-germany and, when it finaly decided to do so, the driving force in creating the first german national state.

As a German I think that in order to appreciate this song fully, one needs to have the lyrics at hand and know about 2000 years of history and what it did to our understanding of Germany. This song brilliantly depicts parts of history and the feeling that history created in most of Germans. I actually know not one German who says he is proud to be German, but I know a lot who say that they are happy to be German.

My great-grandparents moved from Germany, most of my family still speak it. Our small town Church still has first morning service in German and majority of my area is ethnic German (Some Czechs and Scandinavians). It is a common subject that its is odd we have more pride in being German than Germans and most of our grandparents fought against their kin. My great-grandfather fought against Germany at the same time his brother served on U-boats. Then again through German history I guess fighting ones kin is tradition.

As a non german, i can say you should be proud of beeing german. Twice in somewhat recent history germany has been razed to the ground. Look at you guys now, back at beeing europe's richest and most advanced country? Everything made in germany is synonym of quality and luxury. Theres's got to be something you guys are doing good. There is no people on earth I respect more than Germans. Almost every single country that have comitted heinous atrocities against humanity deny it, lie about it, downplay it. You accept it, own up to it and strive to be better. Nothing is more admirable than that.

If you pay attention to little details, the angel wings she wears at the end of the video are the same angel wings Till uses at live shows for the song Engel, except they shoot fire during their live shows.

The drummer is Christof 'Doom' Schneider. He is a superstar and seemed to be well grounded. I saw an interview with him where he was talking about his family and I thougt 'Wow, this man is so unbelievable normal.' The live from Paris in Bercy is unforgettable.

This is my absolute favourite Rammstein song. A lot of people don't understand this and they focus on the images of nazis and concentration camps, on the violence that is in this clip.That happens a lot with Rammstein, you have to study the lyrics closely and connect them to the song and to the images portrayed. I think you did a great job in understanding this song and what Rammstein means to convey with it. Thank you! For a next reaction, 'Sonne' would be good, or Rosenrot.

This song is a real masterpiece of art, culture, lyrics, symbols. Just every detail, the colours of costumes, just every fucking detail is pure art - oh my god. I’m from Norway and love this song, the whole interpretation is so amazing. Rammstein is full of philosophy and details. I love Germany, germans are very unique and figured their history very well 😌 Thank you for showing us your reaction, you did a great job 👏

The drummers name is Christoph Schneider - you should react/listen to "Benzin" (they have a great live performance at Madison Square Garden that you can find on youtube) - I love the drums in that song :D

I think you nailed it that the ending of Sonne conveys a feeling of pain with a smidge of Hope... that is basically the german mindset in a nutshell... I can't help but tear up when finishing with that song as outro and ending on Ruby Commey with our heraldic animal, the golden eagle, which also mirrors the flag: black eagle, black ruby, golden armor, red background.

Pay attention to omnipresence of gold (yellow), black, and red... German national flag. The red laser represents the events bleed into each other, linked by the presence of the band members and the red laser beam that appears throughout the video, a ‘roter Faden’ (red thread or central theme), connecting each event.

2000 years in less than 10 min....even as a german and watching it so many times, you still find some details pointing to an episode in history

This absolute masterpiece of art is jam packed full of both historical context and Rammstein's expressions on several of these historical aspects. It would take well over an hour to even go into some of the minor details stuffed to bursting into this video. Because almost EVERY. SINGLE. CUT. is linked with a line of the lyrics, getting more and more detail both of the historical period, the background as pertaining to the lyrics, and Rammstein's opinion on it. Yes, the video was INTENTIONAL controversial, but when was a Rammstein video ever NON-controversial?!? Damn bloody amazing.

Christian "Flake" Lorenz is the keyboardist, pianist for Rammstein and is one of the most underrated members of the band, imo. Just the fact that he is the main composer of the music along with Richard Kruspe is awesome. Those two have a chemistry and work so well off of each other.

That scene is about the hyper-inflation of the 1920's, that took away the savings of the Germans and left them in deep poverty and desperation. Especially the poor ones and the simple workers. Therefore it was Karl Marx in the background in the scene with the tank (not the scene at the concentration camp). The scene with Rammstein wielding guns (the pumpgun) and taking Germania hostage was about leftwing terrorism of the 1970's. The terrorists were called the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion). My interpretation of the red scanner-like beams: There are two different kinds of beams. The massive straight red light beam that goes up into the heavens AND there were those smaller, thinner "scanner" beams. Aliens (or humans from the future) are scanning the whole German history. Like some real scientists are scanning and excarvating ancient Mexican or Egyptian statues, for example. The massive red light beam is the red ribbon of time that ties together all the historical events. PS: As for the dogs: Germans are fanatical dog lovers. We are a dog-owner nation. The dog is a firm part of Germany. PPS: They didn't eat the body of the woman and her inner organs, even if it really looked that way. They were eating the national dish of Germany, that was put on the body of the black woman: Sauerkraut, Kassler & sausages. In my opinion it symbolizes the church eating itself fat on the goods and values and food of Germany during the simple people (farmers, simple workers etc) lived a long time in a kind of hell of poverty and serfdom (the red fetish area below the table with Germania on it). But that eating scene could indeed have a double meaning. It could represent the 30 years war, that was fought for religious reasons and depopulated large areas of Germany. It forced the people to commit canibalism because nobody was there anymore to produce food. Except the fat, wealthy people of the church, of course. They were still able to eat enough. Only the simple people at the bottom (farmers etc) died from hunger and had to fight and die in that war. The 30 years war was the biggest catastrophe in Germany until WWI happened. PPPS: The short scene with the dogs and their gas masks = WWI, where in reality animals (messenger dogs & horses) AND soldiers were wearing gas masks, too. PPPPS: The puppies at the end are Leonberger dogs. The Leonbergers nearly went extinct during WWI and WWII. PPPPPS: The black woman in the prison was dressed in a Prussian uniform with a Prussian helmet. Till sings the famous, often misinterpreted, line of the "Deutschlandlied" (Song of the Germans), that is not forbidden in Germany but simply isn't sung anymore in our modern national anthem. Till sings in his version the line "Deutschland über allen" (Germany above everybody) What is a BIG change to the real line in the orginal Deutschlandlied-song. In the original Deutschlandlied song it is written as "Deutschland über alles" (Germany above everything). The real, whole line of that old Deutschlandlied goes "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles. Über alles in der Welt" (Germany, Germany above everything. Above everything in the world). This line is often misinterpreted by many people as chauvinism and as a looking down upon all other countries on this planet. But that is wrong and not many people know about that in Germany and elsewhere. The writer of that famous line didn't meant it in a chauvinistic way. When that song was written, Germany was divided into umphteeth mini-states, what made Germany relative powerless and defenseless. Therefore the task of German unification was the goal above any other goal for all Germans (at least the writer of the song meant it that way). So the main goal for all Germans had to be the united Germany. The goal of "(united) Germany above everything else". That was, how that line was meant by the writer of the song. The line isn't forbidden, like many people wrongly think. It's simply not sung anymore and not part of the official anthem of modern Germany anymore. This has NOT its reason in the seemingly chauvinist meaning of "Deutschland über alles", like many people wrongly think. This whole stanza of the Deutschlandlied isn't sung anymore, because in other parts of the stanza are borders and landscapes mentioned, that aren't German borders and landscapes anymore. We want to live in peace with the people and countries, who are now living in those former German lands and therefore we don't sing about those old borders and landscapes anymore. It has nothing to do with the "Deutschland über alles" line in that stanza, like many people wrongly are thinking. Finally: The scenes I'm now talking about are pretty dark and low light. The WWII submarine in the submarine bunker during the astronauts are walking by with the glass coffin. I think, the choice of the black woman as main actress was made, because: a) it makes any accusations of racism and fascism against Rammstein useless b) she represents one colour of the German flag and she is wearing the rest of the colours of our German flag as makeup and jewellery and clothes on her body: Black, Red and Gold c) it provokes many people EVEN MORE 😄 My recommendation for a reaction: The band "Lord of the lost" and their song "Under the sun". Rammstein is one of the biggest bands in the world. Their production value has always been on point. Their videos are unique and original, and their live shows are the stuff of legend. It's a hard choice between watching their videos or watching their live shows. I say don't choose, do both! Lol

Ich denke das, dass Piano die zukunft darstellen sollen es kommt ja aus dem Song "sonne" also sprich wir lassen unsere dunkle Vergangenheit hinter uns und schauen nach vorne zum Licht :) die Interpretation kann natürlich totaler blödsinn sein aber so verstehe ich es :)

The production value on this vid is out of this world. If this cost under 5-10 million to produce, I'd be surprised. The whole thing is just simply amazing and powerful.

I think seeing Till's face helps a lot to decipher what he's saying. He has a way of connecting with people who don't even speak the language by just giving you a piece of his soul with his voice/demeanor :)

While it is true that the piano in the end is based on a song by Rammstein (Sonne) which is co-written by Flake, Flake neither arranged nor did he play it. As THE ACTUAL CREDITS OF THE VERY FUXKING VIDEO THAT WE ARE WATCHING will tell you, it's arranged by Clemens Pötzsch, Lars Kutschke, Malte Rogacki and Sven Helbig, while it is played by Clemens Pötzsch. None of these people are Flake (real name Christian Lorenz), they're not even members of the band. It's always baffling how shamlessly some people spread false information smh.

Over 500 years of German history have been processed here in an absolutely brilliant song. You can see that the commentator has no idea about European history. The song by rammstein is genius. The lyrics are so profound that a whole army of historians is employed in one song. rammstein. a masterpiece.

I appreciate knowing most of the German language, Rammstein are pretty much my favourite band and I enjoy knowing what they say, it sounds so much better in German tho, makes it what it is, "DEUTSCLAND, Dein Atem kalt, so jung und doch so alt" "Germany, Breath so cold, so young and yet so old"

Rammstein has an album called Klavier, a set of some of their songs entirely in piano. It’s amazing, and a pair of pianists play some of them as the opening act for their stadium tour.

I am German, first time I watch it, I was shocked, because It struck a nerv deep down in my german soul. There are tons of symbols in it. That video goes into many phases of Germany's past and how will they move forward as a nation. Isn't it fascinating? I heard it back in the day in Germany when I was at a rave. It was a trace indeed and invigorating. It was so rich that I better keep details to myself, lol [what happens in Vegas and all of that. Oh, the memories.

Aileen You probably wanted to know how Rammstein gotten their band name? Band took the name from USAF Ramstein Base in then West Germany. Band wanted to be a musical memorial for infamous air show disaster happened in August of 1988. Incident occurred when group of ten Italian aircraft were doing stunts when midair collision causing 70 deaths with approx. 500 injuries. Band added another "m" in their name to avoid confusion with the air base.

Even For Germans hard to understand and to recognize all episodes of german history shown in this video, sometimes only a short picture. And he does not know, if he should love or hate Germany for its history. By the way: the Name of the drummer is Christoph Schneider. His father is an opera director and his mother a music teacher. And in school he was taught by his mother, what he found horrible. He learned also piano and trumpet, but his love were the drums. For me he is one of the best drummers in the World. He is so precise and he drives the band through the Songs. I am 73 years old and I love the band and your reactions.

The Alto is one of their Biggest Hits, Sonnet . It was also used as a background beat in the main song. Alot of the props that were used in the vid were also from other videos of theirs.
