Incredible songwriter and vocalist. She's going up an entire octave there...and still singing comfortably. For most singers to get that high, they would bottom out into vocal fry when they came back down low, but Brandi can sing in the basement as well.

This song was featured in an episode of Grey's Anatomy. - Season 7, Episode 18. It is sung by Sara Ramirez who also has a tremendous voice. the original air date was on March 31, 2011. This episode was a musical event where there were several songs presented.

This is one of those songs that can just break your heart. Her vocal quality in this - from the lyrical high notes, to the growly rasp, to the break in her voice - literally makes it sound like she's crying at times while singing the song. I can't think of anyone who pulls this quality off as well as she does, it is a distinction she carries by herself. Pretty cool.

This was the first song I ever heard from her (the studio version…which is worth checking out just to compare how insane her live version is) and I was in love immediately too! Despite being from Seattle, I think that's a Country twang that you're hearing. As I understand it, her parents were musicians who, through whatever twist of fate, knew many of the top Country artists well enough to have them to dinner when they were "in town," so Brandi grew up, sitting in her living room and pickin' and grinnin' with the likes of Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, and Kris Kristofferson, among others. It makes sense. I mean, she clearly has a very deep well to draw from for both her performing and for her songwriting. Of my top ten all time favorites are "Dreams," "Turpentine," "The Story," and "The Joke." And I absolutely love how she is profoundly and unapologetically 110% her true and authentic self. Her songs and who she is have both inspired me and helped me through some hard times. I would not be who I am today without her (and the twins). Consistent excellence, year after year after year and, hopefully, for many years to come.

Joni lost her ability to sing after a medical issue but was able to perform again at this festival last year. Everyone was emotional and it’s so beautiful to see.

Mmm... Saw Brandi (which, weird fact: yes it is her name, but she's not a solo act; Brandi Carlile is also the name of the band she formed with the Hanseroth twins (the bald guys on bass and guitar): early on, they agreed everything was split 3 ways between them) in March 2020. COVID scared away half the people who had bought tickets, then the lockdown happened, and they wound up being the last show I saw for a year and a half. This one turned up 1/3rd of the way through the set, and those vocals that flipped you out brought a standing ovation at the end of the song, so not a bad moment to go out on... You want more that'll blow your mind like that, I suggest "The Joke" or "Broken Horses."

The beautiful song that Phil Hanseroth (one of the twins in the video) wrote has a melody that descends quite a bit from the beginning to the end. Brandi does a masterful job of changing octaves at strategic points, except for the last verse, where she lays into the highest part at the beginning in the upper octave. Also, from hearing her perform this before, she sounds like she has a bit of a cold. Try another performance and I'm pretty sure you'll hear what I mean, but she has the talent and experience to get through the performance anyway. And add another recommendation for "The Joke". Personally, I like the official video over the Grammy performance. The sound is better, and she films with a group of people who represent all the various people she is singing about and for, and it's essentially anyone who has ever been looked down on or dismissed as something less, and it is one powerful outflow of empathy and emotion.

I really really wish you reacted to the studio versions first before you check out the live versions. There are a few exceptions where the live is better, Queen is a very good example. But for the most part the first impression of a song is better with the studio version. This is a very very good live performance though, but still. You also pause at strange times and it kinda ruins the flow imo lol. Especially the part at 4:55.
