Oh hey, welcome to the Geoff Castellucci rabbithole! (His name is pronounced the same as Jeff) Geoff is indeed an amazing talent, and since you know some stuff about video production, you'll be pleasantly surprised to hear that Geoff does it ALL. He is the arranger of this piece, he sang it all, he did the initial mix (Ed Boyer does all his final mixes, as well as the final mixes for VoicePlay, the a cappella group where Geoff is the bass vocalist), the video concept, directing, filming (along with his wife Kathy, who serves as his and VoicePlay's production manger), and editing etc. And then he does the same thing 50% of the time for VoicePlay (another amazing group- easily Pentatonix's equal) I don't think you'll be disappointed by anything Geoff produces, although I would say that his cover of Bill Withers' classic "Ain't No Sunshine" is a remarkable tribute to an already amazing song, and what I consider to be one of his best solo arrangements. VoicePlay recently dropped a cover of "Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica that Geoff arranged, and it is currently breaking reactors left and right, in case you're interested in how he sounds when singing in a group.

@@brittreacts , get a huge piece of posterboard. List all of Geoff's videos, and all the videos of his a capella group Voiceplay, Hang it on a wall. Now, take a dart, close your eyes, and toss the dart at the posterboard. Whatever title you hit will be a winner! You can't possibly go wrong with any of them when you use this "proven scientific method"! Lol! Seriously, though, they really ARE that amazing! Also, you do NOT have to do any editing, blocking, filtering with any of their material. In fact, they refreshingly welcome reactors to use their material!

When it comes to Geoff Castellucci and Voiceplay its always fun to check in the description and see who did what on the videos. And to keep watching to the start of the Patreon list at the end for both. Sometimes there is some extras before the lists start rolling :) This man really got talent in abundance! Always fun seeing people react to Geoff's own stuff and Voiceplay :)

He's gotta do a duet of this song with Colm McGuinness
"How does he get his voice this deep?" All natural. This was done all with chest voice, so it's all within his normal speaking voice. Only around 5 out of 1000 men have a voice this deep. But, with Geoff, he also has a highly developed upper range, too. He is truly a unicorn.... with great hair :D
@jmorrin32

Yes but very very few of those five can sing that low and still be as smooth as Geoff, Tim and Avi

@@jmorrin32, very true... I have a deeper speaking voice and larger vocal range (lower and higher) than all 3... they will all 3 sing circles around me. Many people think that's a dig against them or a humble brag, but, no, it's more humbling to hear people like them sing like that through a wide range than anything. Geoff is my favorite singer on the planet for reason. Not a fan of PTX, but Avi solo has blown my mind, too. Tim is just Tim... he is always going to amaze.

No, actually. Tennessee Ernie Ford made it famous in 1955, but that was a cover. The song was originally recorded by Merle Travis in 1945.
I would suggest headphones for two reasons. One, catch all the sounds, two, it stops your mike from picking up your speakers. There is some overlap. Great to see you react to Geoff.
The song was written back in the days where stores were owned my manufacturing companies. They had all these people come to work with no supplies, so workers would go to the company stores and ask for supplies on credit. Interest was so high, the debt could never be paid, and was passed down from generation to generation. The government finally did something right, and put an end to that practice.
There are three AMAZING low bass guys in the world of acapella now, and you just met one here. Geoff works with the group Voice Play (recommend Voice Play's Mr Oogie Boogie). The next is Avi Kaplan from the group Pentatonix (recommend Pentatonix's Hallelujah). And then you have Tim Foust from the group Home Free (recommend Home Free's Man of Constant Sorrow). All three of these guys do some other collaborations and solo work as well and you will fall into a rabbit hole of AMAZEMENT into their world of vocal athleticism.

The wide-eyed look when he drops that first Geoff-quake did not disappoint. The squint at his final low growl to finish the video made me literally laugh right out loud. Nice reaction!
you don't need to put distortion on either the video or the audio. Geoff (Jeff) and the group he sings bass with (VoicePlay) manage themselves... no label, no manager... they make their own decisions. They do claim their copyrite, but that's fair, right? They do their own arrangements, their own videos, everything. I'm guessing you are going to have lots of fun with all of Geoff's covers, and with VoicePlay too. For Geoff - you might want to listen to his cover of Ain't No Sunshine, or his most recent, a 1944 love song from the war, Till Then. For VoicePlay - if you are in the mood for humor, listen to their cover of We Don't Talk About Bruno. If you want to hear the impossible, listen to their newest, a cover of Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters." They are all about the theatrical side, but they NEVER forget to make the music beautiful.
I always have closed captions on with Geoff and Voiceplay. His are frequently humorous, and they are always descriptive. His wife, Kathy, has severe hearing loss, so he is very sensitive to people with hearing issues. You will see that in his Ain't No Sunshine. This cover is the one that introduced me to Geoff 3 years ago. From there I found Voiceplay and I have been hooked ever since. You will find that we are a very loyal and active community. One of my greatest pleasures is to see a reactor experience Geoff or Voiceplay for the first time. Subscribed in anticipation of more.

I am certain she can feel his voice though.
There is a phenomenon that fans like to call the 'Geoffquake'. He can go as low or lower than some other true bass singers. There are video compilations that include his vocals, called 'Bass-Off' videos, basically comparing and contrasting different vocalists' capabilities. Best of all, by all accounts Geoff happens to be a really humble guy. I love finding GOOD people who actually deserve to succeed. :)
Lovely reaction! Geoff named his clones in his cover of the Elvis song 'Way Down", using the misspellings of his name 🤣. Then in 'Ghost Riders" he added one more. You would love both. (Edited - I subscribed. looking forward to more Geoff reactions)
Britt, best comment of the year... "he sounds like Pentatonix as one person...." OMG spot on
Yes, it does take a lot of work creating a music video like this. Yet this was all done by nobody else but Geoff and his wife, filming everything in a few hours while their little son was at school. Talk about efficient use of time!
Yes as you have discovered and as others have mentioned, Geoff is a freak of nature (with great hair). You have to check out Voiceplay, especially the song they released a week ago, their acapella version of Metallica's Nothing Else Matters. Geoff arranged it and it is seriously Grammy level. Simply amazing.
The only person I have ever heard that could rival Geoff is an old singer named Thurl Ravenscroft. He did the old LP record for the Pirates of the Caribbean (60/70s) and was the original voice of Tony the Tiger! THEEEEEERE GREAT! He was an amazing talent, sadly died years ago.
It's ALWAYS delightful to watch someone react to either Geoff or Voiceplay (the a cappella group he sings bass in). 🙂🙂 Welcome to Geoff ("Jeff") Castellucci's rabbit hole... And, as it'll be a natural consequence of it, to Voiceplay's even deeper rabbit hole 😁. Geoff has a 5 octaves range, and he uses it all smoothly and (apparently) effortlessly. He also sings all the parts, plays all the characters (often, each one has different outfits and make-ups, and they even earned NAMES! 😁), makes the arrangement, the storyboard, the recording, the video editing, everything but lights (often taken care of by Eli - rhymes wit "jelly" - Jacobsen, Voiceplay's marvellous tenor) and the final mix, which is done by Ed Boyer. 🙂 You can't go wrong with either catalogue. 🙂 Just subscribed, I don't want to miss your NEXT reactions to either of them! 😅 See you next time!
I dont know if you have seen this video of his, but if not, you must. It's called Ain't No Sunshine - Bill Withers (Bass Singer Cover by Geoff Castellucci) Please watch, I cant wait to see your reaction.
Well now you've done it! You've fallen down the Geoff Castellucci rabbit hole... His version of way down is hilarious, ain't no sunshine will break your heart, Shenandoah is just beautiful and bare necessities will make you petition for Jungle book to be remade with Geoff..... Then of course, as others have mentioned, there is Voiceplay... Their new release nothing else matters( which was arranged by Geoff) seems to be breaking some reactors at the moment... Oogie boogie song will show Geoff going from baritone to tenor and drop to subterranean in seconds... Tennessey whisky is harmonised so beautiful, I can't make you love me will have you reaching for tissues... Subscribing in anticipation. ❤🇬🇧
1:18 "This is a beautiful human" -- you're delightful. Subbed
Thanks for your expertise. Always nice to hear from a professional
You should check out the version by Tennessee Ernie Ford. It’s amazing. I’ve listened to Tennessee’s version of it for many years and kept hoping one of the current deep singers (Trace Adkins, Geoff Castellucci and others like them) would cover it. Finally someone did.

Geoff Misty Mountains Cold is pure chef kiss 😁
It is always fun to watch someone discover Geoff. Since you like him may I suggest a few songs to check out by him? I would recommend Misty Mountains Cold from the Hobbit movie, The Headless Horseman, and either Ain't No Sunshine or Blackbird. If you want to see him with his group, Voiceplay, Hoist the Colors and The Dragonborne Comes are good ones. Loved your reaction.
1997, Orlando FL a group of high school friends came together to create an acapella group then known as 4:2:Five (renamed VoicePlay). Founding members of the group were Mykal Kilgore (high tenor), Layne Stein (baritone), Earl Elkins Jr. (tenor), Geoff Castellucci (bass), and Scott Porter (vocal percussion). In 2000, they earned a win as "Best Pop Group" in Ed McMahon's Next Big Star contest. Kilgore left the group in 1999, and Porter in 2003 to pursue acting [Starred as Jason Street Friday Night Lights; law firm investigator Blake Calamar The Good Wife; George Tucker Hart of Dixie; Mayor Paul Randolph Ginny and Georgia; Casey Hughes soap opera As the World Turns]. He trained Layne to be his replacement beatboxer. The rest is history as Layne became a good beatboxer. He also does a lot of the musical arrangements. Members performed individually in shows at Disney & Universal on/off. I guess because of this, tend to be known as more theatrical compared to other acapella groups. Timing is everything as they competed on The Sing-Off alongside Home Free. Top groups can kill chances choosing wrong song, version or focus on wrong member. That's what happened. They ended up being 6th while Home Free won. During this competitive time and the tour, they became friends. Geoff arranged a few songs, one being Elvira, and Robb has appeared in a few in a few of their videos. During Covid stuck at home, I believe Geoff came up with the 4 man 'him'. Layne did some arrangements & both did the setup of the videos. Geoff's (Jeff aka) wife is a former singer & can do makeup & helps fill in (Monster Mash screamer). I'm not 100% sure, but I think you'll really like his "Ain't No Sunshine". Want to see sexy? That's it.
if you want to hear his full range I highly recommend Voiceplay OOGIE BOOGIE'S SONG !!

He's steadily adding to the list of these layered solo videos, so if you want an encore, try his version of the Elvis song "Way Down" ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/enxn2MNumpy4ebA.html ). For many years, Geoff's been the bass in the 5-man a cappella group VoicePlay. I think I'm getting introduced to a new page. This guy is awesome!
Geoff is a major player and founder of the a Capella group VoicePlay.
"He just sang us underneath the basement, y'all." Funny you should say that, one of the first times that he sang a super low note for VoicePlay (the ending note of his part in their video of "Oogie Boogie's Song" from 'The Nightmare Before Christmas', they winkingly put 'subterranean' besides the closed caption lyrics. They don't do it all the time, but for lots of videos it is super fun to have the captions on to see what commentary they add to it in addition to the lyrics. Yeah, the immediate hook is 'How does anyone sing that low?', and then it becomes, 'How can anyone who can sing that low also sing that high?' And it's one thing for him to record himself separately for different tracks where he's singing in the deep bass end as the lead and then in the backing tracks where he is singing in the baritone and tenor range. It's another thing entirely when you hear him seemingly effortlessly go all over the octaves in the solo lines. One reactor (who is operatically trained) specifically commented on the part where he does just that in this very song (Sixteen Tons) when he sings 'Can't no high toned woman make me walk the line!' that "He tosses off that line, going from very high to very low in a single phrase likes it's nothing, and I assure you, as someone who has spent years in the rigorous vocal training, that is not NOTHING!" I hope you continue to check out Geoff's individual videos along with his work with VoicePlay. Thanks for also recognizing his work in the production aspect. I find one of the best perks of being a patron of both Geoff and VoicePlay is to get to see their 'Behind The Scenes' videos of how they plan and film all of their amazing videos.

Frick yes! love this dude!
This song was written and first recorded by Merle Travis in 1946 and is about coal miners. The line in the song “another day older and deeper in debt” came from a letter his brother John wrote. And the line in the song “I can’t die because I owe my soul the company store” came from Merle’s Dad. In remote coal mining areas the company would build stores or a store with food and clothing for their employees where the miners were given “scripts” to buy what they needed. When cars became more prevalent it gave the miners more of an opportunity to travel farther and go to different stores and the company stores soon faded into history. The most popular version of this song was recorded by Tennessee Ernie Ford in 1956 and that recording is actually in the Library of Congress. You should listen to it.
Geoff is the bass with the a capella group VoicePlay. Check out their version of "The Oogie Boogie Song". You want low notes, this has 'em.

In checking your list, I don't see any Voiceplay. Geoff, as others have probably already mentioned, is their bass singer. They are basically the "theater kids" of a capella, where Pentatonix are the "popular kids" and Home Free are the country boys (although HF does a wide variety of styles).
