Geoff Castellucci "Sixteen Tons" REACTION & ANALYSIS by Vocal Coach / Opera Singer

We've enjoyed his deep, rich bass-baritone voice in his Disney a cappella medleys with VoicePlay, but now we're checking out his solo work. It's about time! Covering Tennessee Ernie Ford's country song "Sixteen Tons", which is about a coal miner's lament, and experience in life. Geoff Castellucci brings so much emotion and soul into this performance.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Geoff Castellucci singing solo for the first time, performing "Sixteen Tons”.

While musically appealing, I find this particular rendition too pop-y and dismissive of the fatalism of duty and surrender to circumstance. Tenessee is thus far the only rendition that truly captutes how dark yet resolute, this narrative's unfolding should be borne. One of iron and one of steel in particular, in this rendition comes across like they might as well have said burger and milkshake. Their actual voices are wonderfully lustrous, but they fundamentally do not understand the emotion of "owe my soul to the company store". To me personally, it sounds like a jazz remix by white people that do not understand the struggle that gave rise to jazz.

YUP! One of the best things about this channel is how much she LOVES music! This makes it FUN for her to react (so we have fun watching her). Elizabeth's professional background makes it possible for her to pick the technicalities apart into understandable pieces for laymen. It's AWESOME, which is why I keep watching her channel. She does get giddy, which is WONDERFUL to watch! It's hard to find people who are so invested and passionate. It's a beautiful thing to see.

All women featured in these reaction videos had a... well, let's say physical bodily reaction not completely in check by their forebrains, but rather the more reflexive sections. At least the body language as well as the facial expressions indicated a bit more than just a reaction to the musical pleasure. But that's ok in my book and completely relatable. :D

He has a video where he teaches and demonstrates how he gets low. It's essentially a vocal technique that's used in metal. Find your Vocal Fry and then add a bit of voice to it. Practice with the "O" sound and get the right tone to it. Once you sing that in a microphone, it amplifies it to the point of sounding gravely and shaky. kzread.info/dash/bejne/in-Aw7uAeK3VerA.html

Just wanted to point out, PattyCake Productions is a studio owned by Layne Stein and Tony Wakim, which is where this video was filmed. All the actual video production and editing is done by Geoff himself 🙂 and as others have said, there are no subharmonics in this song, the melody is all full voice 😊 Geoff confirmed it either in the comments of "Sixteen Tons" or in the live chat before the premiere, I can't remember. As far as the instruments, I believe he's using his keyboard and plug-ins. I don't believe any of his solo work so far has been a capella 🙂 If you turn on the captions, he confirms that he did a "super dramatic bend to F#1" at the end 😉 I really love your reactions and in-depth analysis, VoicePlay (and Geoff obviously) are my absolute favorite musicians, and it's so nice to see them get the recognition they deserve 💗

It's not sub, it's just a mix. Like fried-chest and chest-fry. It depends of the notes we're talking about, but the "thick" G# we can hear is fried. I can get the same type of tone with that technique. If you boost the bass and let drop the high, you get the same sound too. Last point : honestly it doesn't matter. Sub, pure chest, mix, growl.. I don't care. If it sounds beautiful, that's matters to me. And when Geoff sings, it makes me feel a lot of things! And I know that I'm not the only one!

My mom fell in love with my dad the moment she heard his voice booming from the back of the auditorium at the university. Dad loved singing Eastern Orthodox liturgy which requires such super-deep bass voices. His voice was sought by conductors and he sometimes was a member of two or three choirs at the same time. He sang in church (and I joined him a couple of times as I can read music from a sheet), but also traveled around the world, cut records, sang on stage in opera choruses, etc. Of course, over the decades of singing he made friends. The guys in his choir section - with equally incredibly deep voices - were his lifelong best friends. So, every now and then they'd come for dinner. After they ate, they'd each pick up one of my 3-4 guitars and start singing. Songs like "Go down Moses", "Long White Robe" and "Born under the Wandering Star" and yes, "Sixteen tons". The whole house was booming and shaking (and that was a 64-appartments building) and all the neighbors could feel it if not hear it. My voice is deep, but not like his. Also, unlike my Dad, I never studied how to sing properly (perhaps I can watch Geoff's videos on techniques of singing deep). I was, for many years, invited to all the parties to bring my guitar and sing. But how I wish I could sing the way he could. He died in 2003, and mom died last month (her 89 birthday would have been tomorrow). So these songs make me sad and nostalgic....

We are hanging out and there was a singer at an open mic thing. She was singing these songs and playing a guitar. Most of the songs were in a higher register. She sang about 6 songs then she broke out into sixteen tons in a very very low register. The room was shocked when her voice dropped down to those low notes. After the song ended she acknowledged the fact that she wasn’t as womanly as she appeared. I love San Fran....

I've loved this song ever since I heard it as a child. But Geoff is beyond talented. I always say he is so nimble with his vocals. He has the rare ability to not only HIT the low notes, but sustain them and you can understand the words. Where a lot of basses may hit the same note and it's just a noise. Another thing that amazes me is that Geoff never sounds forced or strained his tones are clear and beautiful. He bounces up and down the octaves like a ping pong ball. Like he opens his mouth and all of these delicious words just fall out perfectly! One thing's for certain, he's a rare gem. Great reaction as always!

But then over time his "voice" grew stronger and learned to handle it like any muscle. So some of the pitches and changes .. he has repeatedly trained his voice to be able to handle those moves.

He tends to start doing subharmonics at a G1 (in fact I think there’s only 2 songs where he’s sang subharmonics at a higher pitch) It’s hard cuz us mere mortals cannot understand how it’s possible to sound like that at the bottom of his voice but that’s just the timbre of his natural voice. Subharmonics sound a bit more electronic or robotic 13:11 this ones a G#1 His lowest chest note is indeed an F#1 which he sings twice in this at “step a *side* and that low slide at the end

15:18 - An added reason that I've heard about "another day older and deeper in debt" and "owing my soul to the company store" is that the miner would come home after his shift and tell the wife he had mined 16 tons, but after the company washed and processed it, there might only be 14 tons of coal and two tons of rock. Meanwhile, the wife had done her best to stay within budget at the company store with the 16 tons of credit, not realizing she only had 14 tons of credit.
