Hi Britt. Love your reaction channel. The China policy used to be 1 child. Because of the Male centric Chinese culture, parents would work to have a male child and would "discard" girl children in a multitude of ways. That has changed. China's population has started to shrink so now the government is working to change the culture and incentivize couples to have 3 children and stop the population shrink. It is failing so far because of the cost of raising children in China and the ingrained attitude of only having 1 child per household. Have a great day!

Chinese american here, you're correct! Just a bit more detail here though, the reason that Male children are preferred is because they carry on the family name in marriage, which is HUGE in all asian cultures. So since there was the 1 child policy, males would be chosen over females, which is why when you see babies that are adopted from China, they tend to be female Chinese babies. I also have an aunt and uncle who adopted 2 Chinese females, since they had trouble conceiving their own.

Someone can correct me but when the rule changed im pretty sure the rule was the girl had to be born first and you still couldnt have more than one girl born in the family, government kinda stopped the discarding of female Chinese but they still push to have more males... it could just be a regional thing but when i lived in Chinatown back in the mid 00s that's how it was explained to me by a couple of my friends from Hong Kong, it recently became more of an adopt a daughter policy though just that its more lenient than before

In China having a son is their form of social security. To run their farm or whatever job supports the family when the couple gets old. Since to them having a son is so important and they are limited to how many children they have, they give up daughters to an orphanage and try again for a boy. I have one sister that adopted 2 girls in China and my other sister adopted one girl in China. The only boys at the orphanage were either albino or had some birth defect that made the birth parents decide to leave them at an orphanage.

They don't just put girls in orphanages; they usually abort females as soon as the parents can determine the sex of the fetus. The male to female ratio is very serious problem for China. In the next one to two generations it will lead to a massive reversal in their population and potential massive social upheaval.

3:45 It was the "one child policy" in China (nowadays it's not the case anymore). A side effect of people only being allowed one child is that they would kill baby girls because a girl wouldn't be able to help as much in physical jobs and other aspects ( marriage, family name ... ) Yeah, pretty fucked up if you ask me.

The one child policy in China doesn't exist anymore but it wasn't that long ago that it ended. To keep the family lineage alive, most households preferred to have a boy or you'd have to pay extra fees to have more than 1 child. There's a Chinese female comedian Jiaoyang Summers who talks about how she was literally a "dumpster baby" and her mom had to convince her father to keep her. To this day there's an extreme disproportionate amount of young males vs females and it's making it hard for men to find wives unless they are either really really good looking or wealthy. Basic supply and demand.

When there isn’t woman for males it ussually leads to aggression and violence. It’s very likely why China has started to expands its influence into other countries and have become way more aggressive militarily. You have to focus that aggression outwardly before it is focused internally towards the government or other issues that causes social unrest which will be blamed on the government. Which the CCP will never allow to happen. They always redirect blame onto others

The one child policy is no longer in effect. I think it was around 20115 or so when it changed due to a significant drop in the population. In order to create a surge again, families are incentivized to have more children with monthly stipends until age 3, extended maternity leave, etc.. Another problem is that because so many females were removed during that time, there aren't enough to meet the over abundance of males around in China today. Even if a man wanted to find a wife, he may be hard pressed to find one within the Chinese borders... They are kind of screwed right now. I think I just saw a recent article where the government has raised the monthly stipend to incentivize even more cause the past efforts aren't moving people to go along with the plan..

It’s not a thing anymore, but back in the day you got heavily taxed if you had more than one kid in China. Like taxed to the point where regular people couldn’t afford it. That’s why many families only wanted boys since the sons are the ones to carry on the family name and legacy. Yeah they stopped that like 20 years ago I think or sometime fairly recently.

The end of China's one-child policy was announced in late 2015, and it formally ended in 2016. Beginning in 2016, the Chinese government allowed all families to have two children, and in 2021 all married couples were permitted to have as many as three children. When there was a one-child policy, it was wery common for parents to just drop of their baby girl at some shelter or wherever it was possible to do so. Parents wanted boys, because they think boys have a higher chance of beeing succesful and providing for the family in the future - crazy but true. Thankfully things have changed. I live in the Faroe Islands, and have daughters of 3 and 6 years old, and can´t imagine, having to take these drastic steps to give up your daughters, just because of the pressure and prestige in a society as the Chinese was before.

I won't claim to know the full ins and outs of the China's "One Child" policy, but my understanding is every family was limited to one child. Due to numerous traditions (succession, inheritance, family name etc) in their society it was largely prefered to have a boy actually causing many families to kill their girls until they get a boy. It's only within the last decade that that policy has been recinded, and from what I've heard (and as you can imagine) China has a very skewed male population

During the 90's China had a "one child" policy where couples could only have one kid. About the China joke. They had a one child policy per family. One of the problems is that sons are favored in that culture because a new wife becomes part of the husbands household and they care the parents into old age. If you have a daughter, no one takes care of you in old age. So there were issues of selective sex abortions and girls being abandoned or put up for adoption so people could try for sons. They actually have a slight crisis now because there are so many more men than women so a lot of them can’t get married. Makes you think.

  • @Red_Ring_Of_Death

Mao instituted a “One child policy”. Because boys are supposed to take care of their parents in their old age, a son is preferred. Not long ago it became known outside of China that the country was short of females of child bearing age by about 10-15 million. Plus women with decent careers were often not interested in getting married or not until they were over 30. The loneliest are men in rural communities. Few want to marry a farmer there. So many of them seek brides from even poorer countries. In response to the dilemma the government decided people could have two kids. It seems few were interested. I heard they just recently raised it to three. Under the one child policy abortions were forced on women. And not nicely. Damage was often done.

It;s sad (lol) but what can you do and all that with only being to the hospital for 2 hours in the last 63 years.I hope your life is equally "sad"...er, lol

Still true on the nuber of children a chinese family can have. Since males babies are considered "more valuable", female babies are aborted, or subjected to infanticide. Then the family can try to produce a male baby again.

China lifted the one child policy a few years ago. If you lived in the city, you were allowed one child. If you lived in the countryside, you were potentially allowed two children. In the countryside, if the first child was a girl you could have a second child. In the countryside, if the first child was a boy, you can only have one child in the countryside. Chinese culture favors the boy. The boy inherits property and takes care of the family when they are old. A daughter is worth a dowry but becomes a part of the husband's family. If you have a girl, it's a net loss. That's why there were tons of stories in the 80's and 90's of newborn girls being drown in sewer pipes and such. They didn't have the technology we have now. They were like 1950s tech in the 80's. A Chinese person didn't know if the child would be a boy or girl until it came out. If the child was a girl, there was a much higher % chance they end up in a drainpipe or raised to almost a year and sold for organs. Think of all the Chinese children that you see adopted in the US. They are almost all girls. Thier parents abandoned them. If a Boy makes it to an orphanage, he'll get scooped up from orphanage very fast. Culture wise, he has worth and future value, a girl doesn't. That is starting to change. The one child policy was removed because there are too many old people and not enough young people to support the retirement system (similar to the US, but China is even deeper in the hole.) They boy to girl ratio is so horrible. There are Chinese trips to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and other places just to find women for marriage,

China had a 2 child policy and women would use ultra sound to see if it was a boy or girl. Because boys were expected to care for his parents in old age, many times they would abort girls. They lifted the 2 child policy but people are not having many children. It's still less than 2 per couple.

there is a 1 child per couple policy and the Chinese prefer men who would make money for the family and they would either kill a girl baby or if possible take and drop off the baby at a monastery or try to hide the fact they had a girl in hopes of not getting caught

China had a one child policy but it no longer does. In Chinese culture generally it is the male children responsible for taking care of the elderly parents so families with daughters would see their daughter care for her husbands elderly parents and not them, thus boys were preferred over girls. The issue now being a disproportionate number of men as a result.

China had a one-child policy for decades and they're lacking women and men are having trouble finding partners these up on it but it's going to take decades to catch up. During the one-child policy they would get rid of the girls that they don't bring money to the family they can't work is hard you know their child labor in China a little boy was just more valuable

China will eventually have to go back to a one child policy but only allow women. China right now has a problem with too many men with nothing to do so they encourage them to join the military which is why the Chinese have been getting a bit more aggression over the last year.

About the china 1 child policy. The CCP mandated how many kids people could have and it was the culture that made boys preferred. From what I understood families are situated around the young taking care of the old after having their education heavily invested in. If you have a girl that "young" will go off to another family leaving you with nobody to take care of you and others (Because again, 1 child policy). So better to have a boy. I am trying to explain fairly but I'm not making an excuse for it. Just laying out what I heard about the why and how come. Hammer solution meets a populace with culture formed by horrific poverty and problems arose. The culture of poverty and still present poverty is the root cause.

China did do away with the one child rule, but it was never gender specific, BUT males are charged with the care of their elderly parents, as they dont seem to have social security, ironicly as they are a "socialist" society. that meant that families were trying to have boys and the fine for having a second kid was enormous (100's of thousands of dollars). like all things man made there were unanticipated side effects, a giant generation of male heavy population, who were the very definition of spoiled princes, and no women to marry. it is so bad that people are selling female corpses to be posthumously married to the males who die, to be their partner in the afterlife.

  • @phillipscott7049
    @phillipscott7049 Жыл бұрын

It was a one child policy which reportedly meant a lot of girls aborted, murdered or sold into slavery. In rural areas some estimates have male population over 90 percent so when the one child policy generation hit old age it will make supporting our retiring boomers look like nothing. There are estimates of up to 90 percent drop in population and serious inheritance issues as this generation ages. There are reports of villages buying slaves for men with no partner prospects to use. How much is true is unknown as China is very media controlling and victim to western propaganda but there is a lot of clearly fabricated propaganda of rural Chinese women supposedly working hard but happy so you have to wonder why they felt need.

There was a One Child Policy in China years ago, yes. It's not there anymore and I'm not sure I disagree with it. You've any idea how unstable and impoverished China would be if it had 2+ billion in China there now? The amount of public disatisfaction would leave it MORE prey than it already is to foreign interference and regime changes. It also was NOT gender specific, though I'm sure it probably did happen sometime somewhere, where the parents abided by it and they didn't want a daughter. But there are actually many millions of unreported women during that period. So Andrew's joke here doesn't really reflect reality, tho it does reference the One Child Policy so it's not tooootally fabricated....I guess. I can also go into more reasons China implemented it, like the IMF's pressure to, but I'll stop there. Try not to take too serious what these Westerners say about China. Overall a hilarious set tho.

in muslim countries women do not have the same rights as western women - i have a friend that is from Indonesia - there it takes the testimony of 3 women over a single man's testimony - in inheritance - males (brothers) get the first right to the inheritance and the woman is entitled to 50% of her brothers inheritance - ex : if the brother gets the first half, she gets the latter half which if there are sisters, must be divided equally between the sisters - if there are brothers the sister could end up with nothing. so the "feminists" here should take their complaints outside of western democracy and try this in muslim countries or any other nation where women do not have as much rights as they do here. good luck on that one

Point is women in the us / developed countries have it relatively good. Even without considering the middle east, you can go to any developing country in LatAm, Africa or Asia (which is a vast majority of the world population) and see how good women in the west have it. In certain parts of my home country, little girls still dont get to go to school and grow up doing household chores till they get married off. Not to say things cant get better here in the west but statistically speaking, women have it worse outside America.
