Yep, ... which is why the video Thumbnail confused me SO much. 50 years what?! I sadly suppose from a 2024-hyper-current-focus, in a stretch, you COULD sorta say that, BUT for a Gen X viewer that's the difference between a song from when I was 4 to a song from when I was 8. For a music enthusiast, that's a range when MOST of the DISCO era happened from 1974 to that later point of going #1 in early autumn 78. For someone who lived through it, music had evolved so much in those 4 1/2 years. At the same time, the thumbnail worked and got me to watch, so there's that.

I live in Richmond, where the band was formed. I have never met any of the current members, but my brother's mother-in-law is friends with J.P. Pennington's sister. We attended one of their concerts with J.P.'s sister. I was a restaurant one night, and Exile's original drummer, Ronnie "Mac" Davenport was in there, so I briefly said hi to him.

Yep, and I guess you classify Exile as a general American music band (all over the place). This is definitely a rock song but they made their career as a Country band. Saw them in the 90s when I was working in radio. A #1 and the 5th biggest song of 1978 in a year dominated by the Bee Gees.

It's fascinating to watch your reaction to this because this at least in my memory was kind of a one-hit wonder but it was during my first girlfriend when I was in 9th grade and she was in 10th grade and we spinned a lot of vinyl but she was always just on fire about this song. It really turned her on. And so I definitely have nostalgic memories about it and it was amazing to see your first reaction to it all these decades later.

A lot of people only know Exile for this one song. You'd never know it but they are actually a country band from here in Kentucky. I was lucky enough to work as the photographer for their 2023 4th of July show and people were blown away thinking that they were more of this pop/disco genre. They still got it, by the way, but the original lead singer sadly passed just a few years after this song was recorded.

This, Baby Come back, the Bee Gees, and others, were the beginnings of the Disco era. Except for Blues and Jazz music began a long slide down in the late 80's, and it's never recovered. It's also the time I quit my music career as a drummer after twenty years.

This, Player, Bee Gees, and Exile were the PEAK of the Disco era. Disco began in late 1973, hit the music charts in 1974, and the New York media considered it a dead cultural FAD by early 1977, BUT THEN the Saturday Night Fever sent DISCO into HYPER-Popularity and overexposure. No SNF movie and the LATE 70s would have been vastly different. Considering this was a September/October 1978 #1, and DIsco DIED in July/August 1979 it's REALLY near the END of the disco era. But the overall spirit of your answer is certainly a cultural expression that matches the opinion of many of us. Peace Out, and have a great weekend.

Britt, try the band band Bread(Best of Bread Album). In the "70's", it was the album we put on at the end of the party, when people were "pairing up", and curling up on something warm & soft.(try "Make it with you, or Everything I own, or It don't matter to me, or Baby Im-a want you), either will do the trick. ;)

I was a horn-dawg at 6, apparently. And didn't even know it. But I loved this song as a 6 year old. Never stopped. The only songs that inspired my kiddie mind in ANY way like this one: Seals&Crofts Summer Breeze, McCartney's Let 'Em In, Elton's Don't Go Breakin My Heart, & several of the hit songs by Chic. I still got a lot of great music I remember loving in those young, young years, but those ones always struck the child's mind the hardest.

This brings back great memories. Walking/and dancing in a ballroom/ with the disco ball over head. I met my hubby in a place like that. Hard to believe all men had hair that long......Women ratted their hair/and wore white lipstick. Excellent song, it was always on the jukebox in these cool ballroom/disco's. Thank you..I so enjoy your personality.

OMG! This song is amazing--but this video and your reaction had me howling. "he bent down and got his eagle on". I fell out of my chair. The hair flip, the white coat, the arms swinging around, the blue unitard, and the the voice that you never expected to come out of that man....such a classic in so many ways. Enjoy the day.

When my folks heard it they said ‘what does he mean kiss you all over, that’s silly’ and I just thought they were old fashioned and didn’t understand my generation. I was about 16 when it came out and I still love this song, never saw the video until later but I loved dancing to this with my lover at the disco and we had two babies so it worked on us. Today I play it to recapture that beautiful feeling of first love.

Parents had a *fit* when this hit the air waves. They considered the lyrics wildly inappropriate at the time.😂 Believe it or not they're known as a country band now. Their genres are listed as R&B/Soul and Country.

I used to drive for a food service company back when this was out and I remember one of the restaurants on my route was a strip club and this song along with Nick Gilder's "Hot Child In the City" was always on when the girls were dancing. So you should do that one next Britt for all those hard working girls out there.😉

I was a Junior in HS when this song came out. This song was the theme song and responsible for more than a couple of teen pregnancies.

I think Steve Miller said it best. I am paraphrasing here. He said “We played that game of getting a string of hits. Alot of the success of pop records hinged on if you could craft and write a song with “5 hooks”.
