This song was written based on a real-life tragic event : a cable car accident in China, 1999, which claimed the life of 14 tourists. In the cable car there was also a couple with their small child. When the cable car fell, they held the child in the air with their lasts efforts and hope that it would break the impact force for the child. The child indeed survived. The parents didn`t. Han Hong, chinese singer and songwriter, struck by the tragedy, she adopted the child. She also wrote "Daybreak" to commemorate the parents` sacrifice and hope for their child`s life. She wrote it as if from the child`s perspective. Dimash first sang "Daybreak" during "The Singer" competition. Han Hong gave him her blessing. He performed it beautifully, even though he was sick and had lost his voice. Later that year, 2017, back home in Kazakhstan after the competition, in his first huge solo concert (called 'Bastau') he performed "Daybreak" once more, while in good health. This was the result. The high register sections he included in his performance of this are meant to express the despair of the child. This was the song and performance that, for me, turned Dimash from an extremely interesting singer, into The singer that I appreciate the most. This is the one performance you needed the back story and closed captions on. This song is incredibly sad and based on a true tragic story about a cable car accident in China that killed 13 people. It was written by Han Hong and it’s from a very young boys perspective. He was trapped in the rubble with his parents and they lifted him up to safety right before they died. The songwriter went on to adopt the boy and wrote this song. It’s my favorite performance of his.

You really need to have captions on when they are available. Yes you don’t even need them to know what he’s saying because of how he performs & how expressive it is. But the story behind this one is heart wrenching. He performed this before on the Singer when he was super sick. He almost lost it emotionally at the end.

A Chinese singer/songwriter Han Hong wrote this song. In 1999 A cable car accident took the lives of 14 passengers except a couple held their son up to break his fall and he was the only survivor. Han Hong heard of the tragedy and adopted the boy. Dimash performed this song during the 2017 Singer competition but he had lost his voice the night before, went to the hospital, got 5 injections in the throat to help with the swelling, and performed. I feel like this version is a reattack of the song, of how he wanted to sing it. I mean the Singer version is still good, but this one was more powerful of a performance. Han Hong actually called Dimash during the Singer competition to talk to him to express how pleased she was that he chose her song to sing. They did meet on episode 14 of the Singer 2017. He's born May 24, 1994, so as of February 2023 he's 28. This was the Bastau concert in 2017, July I think so he would have been 23. His first big arena concert 40,000 people.

It is a sad song, a cry from a child for his lost parents, but he makes it beautiful as well.

It's nice to see how his fellow competitors were concerned about him.

That security guard wasn't the only one, there's a video clip somewhere and it shows every security guard turned around watching him in shock! I think he was 23 here, his first concert in Kazakhstan after his return from China. Bastau meaning Beginning.

The true story is heart wrenching, the woman who wrote it called him before he went on to encourage him, the audience and, his competitors cried when he sang it.

Hi Britt, I always enjoy your reactions to Dimash performances, but' it is a shame that you didn't know the true back story of the tragic incident that inspired it----because you miss out on about half of the emotional impact of the song. It's not your fault, of course, but that of whoever posted this video to youtube without an explanation! You might want to consider reacting to Dimash's original performance of this song in front of a Chinese audience who was well aware of the details. It can be found on Gloria Wu's channel, and Gloria was sensitive enough to provide those details in the introduction.

Dimash has had some great performances in his life but I believe this is probably the best. I hope someone told you to read the background story for this song. Of course you would have been crying your eyes out if you had known it before hand.

Britt, in answer to your questions: Dimash is 28, he will be 29 in May. Really, his career singing on stage began when he was 5. When he was 6 he won a national piano contest. He began winning prestigious national singing competitions when he was 16. He won his first international singing competition, Slavic Bazaar, when he was 21. He went to China's "I am Singer" TV competition for professionals when he was 22. He had just turned 23 before his Bastau solo concert, where this performance of "Daybreak" took place in a sold-out arena of 30,000 fans.

He flew into California a couple fo days ago. Most likely moving here for the year as he is pursuing a degree in film directing in NY. That will be a 4th degree for him and this one will be from the N.Y. School of Film Directing and Arts. He will turn 29 May 24th.

Amazing this was in 2017, even back then his concerts were an experience. Let me recommend another from this concert, Daidai. It's a Kazal folk song about a political prisoner that is told his wife left him. Dimash has done this song since he was very young and at this concert, he went full in Kazak.

He actually lost a lot of weight in the last weeks leading up to the concert. I guess nerves because it was his first massive solo. Even his belt is too long.

I've seen 50 or more of his videos and this one has remained in the top 3 since the first month of discovering him years ago. Like others have said, there is a heartbreaking backstory to this song that elevates it even more.

Everyone died except this child because of the efforts of the parents. This happened in China.
