This G5 To A5 was Roger, but Freddie and Roger mostly sang high notes together for harmony. BTW is exactly the same notes that Freddie does on Under Pressure going from G5 to A5, you can hear how different their voices sound on those notes.

I think this is every bit as astonishing a first album as Zeppelin I. It’s so ambitious and technically proficient. It’s not quite prog, it’s like half opera, half drag show after party. The dynamics and ideas just come out of nowhere. Zeppelin had the the blues as a strong template. I confess I have no idea what led these lads to create this. It’s like Zeppelin that didn’t exist yet, with ELO that also didn’t exist.

I vividly remember the first time I heard the opening track. It was played on a British TV show called "The Old Grey Whistle Test". It was played with an accompanying animation of a train running down the tracks. I was blown away. I went out and bought the single the next day. Never heard of them before that moment. The album wasn't even out yet. Brian May's guitar was so unique even on that first song.

considering this being Queen’s first Album it was an epic opener for their career, once you have done Queen, you must follow on to Queen 11 and then Shear Heart Attack all this and they haven’t even spawned Bohemian Rhapsody at this point in time. YaY 🥰 This reminds me so much of how I used to experience new music: (Put on the headphones so I can hear every detail) I was a 9 year old kid when I heard this album and I LOVED it. Fell instantly in love with this band. I used to sing all the high parts too but I can't do it anymore 😖🧓 I got Queen 2 for Christmas a couple years later and that is definitely one of their best albums 🔥 all the early Queen stuff was marvelous. But after The Game, they kinda lost that magic and became just another band on the radio. A Day at the Races is also one of my favorites. Exquisite from beginning to end. Thanks for this Verdy I really needed this diversion cause I am still grieving from the devastating tragic loss of Jeff Beck. p.s. - on My Fairy King, that insanely super high note is the drummer Roger Taylor he could wail like a pissed off woman haha 🤪🧐🌹🤯

When I think of inaugural albums to introduce you to what might be in store from them in the future I think you could see their ambitious nature right from the start. Intricate song structure with Freddie’s theatrical tendencies make for magic. And I just love Brian Mays tone with his guitar. This band had all the main ingredients for a very fruitful and successful career. You know i would have loved to have seen Freddie grow old and singing some of the American Standards. He could have rivalled the likes of Bing Crosby or Frank Sinatra. A real Crooner.

Queen are one of those bands that constantly reinvented themselves. They moved from one sound to another every few years, and always introduced newer aspects to their current sound. Freddie came out in 1975, which led into the best Queen era for me, the mid to late 70's. You could tell Freddie was just happier in his own skin, and more playful. It was also the end of the era where Freddie played piano in the studio. As good as he was, he was self conscious of his own ability, and hired a session pianist to play pretty much from around 1980 onwards.

  • @deandoesstuff3371

Freddie still played piano in the majority of their songs from 1980 onwards...It was mostly during live concerts where they had Spike Edney play some of the piano parts so Freddie had more freedom to walk around on stage.

Stuck around for the whole album and since we were too shy to ask the person in the shop what it was they were playing, rushed to a record store and started combing the new releases for something that looked like what we heard. Fortunately that shop started playing it as we left and we were hooked. Imagine hearing this when it was truly like nothing else... which it remains today. Great choice! Thanks.

Freddie could sing higher notes then Roger. The notes in my Fairy King is a G5 going up to an A5. That is exactly the same notes Freddie does in Under Pressure. Their voices just sound very different on these high notes. Freddie's high notes often don't sound that high, because he had more weight on his voice.

I still remember going out and buying this album in '73. I heard Queen play Keep Yourself Alive on the radio just prior to this and it really impressed me. Not disappointed by the rest of the album either. Strangely, I did not buy any more of their albums after this. I had a thing at that time for not wanting to follow bands that were successful! The drummer, Roger Taylor, sings the high notes and backed Freddie a lot of the time. Really fitting that Brian May is now a Knight of the Realm.

This is a fucking masterpiece my friends. Queen and Queen II are a fantastic start of Queen in the world music. Later, they was and are the best music band of the last Century.

"Keep Yourself Alive" was Queen's first single. Song was written by Brian May "Doing Alright" - Written by Brian May, and originally recorded by Brian's original band Smile, which included Roger Taylor on drums and Tim Staffell on bass and vocals. Was released as a single by Smile back in 1969. btw - Tim Staffell later became the head set designer for the children's show Thomas the Tank Engine "Great King Rat" - A Freddie Mercury Song, he wrote for his previous band Ibex. "My Fairy King" - Another Freddie Mercury song, loosely based on the fantasy world Freddie and his younger sister created when they were children. Oh, and the line "Mother Mercury, look what they've done to me". Allegedly, "Mother Mercury" is what Freddie and his sister called their mother, and it was from that reference he took the stage name Freddie Mercury Amazing debut album. Regarding the high notes that is Roger Taylor, singing falsetto to hit the highest notes. If you like to hear more of John Deacon playing bass, check out side 2, especially the track "Liar" in which John has a bass solo.

I was blessed with having an older brother who collected many hard rock albums in the early 1970's. There probably wasn't a rock album he didnt have (except perhaps KISS and Van Halen albums). Queen 1 was the first 70's rock album where I enjoyed in its entirety. Much like the 60's Beatles "Abbey Road". Or Pink Floyd's prog rock DSoM which came out the same year as Queen's. Its very gratifying to see that 50 years later, young people such as Verdy enjoy listening to Queen, and many other hard rockers from the 70's. IMO Queen 1 was one of the best ever British debut rock albums (yes, better than Zeppelin's, as I've never been a fan of self-pity Blues rock). Whereas Boston's 1st album was the best American debut rock album. BTW If I'm not mistaken, it was guitarist Brian May who played the piano parts in "Doing Alright", in addition to the guitars.

You know Queen just came out the gate, being Queen. The only identity crisis they had was in the 80's mids when Freddy was just out of his mind, but they came back again in style.

Those bells were either a cowbell or a set of A-go-go bells. They are like cow bells,. made of the same metal but, they are shaped as very narrow cones and there's two of them, one slightly smaller than the other, giving them two pitches and they are both mounted on a U-shaped piece of metal that you hold with one hand and play the bells alternately as desired with a drum stick in the other hand. It's too bad you're not nearby! I could show you so MANY incredible albums!! I was just thinking of when I met my future ex-fiance for the second time and we started talking about music and, being from India, she'd never heard of most of the stuff I was telling her about and she was desperate to take notes of the records I was telling er about so, she had me come over to her place for pizza while she took copious notes on the stuff I was telling her about! We did that at least once more the following week and about 2 weeks later, we became boyfriend/girlfriend! The first 3 Queen albums are REALLY hot!! By the 4th. they were starting to get a tad commercial. Still great, but a touch commercial.

_NEVER_ get comfortable listening to a Queen song, thinking you know where it's going. "News of the World" is their best album, IMO. Btw, those really high notes, were done by Roger Taylor, the drummer. He could've been lead singer in any other band.

This album is heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix & Led Zeppelin as well as the Blues, so sounds very different to all their future albums. Queen II is close but you are beginning to hear more of the 'Queen' signature sound. The third album Sheer Heart Attack is where it all truly clicks! Hope you do the whole Queen album journey it is an absolute ride that you will not regret. There are no bad Queen albums!!!

Great album I was 11 when this was released. my Dad had a copy and I used to sneak it onto the stereo and revel in it, it was a big part of my formative years. Do yourself a favour and try to listen to albums from this period on vinyl and a decent system. the digitisation often takes so much from the original. this is one of those albums that has been gutted to get it onto a digital file.

Dr. Brian May: (recently SIR Brian May) Lead guitar/back up vocals/piano sometimes. Dr of Astrophysics. Studied reflected light from interplanetary dust and the velocity of dust in the plane of the Solar System. Has worked with NASA. Made his guitar, with his father when he was around 17. It's called "The Red Special" Still plays it to this day at 74. He can make that guitar do some really amazing things! Roger Taylor: Drums/back up vocals. Has a BS in biology. Epic high note vocalist Both Brian and Roger have solo albums and could have fronted their own bands for their whole career. Having Freddie, Brian and Roger in one band? EPIC! They each do have solo albums but always Queen is their #1. Even today. Freddie had a couple of solo albums as well. John Deacon: Bass guitar. Degree in Electronics. Inverter of the Deacy amp (which Brian uses to this day) Sadly John had a bit of a breakdown after Freddie's death and only performed with the rest of the band a 3 times after. He is only involved in the financial side through his attorney. He's been pretty much a recluse to this day . And of course Freddie Mercury! Degree in graphic art and design. Designed the bands logo. Lead vocal, piano, guitar and of course his favorite thing to play is the audience. One of (if not THE) best rock front men in history! The first song on this album was written before John joined the band. The 2nd song was actually a song that was written by Brian with the band "Smile" The band he and Roger were in prior to Queen. Every member of Queen have written hits.
