To educate you, you never sound stupid. You have a very discerning ear. You pick up a lot of things - sounds, instruments, melodies, harmonies - that people often miss. And the further along on this musical discovery journey the better you get. For instance, connecting some of this music to a theatrical motif is incredibly insightful. I’d not thought of it that way and I’ve been listening to and enjoying this stuff for more than 40 years. Your analysis is always refreshing. Keep doing what you’re doing, keep smiling and don’t underestimate how smart you really are with it.

Regarding your question about keyboards: NO, it's all Brian May's guitar, the 'Red Special' he built from scratch together with his father when he was a kid. Since they used all kinds of strange materials it was able to produce all kinds of weird sounds similar to a synthesizer. Queen didn't use keyboards or synthesizers until their 1980 album 'The Game'

@@johngraham5996 Well you got a point here. I was maybe using the term 'keyboard' incorrectly, since I kind of used it as a modern day synonym for 'synthesizers'. What I had in mind were the things that we typically perceive as 'keyboards' since the early 80s. In a way, an electric piano also is a keyboard, yes, but then so is a grand piano.

Queens debut album is amazing but Queen 2 goes to a whole new level, It has a white side and black side and many of the songs run into the next as Queen intended how you listen to them, The musical orchestration and harmonies especially on side black are beyond what any 4 piece band should have been capable of back in 1974

How good was this as a debut album? Utterly phenominal, I knew the first month it was out and we brought it home and put it on, right away you knew they had 'It' and would be huge, just not sure how big they would get. I suggest checking them out with the video from the 1974 tour which was all about this album and stuff from the near future that ended up on their 2nd and 3rd albums. Their performance is phenomenal both heavy and nuanced with Freddy's vocals and Brian May's guitar standing out. They were legends even before they had radio hits, amazing rock band, Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

All of the things that sound like keyboards (except the piano) are actually Brian May's guitar. He literally wrote full orchestrations and played all of the parts with that rich, smooth sound of his guitar.

Awesome reaction! This was an influential album in the metal community. You should see some of these songs live, some of these songs are better live. Check out Queen live at the Rainbow 1974. Liar, live is amazing, it is the actually bass guitar that plays the solo. With Queen it is interesting to follow which member wrote the song, since everyone in the band wrote songs. Freddie Mercury tended to write the theatrical songs. This was a difficult album to record, the band wasn't signed to a label yet, the album was recorded in the middle of the night when there was no studio time booked by other artists. Queen did not use any synths in the 70's all of the sounds are made with Brian May's guitar and the Deacy Amp (build by bass player John Deacon). Queen did vocal harmonies and guitar harmonies. Queen songs take you on journey, it has often been said that one Queen song has more key changes then most other bands will have on a whole album.

This was a super reaction and I really appreciate the detail in which you give your impressions of the songs and music. I, and I am sure we, would really like you to continue your Queen journey and react to Queen II. And if you do, please be aware that there are some songs that don't have clean breaks between them, there are even multiple songs that bleed into each other, so if you do, as you go through the album, please, please don't try to create your own "breaks" in between songs when they really are not there. You could just listen and stop if there is silence after a song, but if you find a new song beginning before the previous song ends, just listen for 20-30 seconds before you pause to give us your impression of the previous song, and then continue by replaying the end of the previous song and listening again how it bleeds into the next song. We would really appreciate it, and I hope this wets your appetite, as the say, for Queen II.

Seven seas of Rhye will be featured on the second album Queen II. You are bang on the money it was a snippet of what is to come... Liar is an incredible track that features the Bass quite heavily and it is that that is taking centre stage of that solo guitar rythym and riff that end by going down bar by bar. Roger was the more Punk rocker of the band. The 1974 release 3rd album is named after his very punk sounding song Sheer Heart attack. The Track itself is not on that album but will appear later in 1977's album Sheer Heart Attack during the UK punk explosion, and appropriately so. Really enjoyed your reaction to the album. I do hope you carry on through their whole catalogue. You have a solid understanding of Queen already, it's very intuitive.

"Seven Seas of Rhye" - Song was incomplete when this album was released. The original intention was for the song to be the outro for Queen I and the intro for Queen II, but that idea was later abandoned. Strangely enough, once the song was completed and released, it became Queen's first hit single.

The amazing thing with The Night Comes Down is that the version on the album was actually a demo. They tried to do a "proper" recording for the album, but felt they couldn't get the feel right, and decided to use this older version. As far as I know, it's the earliest official queen recording available. If you listen carefully, the drums and bass both have a very different sound from the rest of the album. The drum fills are very clearly influenced by Ringo on that track.

Hello again Verdy... yes, now you know why Queen's music was so popular in the day... because of the versatility -- you never knew what to expect from them -- and, of course, the harmonies and the transitions... always a beautiful journey into sounds and emotions.... The "bell" you referred to in the first song was a cowbell... yes, it was even more obvious in "Liar", which is a fan favorite because it highlights all of the members' individual talents on each instrument... the scale going down was the bassist John Deacon... watch the live at the Rainbow 1974 and see all of them in all their glory, it is so awesome... even John sings in that one, which is very rare!! I cannot emphasis enough what a pleasure it is to see people enjoying Queen's music and reacting to it so emphatically... appreciating such genius and continuing his LEGEND to the next generation of Freddie fans... I sincerely thank you... blessings.

But this is already so developed and layered and dynamic as to be like, 2112 level already for Queen. To me it blows away stuff like Bowie and T Rex who I respect and like and totally love, respectively. It’s the most sophisticated and clever of that glam theater rock style in Britain in the early 70s. It certainly rocks about 10x harder so maybe that’s my bias lol.

hi verdy i'm loving your reactions, keep it up and do more Queen albums 👏👏👏 the noise you refered to was brians guitar and not a keyboard, to see how great brian was you have to listen to his song called 'good company' from the 'a night at the opera' album, on that track he recreates an entire jazz band for the last third of the song, you're sure you can hear woodwind and trombone but it's all just brian on his red special, it'll blow you away 👑✊🇬🇧 oh and i love your little "oooh's" when you get a bit that you really like 🤣🤣

In "Liar" the descending guitar part you noticed is actually a bass with a bit of distortion, played by John Deacon.

The high squealing sound at the end of Son and Daughter was guitar feedback. Queen never used a synthesizer until their eighth album, The Game.

If you think Great King Rat is better than March of the Black Queen, I'm afraid I'll have to ask you to come outside and settle this like gentlemen. Saw Queen live on the Works tour and they did a medley of Great King Rat and Liar - amazing !! I'm 57 so you get to throw the first puch ;-)

New to your channel, but just appreciate you listening to albums not just songs. Your curiosity/reactions are great/real and the helpful and well informed comments and sharing of subscribers add a great deal of insight/clues to the music. You have created a nice community and are now already years ahead of others in your musical experience and taste. Enjoy. It's fun to remember when there was this "new" band called Queen and how unusual and talented they were. Hard to imagine the music world existed without them now. You are a musical "old soul." I have some suggestions, that are different and moving. 1. Pavarotti kzread.info/dash/bejne/lYuXmdiSmsrUhNY.html 2.Danish National Symphony Orchestra. kzread.info/dash/bejne/l6KpsaOrdcnXd9I.html Iconic song, best performance ever, and to them create it live! 3. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aIeMvLCYqa-wmZc.html Yes, Rammstein live. The crowd connection the last half is second to none. 4.One fine Canadian. Neil Young Old Man. Simply brilliant and touching. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gamKq6ylg6e1o5M.html or do the entire Harvest Album.... 5. Joni Mitchell, another amazing Canadian. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZJaHydGHfrSWnZs.html I show this one in my classes and it brings some to tears.

When you get on to Queen 11 there is such a contrast of Music, can’t wait for you to hear White Queen and then The fairy Fellers Master stroke blending in to Nevermore 2 songs that should never be played separately, as with Tenement Funster/Flick of the wrist/ lily of the valley on Sheer Heart Attack. It’s going to be an epic ride for you 😊

This style of "theatrical" music was called, "pomp rock'. Another REALLY good band that played that still are a band from a Columbus, Ohio, friends of mine called, Lollipop Factory. We played three shows with them. Check out their first album, "Soon". kzread.info/dash/bejne/k6yEwcuTYcurkqw.html When we first heard them, we thought they sounded exactly like Queen! No, that's a guitar doing that. On at least the first 3 albums there were no keyboards other than piano. Each album stated on the cover that there were no synthesizers used. Nice to see you using headphones! Those buds you've been using are NOT good for your ears! No, that's NOT Freddie, that's the drummer singing, Roger Taylor. They usually give him one song per album. It's rye, like rye bread. It's just a little taste of the last song on the second album.
