This might be the quintessential Canadian band. I can't even put into words what Gord means to us. Coast to coast. You really need to dive deeper into their catalogue. He wrote the soundtrack to our lives, and spent his last year's fighting for indigenous rights and awareness to their causes. He was an example of the best of us. We miss you bud. ♥️🇨🇦

This is a great song, but Jay would probably vibe with "New Orleans Is Sinking" a lot more. It has an absolutely incendiary guitar hook. He might also enjoy "Blow At High Dough." It rocks. My favorites, though, are "Bobcaygeon" "38 Years Old" "Grace, Too" "Scared" "Nautical Disaster" and _especially_ "Wheat Kings." I think they'll grow on you both.

This made me smile, and definitely not tear up a little. I’m glad there are Americans who appreciate not just the gorgeous, strange/unique structure of the lyrics, also Gord’s voice and his intelligent, compassionate mind. Isn’t Phantom Power such a great album listen? I’m a playlist listener usually but most Tragically hip albums I can just put on and not skip, though I may repeat a song before moving along. 😊

There’s no other band that brought the whole country together like The Hip did for their final concert. Sadly the lead singer was losing a battle to brain cancer and the last show on their last tour was broadcasted (without ads) all over Canada. I think the majority of us wept watching that. He was an amazing man..with his philanthropy and focus on indigenous rights. Even if you don’t dig their music all that much you at least appreciate the importance of them/him to Canadians. RIP to that beautiful man, Gord Downie 🇨🇦 If you want to check out more I second the suggestions for “New Orleans is sinking”. I also love “Wheat Kings” (written about a 19yr old who wrongfully went to jail for 23 years) and “Bobcaygen”.

Gord Downey was also an advocate for native Canadians and the trauma and horror of the residential school system that the Canadian Gov't enforced. He was ceremonially accepted as a native for his work for that advocacy, which was what he considered his finest work.

I hope you two look into New Orleans is Sinking, or Locked in the Trunk of a Car for his scream. Definitely worth looking deeper into. Thank you for sharing this with us. I lived near the border in Washington State. We watched that last concert on CBC. It was a once in lifetime experience. This song is great. Something is missing with Ray that he doesn’t love it. The chord progression is gorgeous and a melody that stays with one. Is he tone death, can’t hear melody? He tends to react only to rhythm.

After you've gotten some more Hip in your heads, make sure and check out their farewell concert from a few years ago. When they found out lead singer Gord Downie had terminal brain cancer, they embarked on a several-city tour of Canada as a goodbye. It was an extremely moving concert, their last show broadcast nationwide. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, himself a Hip fan, even attended the concert. This band is a (Canadian) national treasure.

Jay, you need to listen to whole lot more Tragically Hip, they are a rock band and Gord Downie, the lead singer, is a master poet. They are a national treasure here in Canada and it a day of mourning when Downie passed away from cancer five years ago. This song is among their most popular but if you want rock, Little Bones, New Orleans is Sinking, and Blow at High Dough are more line with what you are looking at.

First off, we Canadians love you right back! Love when you do canadian reactions like RUSH and Bryan Adams. 2nd off, this is an amazing song by 'The Hip' as we call them and probably one of their most recognizable songs to the public 3rd off, The Hip can really rock (seen them in concert awhile back and they blew me away). You guys started with one of their slower songs, but they have amazing rock songs that you will really like too. Try listening to LITTLE BONES, or NEW ORLEANS IS SINKING. 4th and finally, I think that once you react to a few more songs from them, you will really love them. They are an acquired taste, like RUSH, so please give them a few more tries to grow on you. Keep smiling🇨🇦👍🎸🙂

The Hip had some harder stuff as well, New Orleans is Sinking, Blow at High Dough, Little Bones, 38 Years Old. those songs would have been great, sad that of all the great songs The Hip has to offer, this is the song they get forced to listen to, I wish people would stop doing this to them, let them hear the bangers and the bigger hits before they are forced into these more thought provoking songs, this was a slow, boring song and not something that would drive them to want to hear more Hip. Bad form whoever is picking these songs for them. Sure its someone favorite song, but you are already a fan, to a new listener this was a disappointing song to try to hook them with, especially with the catalogue of songs they have to offer.

Gord Downie's voice was truly one of a kind! Sadly, he passed in 2017, after which the band went their separate ways after 34 years together. They left their mark on music history, for sure. Now if I had to name a 90s song you are guaranteed to love, it would be "Possum Kingdom" by Toadies. A banger if there ever was one. It's not soft.

When Gord sadly passed away, the Downie family sent my teacher one of Gord's signature hats to turn his wall into a shrine. I love their music and will always honour Gord's legacy. RIP Gord! Bob and I say hi!

Their final performance of this song in Kingston is possibly THE most moving musical moment of my life so far! Thank you for sharing your reactions. My life is immeasurably better for the art these five friends shared with me. The loss of Mr. Gordon Downie left a hole in how I relate to the world. I hope others can find catharsis in their wonderful songs and deeds. Activists, artists, and PEOPLE...

I'm 44, and so growing up in the 90s I can't recall any bands or singers that I was into that either my mom or one of my aunts didn't have on the radio. They would play CDs in the car and whatnot of Elton John and Billy Joel so I never really wasn't to modern music when I was that age. I've always enjoyed the older music. I was 12 years old in 1990... And at the time could not name a single current band that was modern at the time. But I knew a lot of Pink Floyd songs. There was a hip hop pop music channel on the radio that was always on everywhere I went that played crap music so I just didn't really pay attention. Other than harder bands like Nirvana and Pearl jam and whatnot I can't recall any bands from the '90s that I was into. And I wasn't even into those bands until the late 90s.

Toward the end of the 80's, the 5 major record labels paid for their talentless performers (who sang the drivel they churned out through a handful of formulaic songwriting machines) to have exclusivity over the radio airwaves. True artists that refused to compromise and chose relative obscurity/loyal fans/decades long careers over the easy/repetitive/mindless hook went underground, preferring to sign with independent labels run by former/active artists.

I still love the classics, but songwriting has actually gotten better in some ways. Consider: RIDE (I don't know where it comes from), THE SHINS (phantom limb), PEDRO THE LION (bad things to such good people), INTERPOL (the new), DECEMBERISTS (mariner's revenge song), PEDRO THE LION (bad things to such good people), RADIOHEAD (blow out), STEREOLAB (ping pong)... I could go on, and these are not one hit wonders. Sadly, most equate popularity with quality when, post 80s, the opposite is true.

"Ahead by a Century" was the final song they played at the final show in their hometown of Kingston, Ontario. The last concert was broadcast in its entirety across Canada. In 2017, Gord Downie, the lead singer passed away from brain cancer (same cancer that Neil Peart of Rush had).

YES!!! Greetings from Canada! I won't bother to repeat the platitudes others have put up here about how beloved "the Hip" were all across Canada, but it is fact. I will say though, that this is a pretty middle of the road tune for them. A good song, but not expressing how artistic and creative they could be, nor showcasing how hard they could rock and how amazing the lead guitar player was. PLEASE explore a whole bunch more!!!! Especially the 1st 5 albums (1987-1994). My advice for another stab at them to get you into it would be Three Pistols. I think that's a 90's tune Jay would like.

Try one or more of these ones; - New Orleans Is Sinking - Little Bones - Blow at High Dough - Fully Completely - Courage Some of those, and others, would be more "rock". I was in my early 20's in the early 90's when the Hip was big (saw them 3 times live). YES! I'm in the States, and the band I've seen the most times, by a wide margin, is Blue Rodeo. I'd start with 'Til I Am Myself Again, or maybe Diamond Mine. Disappear is another great one, although the studio version is not nearly as good as any of their live versions. I should also add that the Hip's Gord Downie's last public appearance was at a Blue Rodeo show. They close every show with Lost Together, and they usually invite a special guest (typically the opening act) to sing the second verse. Gord came out to deserved adulation, with a piece of paper with the lyrics in hand. He got about a line in and couldn't go any further. Dallas Good of The Sadies stepped in and finished the verse. Sadly, we lost Dallas this year, too.

Thank you for giving The Hip a try. these guys are treasured by Canadian fans, and i personally love them but will be the first to say they are not for everyone! it's funny you mentioned about the words and not "getting it"... watching your reaction made me realize (ok this sounds dumb because i've listened to this song THOUSANDS of times) that "tonight we smoke them out" is in reference to the hornets!! my gosh i can't believe i put this together just now hahaha... i mean lyrics, and especially these ones, can be taken a number of ways but my gosh, it's right there. the rest of it reads and sounds to me like a song of love and companionship and admiration, about not wanting to fall behind who you're beside as you're walking down the road of life. "you are ahead by a century.... and dissapointing you's getting me down" is a heartbreaking line delivered with the perfect tone

Only Gord’s death from cancer in 2017 ended their almost 30 year run. Their final concert was broadcast to the entire country, and most of us watched. I appreciate your reaction, I think Canadians are always happy when The Hip are on offer. RIP Gord, forever remembered, in gratitude.

If you want a few of their songs with a more rocking vibe, I'd recommend "Blow At High Dough", "Little Bones", or "Trapped In The Trunk Of A Car". The Hip were arguably the most important band to ever exist in Canada. There were other artists who were more successful internationally but Gord and the boys were ours. When they played their last show after Gord Downie was diagnosed with brain cancer we literally shut the entire country down and broadcast the show coast to coast uninterrupted. And when he died the entire nation mourned as if he was royalty (which to us he was).

I am so glad you have finally found the Hip! They actually started out in 1984 in Kingston, Ontario. They released 13 albums over the course of their career and their lead singer Gord Downie was one of the most unique singer/songwriters to walk the earth. Sadly Gord left us in October of 2017 after battling brain cancer. There are so many songs you need to listen to. You can hear and feel Gord’s spirit in every single one of them. I myself would highly recommend your next song be Wheat Kings from the album Fully Completely. The song is about a man named David Milgaard who was wrongfully convicted of the murder of a young nurse at just 17 years old. He would spend the next 23 years fighting to prove his innocence. It’s a heavy song but it is an important one. ✌🏼

So many great comments. Gord Downie’s passing in 2017 was a tragic loss for music and Canada. The bands earlier records were very blues influenced and had some true rockers. New Orleans is Sinking, Blow at High Dough, Cordelia and Little Bones are from the first couple of records. Fifty Mission Cap is not only a slapper, but tells a uniquely Canadian story (as so many of their songs did). One of my personal faves is Fireworks. It’s a rock number. Wheat Kings and Bobcaygeon are massive hits on the softer side, but if you want a gut punch of emotion, listen to Fiddler’s Green from Road Apples. It’s a heartbreaking lament for the loss of a child.

Jewel - "Who Will Save Your Soul" or "Down So Long" or "Little Sister" (story song) Marcy Playground - "Sex and Candy" Billy Ray Cyrus - "Achy Breaky Heart" Garth Brooks - "Friends in Low Places" or "Papa Loved Mama" (story song) or "Shameless" or "The Thunder Rolls" (story song) Semisonic - "Closing Time" There were some great songs in the 90's. :)

It's hard to explain just how much this band means to Canadians. They were around for decades and all of us have personal memories tied to their songs. Gord Downie was a poet and a champion for the indigenous people. Their songs contained references to Canadian history including the darker side. Wheat Kings tells the story of an indigenous man who was wrongly convicted of murder as a teen. He spent 20yrs in prison before he was exonerated with DNA evidence. It's hard to place the Hip into a genre. Their sound is sometimes rock, sometimes folk, sometimes alternative. Some good rock songs are New Orleans is Sinking, Blow at High Dough, and Locked in the Trunk a Car. Gord was diagnosed with brain cancer and had brain surgery in 2016. He was given 18 months to live so after undergoing chemotherapy and surgery the band went on a farewell tour all across the country. Their final show was broadcast on tv with no commercial breaks. Thousands of people in every province gathered in bars, parks and theatres to watch together and say goodbye. It's like the whole country attended a concert together. Gord passed away in 2017. He was a great writer, a great performer., a great person and he will be forever missed. RIP

The Hip, as they are commonly refered to here in Canada, their music is quite varied, I like most all of their music, if I was to introduce someone to their music I'd likely first go with one of their biggest ones, "New Orleans is sinking", then " Little bones". Look for another Canadian band Blue Rodeo, they have 2 lead singers, and depending upon who is singing lead can make the group seem very different, I'll suggest "Bad Timing" and one of my favourites is "What is this love".
