The haunting magic comes at 5:19 when Mama Cass only sings "dreamin" while Mama Michelle sings "California Dreamin" Then Cass sings an extended "On such a winters day" while Michelle sings "California Dreamin" at the same time. It is mind bending yet it is so haunting and flows ethereally.

Michelle Phillips (The slender younger blonde) was married or dating at the time John Phillips (the leader and guitar player). One night John woke her up and wanted to work on a song. He couldn't wait until the morning. That song is California Dreamin' and Michelle got co-writing credit. She says it was the best sleep she has ever missed. The royalties are still flowing in today.

I liked them and they were big when I was in high school. Chynna Phillips is the daughter of Michelle (the blonde) and John (the taller of the two guys and he passed away March 18, 2001). Carnie and Wendy Wilson are the daughters of Brian Wilson of Beach Boys. Denny Doherty (shorter of the two guys) passed January 19, 2007, Mama Cass (Cass Elliot) passed July 29, 1974. Michelle is 77.

These 4 were ABBA's vocal ancestors. My parents' Gen.This fab unison was the best and most colorful vocal band of the '60s era.John was a fantastic vocal arranger,Denny a fine male songbird,Michy a soft soprano with killer looks of a shiny filmstar and Cass a huge singing pipeline breathing out decibells. All shapes and sizes one complimented the other in a magical way.I'm a '70s/'80s brought up teenager but TMATP is in my top 3 most fave bands and got all their discography.Exceptional!

When this song was released, it blew people away because nobody had heard the harmonies arranged quite this way in a pop song before. The real vocal powerhouses of course were Denny Doherty (the lead singer in this song) and Cass Elliott, also known as Mama Cass. She also had a solo career before she passed away in, I think, 1974. Her voice, when she let go, was *amazing*. Other songs worth listening to by them include "Monday Monday", "I Saw Her Again" and "Creeque Alley" which is more or less the story of how the band got together.

I introduced my kids to the Mama's and Papa's when they were newborns singing Dream a Little Dream of Me, a solo by Cass, when I rocked them to sleep. Great memories whenever I hear them singing. Here's some trivia. The blonde and the guy with the guitar (Michelle & John Phillips) are the parents of Chyna Phillips, whose band Wilson Phillips is the one that plays in the wedding scene on the movie "Bridesmaids." John was also the father of 2 actresses, McKenzie Phillips and Bijou Phillips. Both were in shows & movies from long before you were born. Haha. Just gives perspective on how old this is.

It's so hard to explain to young people how iconic these songs are. young folks are really picking up on the talent, no special effects or computers, real instruments no auto tune and recognizing that this is pure talent and writing, how different it is from today. I believe this is a bigger flute you are hearing that plays lower than a regular flute, called an alto flute. Only one member is alive today, Michelle Phillips, the blond. when computers infiltrated over the decades, many musicians lost their jobs as studio musicians...a really f-ing SAD thing.

If you want to hear of one the most beautiful, iconic voices of all time, listen to Karen Carpenter of the Carpenters, whom I believe had 17 top 20 hits in the 1970s/1980s. She is documented by computer to have perfect pitch, soulful, low register voice that still mesmerizes people to this day. She tragically died at the age of 32 due to cardiac complications of anorexia nervosa. Start with either "Close to You" (she plays the drums), "Rainy Days and Mondays", or "Superstar". It's and alto (lower tone, larger) flute. The only one still alive is Michelle Phillips. Cass Elliot (Moma Cass) died at 32 years old in 1974 of a heart attack. Denny Doherty died at 66 in 2007 (he is the shorter male vocalist). John Phillips died at 65 in 2001. As the taller vocalist John also played guitar and was the mastermind of the group; he put the group together and as Moma Cass put it "wrote all of their songs and most of the songs they stole". In my opinion Mama Cass and Denny Doherty were the most talented in the group (as vocalists), they could sing anything!

Flutes were popular with hippies. Listen to accordion on It's A Long Way to The Top by AC/DC

It's a flute BUT it's an Alto flute not a normal one ( it plays in a lower register ) . If you really want to hear a flute you need to check out JETHRO TULL - either " Locomotive Breath " or " The Witches Promise " but pick a live version

Moma Cass Elliott, Denny Doherty and John Phillips all passed. Michelle Phillips is still alive and is on her daughter 's Chynna Phillips You tube channel at times.
