The Mamas & the Papas were a great folk rock group in the 60's. I had their records. They were known for their smooth harmonies. They had lots of great hits such as "Monday, Monday", "Dedicated To The One I Love", "Words Of Love", "Dancing In The Street", "Look Through My Window", "Creeque Alley", "Twelve Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon)", "Safe In My Garden", "I Saw Her Again" etc. Mama Cass Elliot went solo & had a big hit with "Dream A Little Dream Of Me".

The younger blonde singer Michelle Phillips has a daughter Chynna Phillips who is married to Billy Baldwin. Chynna is an actress/singer and part of Wilson/Phillips band famous for the song Hold On which was on the soundtrack of the film Bridesmaids. The 2 Wilson singers Wendy and Carnie are the daughters of The Beach Boys founder. Talk about a musical legacy! John Phillips the lead singer has an actress daughter Macenzie Phillips from the 1970s sitcom with Valerie Bertenelli(ex of Eddie Van Halen ,current host of Kid's Baking Championship of Food Network) of One Day at a Time.

Hi Chase, Yes, this is a classic song from 1965. The harmonies were great, and that was a flute. Monday Monday, is another great song from them. Now for the bonus feature. In 1967, a couple of “kids” trying to get into the music business and get a contract made a demo using this song. The older brother, changed the lyrics and made the song more religious than the original. And I pretend to pray, became, and I begin to pray. Something he would do again later. His younger sister sang the lead vocal. Her older brother played piano and the person whose garage studio they were using to record the song played bass. His name was Joe Osborn. I’m not sure who played drums but it was not the younger sister. Goosebumps yet? The “kids” were Richard and Karen Carpenter. This was 2 years before they became “Carpenters.” Here’s a link, it’s just audio, of course. Joe kzread.info/dash/bejne/oqykr82GnarRhKg.htmlsi=gitDQ0R0yH53NFYr .

This song was an anthem from the 60. The Mama's and the Papa's, took their name from what motorcycle gangs who had girlfriends or wives that rode with them called themselves. This group was very popular in the late 60s, especially in California, and played a small part in exposing California fans to Jimi Hendrix and his band the Experience in the very early days when Hendrix had no place to play because his tour as a opening act for the 60s television singing group the Monkees was canceled due to song choice, level of volume and the way he performed frightened the parents of the young children and young people who paid to see the Monkees. One of the Mama's was the incredible talented Cass Eliot, who was the best talent in the group by a mile. The blond Mama was a very young Michelle Phillips who was also married to one of the Papa's who I will not name because of his personal behavior. Michael and he, were the parents of an actress named McKenzie Phillips who played in a 70s television comedy sitcom called One Day At A Time. I was raised in the late 50s and early 60s and I have loved music my entire life and was blessed to have lived through the time when the greatest music ever recorded was made. You have made tremendous improvements in reacting to music. I really appreciate your love and respect for the older creations that are from a period in history that will never be repeated. Some reactors become actors and lose the true connection with this past treasure by attempting to put every song and artist in a genre. These artists crossed many "genres" creating their music, whether it was only one song or several times on one album. From the mid-60s through the mid-70s, music was a free forum of the artist expressing. There are still talented musicians and artists today, but the music industry requires everyone to record or post on KZread and other media sites to use pitch correction tuned to 440 hertz and auto tune. Both of these software devices take all of the emotion out of the human voice and place every voice directly over the note, which is not humanly possible and makes the voice sound mechanical. I know you will do great and be a big success. Never lose your authenticity and stay true to yourself. There is another great band from the 60s that I know you will love called the Young Rascals. Their lead singer Felix Cavalier has a rich soulful voice. The song that I would like you to react to is called "Groovin."

Like seeing you discover these beautiful songs. BTW Back in the 50/60/70s AM radio was the home of commercial radio. The DJs had set lists of the most popular songs to play hourly, and it was for the masses and appealed to a younger audience and songs were almost always restricted to ~3 min or less songs so they could have more commercials. Hence the shorter song length for these older songs. Record labels would release shorter versions of a song to get them played on the radio and you had to buy the record to hear the longer version. In the late 60s FM radio took off when they started playing rock music, up until then, FM was mainly classical music stations due to its higher fidelity. These stations started to play longer songs and even whole albums and 70's songs were often much longer.

  • @Tarkus7

The song was so short because in the 60's if you wanted to get played on the AM radio it had to be like 3 minutes or under. Many short songs came out of that era.

The big girl is Momma Cass and was known for her wild parties. You were somebody if you got an invite or brought by a friend. She choked to death on a sandwich. Karen Carpenter died of anorexia. They say that if Momma Cass would have shared her sandwich with Karen Carpenter, the world would still have two great singers! Michelle Phillips, the blonde one became an actress later and had a daughter, Wilson Phillips, that had some success with singing in the late 80’s. She was more like a one -hit -wonder. I hated that we lost Momma Cass. Imagine how music would be today if she had lived. It’s really sad. You were thinking of a Recorder that we all played in elementary school. It was a Flute. I loved playing this on my flute. Did you get my text with the link to Pink Floyd?!

Actually the theory that she died because of a ham sandwich is an unreal rumour. Her daughter talked about it with bitterness on this false rumour in an interview. She explained that her mother Cass had a heartattack.Btw Michele's daughter was Chyna Philips,Wilson Phillips was the band she was in with Brian Wilson's daughters. Both Cass and Karen died so young. So tragical.Music missed 2 fantastic singers indeed.

This type of singing is 'call and response.' One singer (or set) sings a line (the call) and another responds with either an echo or an answer. The musical instrument is a flute. What you had was a whistle. With a flute one blows across an opening, with a whistle one blows into an opening and the instrument is designed to route the air across another opening. A whistle is much simpler playing style of flute.

CHASE you have to understand that in the '50s, and '60s songs in order to get RADIO play they had to be no longer than 3 minutes long. If they were, the DJ would fade them out or edit them to be shorter. This was so there was time for commercials and the things that the DJs did on air, that were really a lot of fun, at the time. DJs then were also stars in their own right and were very popular with us teenagers in the '60s.

Chase, you like Karen Carpenter; she covered this song early in their career, but the finished recording did not appear until after her passing. Check it out. The wind instrument solo is a flute, but sounds a bit like a recorder, which may be the other instrument you're talking about. There were quite a few of these choral-sounding vocal groups active in the 60s: the Turtles and The Association were two others. Indeed, what ended up as Carpenters began as the ensemble called Spectrum. Cass Elliot, one of the "Mamas", made some wonderful music as a solo artist, too, notably covering old standards like Dream A Little Dream Of Me and I Can Dream, Can't I (the latter of which was also gloriously recorded by Carpenters).

I can't believe you haven't done them yet. Several more songs of theirs to review. The musical instrument you talked about is a Flute. Sadly, songs of that era were short 2-3 minutes long. That was due to what radio stations wanted to play so people make songs that long. That changed probably in the 1970's. I grew up listening to them.

A nice rabbit hole worth jumping into! It is a short song. But there was a lot to love in this song! Most of their library gives the same vibe. Back in the early days of recorded music...all song needed to "fit" into a short time slot. Station managers wanted more songs aired, to get more listeners, and to leave time for more commercials, where their money came from. Older music, 40s and 50s stuff, ran longer. But almost all of that was heard live. Most stations weren't doing music 24/7. It wasn't until the 70s that songs were "allowed" to be longer for radio. By the 80s that all went out the window! Momma & the Poppa! Great easy-listening group. Numerous hits. When being introduced at an event the band members were called/known/called themselves by their sex "title" for the group name. One of the most favorite, and the greatest voice, was Momma Cass!

When you dive into the music of the 60s and 70s, you might start with PINK FLOYD. Their live performance at Pulse, specifically the song “Comfortably Numb”. I have no doubt you will be blown away.

You'll never know that the Carpenters has also their version of this California Dreamin. She was only 16 yrs old when she sang this.

I consider this their best song, though they have other good ones. This is folk rock. If you want to try some other folk rock artists from the same era, you could listen to "Mr. Tambourine Man" by the Byrds, "Do You Believe in Magic" by the Lovin' Spoonful, or "The Sound of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel. All 3 of these artists also have other good songs.

If you want some more great 60s music, listen to “White Rabbit” by Jefferson Airplane, psychedelic rock at its best.

Hey Chase, another great song. Just wondering if you've ever heard or reacted to "Like A Sunday In Salem" by Gene Cotton. It was maybe 1978, amazing song in my opinion...Have a great day.

Like a lot of brilliant groups they had problems. They had more than their share. They broke up after only 4 years. Long story.
